The Education of the Creative Writing Teacher: A Study of Conceptions of Creative Writing Pedagogy in Higher Education.

This qualitative study responds to ongoing discussions in creative writing studies about the lack of discipline-specific pedagogic training for graduate creative writing students. Since 1994, creative writing scholars have called for graduate programs to offer instruction in creative writing pedagogy in order to correct persistent misconceptions of creative writing as unteachable, prepare graduate students to teach undergraduate courses, and to suggest alternatives to the entrenched pedagogic practice of the traditional writer’s workshop. Currently, 33 U.S. graduate programs offer creative writing pedagogy courses, but these courses have gone virtually unexamined in the literature. Through phenomenographic interviews with seven creative writing pedagogy teachers at six U.S. graduate creative writing programs and an analysis of their course syllabi, this dissertation project investigated how instructors of those few courses offered in creative writing pedagogy prepare future instructors. This study discovered significant variation in creative writing pedagogy course parameters and in creative writing pedagogy teachers’ conceptions of teaching described in terms of five categories of pedagogic identity. This study suggests that creative writing pedagogy courses are unlikely to change conceptions or lead to innovation in pedagogic practice unless they address core conceptions of teachers and teaching and investigate alternative pedagogies. Guiding objectives for creative writing pedagogy courses drawn from all five pedagogic identities are identified. These objectives and the categories of pedagogic identity discovered in the data are intended to provide creative writing and creative writing pedagogy teachers, program administrators, and scholars with tools useful for reflection, evaluation, and planning for the future education of creative writing teachers.PhDEnglish and EducationUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. A fine structural study of divalent cation-mediated epithelial union with connective tissue in human oral mucosa

Following incubation in an isotonic saline solution containing 20 mM EDTA, human oral mucosa may be separated into its epithelial and connective tissue components. Ultrastructural study of the separated tissues reveals that the plane of separation is through the lamina lucida. Hemidesmosomal structure is altered by the separation process: the peripheral density is absent but a fine, generally filamentous material remains associated with the outer membrane leaflet of the hemidesmosome. Desmosome structure is not altered. An intact lamina densa remains attached to the connective tissue fragment. Oral mucosa incubated in EDTA-saline containing calcium, or its return to a divalent cation-supplemented medium after treatment with EDTA, prevents separation. By maintaining the structural integrity of the hemidesmosome, divalent cations appear to play a principal role in uniting oral mucosal epithelium to the lamina propria.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/49659/1/1001330406_ftp.pd

Reversible microsomal binding of hepatic aldolase

Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (-fructose-1,6-bisphosphate -glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate lyase, EC 4.1.2.13) partitions between the microsomes and the cytosol when a rat liver homogenate is fractionated by differential centrifugation. Gel electrophoresis and immunodiffusion indicate that the one isozyme present in the liver of the young adult rat is found in both fractions. The association of the aldolase with membranes is differentially sensitive to a variety of metabolites and inorganic salts. In the absence of cellular salts, 1 mM fructose 1,6-bisphosphate or glucose 1,6-bisphosphate elutes 50% of the enzyme from the microsomes. About 9 mM Pi or citrate is necessary to produce the same effect. With other metabolites or inorganic salts higher concentrations are required. The fraction of total enzyme which partitions with the microsomes when a homogenate is submitted to high speed centrifugation, correlates inversely with the level of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate in the supernatant solution and this concentration is higher when the tissue concentration in the homogenate is greater. The Km for fructose 1,6-bisphosphate of 3 [middle dot] 10-4 for aldolase bound to microsomes is decreased to 6 [middle dot] 10-6 M when the enyme is dissociated from the membranes with salt. These observations appear relevant to the ongoing discussion regarding the physiological relevance of the subcellular localization of glycolytic enzymes.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/24233/1/0000493.pd

The definitive version was published in Experimental and Molecular Pathology 83 (2007): 224-240, doi:10.1016/j.yexmp.2007.03.007.The intracellular dominance of magnesium ion makes clinical assessment difficult despite the critical role of Mg++ in many key functions of cells and enzymes. There is general consensus that serum Mg++ levels are not representative of the growing number of conditions for which magnesium is known to be important. There is no consensus method or sample source for testing for clinical purposes. High intracellular Mg++ in vertebrate embryos results in part from interactions of cations which influence cell membrane transport systems. These are functionally competent from the earliest stages, at least transiently held over from the unfertilized ovum. Kinetic studies with radiotracer cations, osmolar variations, media lacking one or more of the four biological cations, Na+, Mg++, K+, and Ca++, and metabolic poison 0.05 mEq/L NaF, demonstrated: (1) all four cations influence the behavior of the others, and (2) energy is required for uptake and efflux on different time scales, some against gradient. Na+ uptake is energy dependent against an efflux gradient. The rate of K+ loss is equal with or without fluoride, suggesting a lack of an energy requirement at these stages. Ca++ efflux took twice as long in the presence of fluoride, likely due in part to intracellular binding. Mg++ is anomalous in that early teleost vertebrate embryos have an intracellular content exceeding the surrounding sea water, an isolated unaffected yolk compartment, and a clear requirement for energy for both uptake and efflux. The physiological, pathological, and therapeutic roles of magnesium are poorly understood. This will change: (1) when 28Mg is once again generally available at a reasonable cost for both basic research and clinical assessment, and (2) when serum or plasma levels are determined simultaneously with intracellular values, preferably as part of complete four cation profiles. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry, energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy on sublingual mucosal and peripheral blood samples are potential methods of value for coordinated assessments.AEC Grant No. 134

’White’ ’racial’ identity development : a content analysis of semi-structured interviews

    No full text
The purpose of this research was to gain a better understanding of the experience of being 'White' in British Columbia. 'White' 'racial' identity development (WRID) theory proposes that 'White' people may develop a positive 'racial' identity that is non-racist. Research has linked the multicultural counselling competencies of a counsellor to her positive 'racial' identity. The American Counselling Association has made it ethically incumbent upon 'White' counsellors to develop a positive, non-racist 'White' 'racial' identity. However, the relationship between 'racial' identity and psychological health is inconclusive and the use of 'race' as a construct in the social sciences is controversial and confounding. WRID research has occurred exclusively in the United States and has only been concerned with attitudes towards 'Blacks.' A qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews and content analysis were used to explore the nature and existence of WRID in British Columbia. Participants who considered themselves to be 'White' and who have lived or worked in aboriginal communities were recruited. Two computerized programs were used to help in the analysis of the content of the interviews. Participants provided descriptions of "White" culture yet their 'White' 'racial' identities were tenuous. No definitive support was found for the existence of WRID in British Columbia, however support was 'found for parts of theories found in the "racial" identity literature. This information may help counsellors and educators engaged in cross-cultural work.Education, Faculty ofEducational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department ofGraduat
