    Photography and Its Relevance in Pathology

    Pathology is a visual science which holds true of the old adage “seeing is believing.” Photography has become an integral part of this branch of medicine. Its application lies not only in diagnosis and consultation including telepathology, medicolegal documentation and quality assurance but also in learning and scientific purposes. The lower cost and shorter image production time has paved the way for digital imaging. Large archives of such images can be created and stored with an ease of access. Photography techniques in pathology are purely based on observation or experience rather than theory. This article aims to describe the practical aspects of photographic techniques in pathology

    Progressive rise of c fos expression from premalignant to malignant lesions of oral cavity

    Objectives: Oral cancer is a worldwide phenomenon. It is thought to develop in a number of premalignant lesions. Protooncogene c fos is a known transformer of premalignant to malignant lesions. However, its role in oral carcinogenesis is not yet known. Study design: A total of 130 cases were studied comprising of premalignant lesions (n=50), squamous cell carcinoma (n=50) and controls (n=30). c fos expression was studied by immunohistochemistry. Results: Premalignant lesions of oral cavity occurred at a lower age group (mean 39.2 years) compared to squamous cell carcinoma (mean 51.8 years), p <0.001. Mean c fos percentage positivity in squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), premalignant lesions and controls was 44.5±36.9%, 11.4±18.8% and 1.23±2.6% respectively, the differences were highly significant (p<0.001). c fos positivity also increased from mild (10.85±14.23%) to moderate dysplasia (19.64 ±26.05%). Conclusions: The serially increasing c fos expression from normal mucosa to premalignant lesions to SCC and in dysplasias suggests that it could be an early gene to get activated and form transcription factor activator protein ?1(AP-1)

Here we report an unusual and first of its kind, a case of primary mature cystic retroperitoneal teratoma mimicking as adrenal tumor in a 7-month-old female in which the tumor was predominantly composed of neurogenic tissue histologically which is unlike the usual pattern seen in the teratomas

    Study of surface integrity and effect of process parameters in wire electrical discharge turning of Ti-6Al-4V

    Wire electrical discharge turning set-up has been developed by modifying the conventional five axes CNC WEDM machine. The main objective of this setup is to achieve cylindrical forms on hard to cut materials. This work focuses on the study of effect of input process parameters like pulse on-time, pulse off time, gap voltage, spindle rotational speed on output responses like surface roughness, material removal rate and wire wear ratio. A mathematical model of responses has been developed using response surface methodology and the optimal value of process parameters has been obtained by desirability function. Surface morphology studies of the machined surface and the worn-out wire has also been elaborated by FE-SEM images. The results show that with an increase in machining parameters value except pulse-on time, all the desired machining outcome decreases. Surface roughness, material removal rate and wire wear ratio have been found in the range of 1.99 ÎŒm – 1.37 ÎŒm, 7.55 – 13.66 mm3/min and 0.05–0.08, respectively. The formation of thick recast layer over the machined surface has also been discussed. The reduction in wire dimension has been calculated by optical microscopy and its morphology has been discussed by FE-SEM images

    Impact of IRS: Four-years of entomological surveillance of the Indian Visceral Leishmaniases elimination programme

    BACKGROUND In 2005, Bangladesh, India and Nepal agreed to eliminate visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem. The approach to this was through improved case detection and treatment, and controlling transmission by the sand fly vector Phlebotomus argentipes, with indoor residual spraying (IRS) of insecticide. Initially, India applied DDT with stirrup pumps for IRS, however, this did not reduce transmission. After 2015 onwards, the pyrethroid alpha-cypermethrin was applied with compression pumps, and entomological surveillance was initiated in 2016. METHODS Eight sentinel sites were established in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. IRS coverage was monitored by household survey, quality of insecticide application was measured by HPLC, presence and abundance of the VL vector was monitored by CDC light traps, insecticide resistance was measured with WHO diagnostic assays and case incidence was determined from the VL case register KAMIS. RESULTS Complete treatment of houses with IRS increased across all sites from 57% in 2016 to 70% of houses in 2019, rising to >80% if partial house IRS coverage is included (except West Bengal). The quality of insecticide application has improved compared to previous studies, average doses of insecticide on filters papers ranged from 1.52 times the target dose of 25mg/m2 alpha-cypermethrin in 2019 to 1.67 times in 2018. Resistance to DDT has continued to increase, but the vector was not resistant to carbamates, organophosphates or pyrethroids. The annual and seasonal abundance of P. argentipes declined between 2016 to 2019 with an overall infection rate of 0.03%. This was associated with a decline in VL incidence for the blocks represented by the sentinel sites from 1.16 per 10,000 population in 2016 to 0.51 per 10,000 in 2019. CONCLUSION Through effective case detection and management reducing the infection reservoirs for P. argentipes in the human population combined with IRS keeping P. argentipes abundance and infectivity low has reduced VL transmission. This combination of effective case management and vector control has now brought India within reach of the VL elimination targets

    Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð„with constraintsð ð ð„ „ ðandðŽð„ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis

    Combined searches for the production of supersymmetric top quark partners in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A combination of searches for top squark pair production using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment, is presented. Signatures with at least 2 jets and large missing transverse momentum are categorized into events with 0, 1, or 2 leptons. New results for regions of parameter space where the kinematical properties of top squark pair production and top quark pair production are very similar are presented. Depending on themodel, the combined result excludes a top squarkmass up to 1325 GeV for amassless neutralino, and a neutralinomass up to 700 GeV for a top squarkmass of 1150 GeV. Top squarks with masses from 145 to 295 GeV, for neutralino masses from 0 to 100 GeV, with a mass difference between the top squark and the neutralino in a window of 30 GeV around the mass of the top quark, are excluded for the first time with CMS data. The results of theses searches are also interpreted in an alternative signal model of dark matter production via a spin-0 mediator in association with a top quark pair. Upper limits are set on the cross section for mediator particle masses of up to 420 GeV

    Search for new particles in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A search is presented for new particles produced at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV, using events with energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb(-1), collected in 2017-2018 with the CMS detector. Machine learning techniques are used to define separate categories for events with narrow jets from initial-state radiation and events with large-radius jets consistent with a hadronic decay of a W or Z boson. A statistical combination is made with an earlier search based on a data sample of 36 fb(-1), collected in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the standard model background expectation determined from control samples in data. The results are interpreted in terms of limits on the branching fraction of an invisible decay of the Higgs boson, as well as constraints on simplified models of dark matter, on first-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to quarks and neutrinos, and on models with large extra dimensions. Several of the new limits, specifically for spin-1 dark matter mediators, pseudoscalar mediators, colored mediators, and leptoquarks, are the most restrictive to date.Peer reviewe
