Xenon forms stable compound with fluorine
Experiments show that xenon and fluorine combine readily at 400 deg C to form xenon tetrafluoride, which is colorless, crystalline, chemically stable and solid at room temperature. This process can be used for the separation of xenon from mixtures with other noble gases
Gamma–ray spectroscopy with single–carrier collection in high–resistivity semiconductors
With the standard plane–parallel configuration of semiconductor detectors, good γ–ray spectra can only be obtained when both electrons and holes are completely collected. We show by calculations (and experiments) that with contacts of hemispherical configuration one can obtain γ–ray spectra of adequate resolution and with signal heights of nearly full amplitude even when only one type of carrier is collected. Experiments with CdTe detectors for which the µτ product for electrons is about 10^(3) times that of the holes confirm these calculations. The adoption of hemispherical contacts thus widens the range of high–resistivity semiconductors potentially acceptable for γ–ray detection at room temperature
Direct observation and imaging of a spin-wave soliton with like symmetry
The prediction and realization of magnetic excitations driven by electrical
currents via the spin transfer torque effect, enables novel magnetic
nano-devices where spin-waves can be used to process and store information. The
functional control of such devices relies on understanding the properties of
non-linear spin-wave excitations. It has been demonstrated that spin waves can
show both an itinerant character, but also appear as localized solitons. So
far, it was assumed that localized solitons have essentially cylindrical,
like symmetry. Using a newly developed high-sensitivity time-resolved
magnetic x-ray microscopy, we instead observe the emergence of a novel
localized soliton excitation with a nodal line, i.e. with like symmetry.
Micromagnetic simulations identify the physical mechanism that controls the
transition from to like solitons. Our results suggest a potential new
pathway to design artificial atoms with tunable dynamical states using
nanoscale magnetic devices
The Limits of Anthropocene Narratives
The rapidly growing transdisciplinary enthusiasm about developing new kinds of Anthropocene stories is based on the shared assumption that the Anthropocene predicament is best made sense of by narrative means. Against this assumption, this article argues that the challenge we are facing today does not merely lie in telling either scientific, socio-political, or entangled Anthropocene narratives to come to terms with our current condition. Instead, the challenge lies in coming to grips with how the stories we can tell in the Anthropocene relate to the radical novelty of the Anthropocene condition about which no stories can be told. What we need to find are meaningful ways to reconcile an inherited commitment to narrativization and the collapse of storytelling as a vehicle of understanding the Anthropocene as our current predicament
Chandra X-ray Observations of the Quadruply Lensed Quasar RX J0911.4+0551
We present results from X-ray observations of the quadruply lensed quasar RX
J0911.4+0551 using data obtained with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer
(ACIS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The 29 ks observation detects a
total of ~404 X-ray photons (0.3 to 7.0 keV) from the four images of the lensed
quasar. Deconvolution of the aspect corrected data resolves all four lensed
images, with relative positions in good agreement with optical measurements.
When compared to contemporaneous optical data, one of the lensed images
(component A3) is dimmer by a factor of ~6 in X-rays with respect to the 2
brighter images (components A1 and A2). Spectral fitting for the combined
images shows significant intrinsic absorption in the soft (0.2 to 2.4 keV)
energy band, consistent with the mini-BAL nature of this quasar, while a
comparison with ROSAT PSPC observations from 1990 shows a drop of ~6.5 in the
total soft bandpass flux. The observations also detect ~157 X-ray photons
arising from extended emission of the nearby cluster (peaked ~42" SW of
RXJ0911.4+0551) responsible for the large external shear present in the system.
The Chandra observation reveals the cluster emission to be complex and
non-spherical, and yields a cluster temperature of kT = 2.3^{+1.8}_{-0.8} keV
and a 2.0 to 10 keV cluster luminosity within a 1 Mpc radius of L_X =
7.6_{-0.2}^{+0.6} x 10^{43} ergs/s (error bars denote 90% confidence limits).
Our mass estimate of the cluster within its virial radius is 2.3^{+1.8}_{-0.7}
x 10^{14} solar, and is a factor of 2 smaller than, although consistent with,

Second-generation antipsychotic use during pregnancy and risk of congenital malformations
Purpose To study if second-generation antipsychotic (S-GA) use during the first trimester of pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of major congenital malformations (MCM). Methods A population-based birth cohort study using national register data extracted from the Drugs and Pregnancy database in Finland, years 1996-2017. The sampling frame included 1,273,987 pregnant women. We included singleton pregnancies ending in live or stillbirth or termination of pregnancy due to severe malformation. Pregnancies with exposure to known teratogens were excluded. Women were categorized into three groups: exposed to S-GAs (n = 3478), exposed to first-generation antipsychotics (F-GAs) (n = 1030), and unexposed (no purchases of S-GAs or F-GAs during pregnancy, n = 22,540). We excluded genetic conditions and compared the prevalence of MCMs in S-GA users to the two comparison groups using multiple logistic regression models. Results Use of S-GAs during early pregnancy was not associated with an increased risk of overall MCMs compared to unexposed (adjusted odds ratio, OR 0.92; 95% CI 0.72-1.19) or to F-GA users (OR 0.82; 95% CI 0.56-1.20). Of individual S-GAs, olanzapine use was associated with an increased risk of overall MCMs (OR 2.12; 95% CI 1.19-3.76), and specifically, an increased risk of musculoskeletal malformations (OR 3.71; 95% CI 1.35-10.1) when compared to unexposed, while comparisons to F-GA users did not show significant results. Conclusions Olanzapine use is associated with an increased risk of major congenital malformations and specifically, musculoskeletal malformations. Use during pregnancy should be restricted to situations where no safer alternatives exist.Peer reviewe
Self-erasing and rewritable wettability patterns on ZnO thin films
Self-erasing patterns allow a substrate to be patterned multiple times or could store temporary information for secret communications, and are mostly based on photochromic molecules to change the color of the pattern. Herein we demonstrate self-erasing patterns of wettability on thin ZnO films made by atomic layer deposition. Hydrophilic patterns are written using UV light and decay spontaneously, i.e. become hydrophobic, or are erased aided by vacuum conditions or heat. We demonstrate that these patterns can be applied for channels to confine flow of water without physical walls.Peer reviewe
Understanding global patterns of domestic cannabis cultivation
Purpose – Unlike other plant-based drugs, cannabis is increasingly grown within the country of consumption, requires minimal processing before consumption, and can be easily grown almost anywhere using indoor or outdoor cultivation techniques. Developments in agronomic technologies have led to global growth in domestic cultivation, both by cannabis users for self- and social-supply, and by more commercially-oriented growers. Cross-national research is needed to better understand who is involved in domestic cultivation, the diversity in cultivation practices and motivations, and cultivators’ interaction with the criminal justice system and cannabis control policies. Design/methodology/approach – The article introduces the Global Cannabis Cultivation Research Consortium (GCCRC), describes its evolution and aims, and outlines the methodology of its ongoing cross-national online survey of cannabis cultivation. Findings – Despite differing national contexts, the GCCRC successfully developed a core questionnaire to be used in different countries. It accommodates varying research interests through the addition of optional survey sections. The benefits to forming an international consortium to conduct web-based survey research include the sharing of expertise, recruitment efforts and problem-solving. Research limitations/implications – The article discusses the limitations of using non-representative online sampling and the strategies used to increase validity. Originality/value – The GCCRC is conducting the largest cross-national study of domestic cannabis cultivation to date. The aim is not only to better understand patterns of cannabis cultivation and how they differ between countries but also to build upon online engagement methodology with hidden populations
Calcium and phosphorus metabolism in peripartal dogs
Recommended allowances for calcium and phosphorus are mostly based on factorial calculations partly set at the level determined adequate for giant breeds (Nutrient requirements of dogs and cats. Washington, DC, USA: The National Academies Press. 2006). Information about appropriateness of supply with both minerals during the peripartal phase is limited. From other species is known that bone mineral stores are used in addition to oral intake of calcium and phosphorus in periods of higher needs such as gestation and lactation. The aim of this study was to determine parameters of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis in female dogs receiving the recommended amount of these minerals according to NRC (Nutrient requirements of dogs and cats. Washington, DC, USA: The National Academies Press. 2006) during the peripartal phase. In five Beagles and four Foxhound crossbreds, all primiparous with a litter size of 1–8 puppies, apparent digestibility of calcium and phosphorus as well as serum parameters of mineral metabolism (total and ionised calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, bone specific alkaline phosphatase, crosslaps) was determined in the period of 12–9 days before and 4–9 days after parturition. The apparent digestibility of calcium was relatively low and did not differ significantly between both peripartal phases, whereas the apparent digestibility of phosphorus increased during lactation. Serum concentrations of calcium (total as well as ionised), phosphorus and parathyroid hormone did not differ between gestation and lactation. The bone resorption marker serum crosslaps increased in lactating dogs but most individual values were within the reference range for adult female dogs at maintenance. On the other hand, the bone formation marker bone specific alkaline phosphatase decreased from prepartal to postpartal phase with values clearly above reference range in both phases. Based on the results especially of the bone markers, which stayed within the reference range during the peripartal phase without indicating predominant bone resorption, we hypothesise that the applied recommended daily allowances defined for peripartal dogs are appropriate
