    A New Shear-Velocity Model of Continental Australia Based on Multi-Scale Surface-Wave Tomography

    The Australian Seismological Reference Model (AuSREM) represents a state-of-the-art geophysical synthesis of the Australian continent. To date, its shear-wave component has limited resolution at lower-crustal to uppermost-mantle depths, where it is mainly constrained by sparse measurements collected at the local scale. In this study, we compile a large data set of surface-wave phase velocities based on seismic ambient noise and teleseismic earthquakes, to produce Rayleigh and Love phase-velocity maps of continental Australia in a broad period range (4–200 s). Via transdimensional Bayesian inversion, we translate the phase-velocity maps into a 3-D shear-wave velocity model extending to 300 km depth. Owing to the unprecedented seismic coverage and to the joint use of ambient-noise and teleseismic data, the retrieved model fills a tomographic gap in the known shear-wave velocity structure of the continent, comprising lower-crustal to uppermost mantle depths. Consistent with AuSREM, strong velocity heterogeneities in our model highlight the (faster) cratonic blocks and the (slower) sedimentary basins at upper-crustal depths. At mantle depths, the most prominent feature of the continent is a large-scale eastward decrease in shear-wave velocity. We interpret our observations in light of the relevant literature, and produce depth maps of the Moho and lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB). Notably, our LAB proxy features a stripe of thicker lithosphere extending to the east coast, which is not visible in the AuSREM LAB model. This observation supports the idea that lateral variations in lithospheric thickness control both the composition and volume of surface volcanism in eastern Australia

    3-D shear wave velocity model of the lithosphere below the Sardinia-Corsica continental block based on Rayleigh-wave phase velocities

    Rayleigh-wave dispersion curves from both ambient noise and teleseismic events allow us to provide the first high-resolution 3-D shear wave velocity (VS) model of the crust and upper mantle below the Sardinia–Corsica microplate, an important continental block for understanding the evolution of the central-western Mediterranean. For a wide range of periods (from 3 to ∼30 s), the phase velocities of the study area are systematically higher than those measured within the Italian peninsula, in agreement with a colder geotherm. Relative and absolute variations in the VS allow us to detect a very heterogeneous upper crust down to 8 km, as opposed to a relatively homogeneous middle and lower crust. The isosurface at 4.1 km s−1 is consistent with a rather flat Moho at a depth of 28.0 ± 1.8 km (2σ). The lithospheric mantle is relatively cold, and we constrain the thermal lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary at ∼100 km. We find our estimate consistent with a continental geotherm based on a surface heat flow of 60 mW m−2. Our results suggest that most of the lithosphere endured the complex history of deformation experienced by the study area and imply, in general, that deep tectonic processes do not easily destabilize the deeper portion of the continental lithosphere, despite leaving a clear surface signature

    Stereotactic Radiotherapy and Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Localized Prostate Cancer: A Retrospective Mono-institutional Experience

    Background/Aim: Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is an effective treatment for localized prostate cancer. However, is it not clear whether the addition of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to SRT is beneficial. The aim of this study was to analyze the outcomes of a series of patients treated with SRT plus ADT for localized prostate cancer. Patients and Methods: Patients were treated with SRT with 42 Gy in 7 fractions with volumetric-modulated arc therapy plus Image Guided Radiotherapy (V-MAT IGRT) technique. ADT was administered to patients with intermediate unfavorable-and high-risk disease. Study endpoints were biochemical disease-free survival (bDFS), overall survival (OS), acute and late toxicity and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) using international prostate cancer symptoms scale (IPSS) and international index of erectile function (IIEF). Results: A total of 170 consecutive patients were identified, of which 49 (28.8%) with low-risk, 15 (8.8%) with favorable intermediate-risk 76 (44.7%) with unfavorable intermediate risk and 30 (17.6%) with high-risk class. All patients of unfavorable intermediate-and high-risk groups were for administered LHRH analogue concurrently to SRT and for at least 6 months. Patients with unfavorable intermediate and high-risk presented a 5-year bDFS of 81.7% and 76.9%, respectively. Conclusion: SRT consisting of 42 Gy in seven fractions with short-term ADT represents a safe and effective treatment for unfavorable intermediate and high risk prostate cancer. Our results support the need of high quality studies to test the efficacy of ADT combined with SRT for unfavorable intermediate-and high-risk localized prostate cancer

    Abstract This paper proposes an integrated rehabilitation project of an abandoned farmhouse in a rural area in Southern Italy. The building underwent a functional recovery to become a tourist accommodation. The use of natural materials can reduce energy consumption and carbon footprints considering environmental sustainability aspects. A proper selection of interventions targeted for the specific warm climate has led to benefits for heating, cooling and lighting in the interior spaces. The project also includes the integration of hydraulic facilities and landscaping, such as planting hedges, green barriers and native trees

    Alteration of Liver Enzymes Is a Feature of the Myh9-Related Disease Syndrome

    BACKGROUND: MYH9-related disease (MYH9-RD) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic syndrome characterized by congenital thrombocytopenia associated with the risk of developing progressive nephropathy, sensorineural deafness, and presenile cataract. During the collection of a large case-series of patients with MYH9-RD we noticed several cases with unexplained elevation of liver enzymes. Our aim was to evaluate if the alteration of liver tests is a feature of the MYH9-RD and to define its clinical significance. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data concerning liver tests, prospectively recorded in the Italian Registry for MYH9-RD, were collected and compared with those of three control populations: patients with autoimmune thrombocytopenia, patients with inherited thrombocytopenias other than MYH9-RD, and the participants to a large epidemiologic survey in an Italian geographic isolate. Thirty-eight of 75 evaluable MYH9-RD patients (50.7%) showed an elevation of ALT and/or AST, and 17 of 63 (27.0%) an increase of GGT. The increases ranged from 1.9 ± 0.7 to 2.7 ± 1.6 fold the upper normal limit. The prevalence of liver test alterations was significantly higher in MYH9-RD patients than in each of the control populations, with odds ratios ranging from 8.2 (95% CIs 2.2-44.8) to 24.7 (14.8-40.8). Clinical follow-up and more detailed liver studies of a subset of patients, including ultrasound liver scan, liver elastography and liver biopsy in one case, did not show any significant structural damage or evolution towards liver insufficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Elevation of liver enzymes is a frequent and previously unrecognized feature of the MYH9-RD syndrome; however, this defect does not appear to have poor prognostic value

L\u2019obiettivo principale del gruppo di lavoro \ue8 quello di ampliare le conoscenze relative alla specificit\ue0 della metodologia LCA applicata ai processi di gestione e di trattamento dei rifiuti. L\u2019articolo riporta otto casi studio condotti da alcuni dei partecipanti al gruppo di lavoro, con il duplice obiettivo di mostrare il vasto campo di applicazione della metodologia LCA pur mantenendosi all\u2019interno del settore rifiuti e le specificit\ue0 dell\u2019applicazione di tale metodologia ai processi di gestione e trattamento dei rifiuti.     Red Listing plants under full national responsibility: Extinction risk and threats in the vascular flora endemic to Italy

    Taxa endemic to a country are key elements for setting national conservation priorities and for driving conservation strategies, since their persistence is entirely dependent on national policy. We applied the IUCN Red List categories to all Italian endemic vascular plants (1340 taxa) to assess their current risk of extinction and to highlight their major threats. Our results revealed that six taxa are already extinct and that 22.4% (300 taxa) are threatened with extinction, while 18.4% (247; especially belonging to apomictic groups) have been categorized as Data Deficient. Italian endemic vascular plants are primarily threatened by natural habitat modification due to agriculture, residential and tourism development. Taxa occurring in coastal areas and lowlands, where anthropogenic impacts and habitat destruction are concentrated, display the greatest population decline and extinction. The national network of protected areas could be considered effective in protecting endemic-rich areas (ERAs) and endemic taxa, but ineffective in protecting narrow endemic-rich areas (NERAs), accordingly changes to the existing network may increase the effectiveness of protection. For the first time in the Mediterranean Basin biodiversity hotspot, we present a comprehensive extinction assessment for endemic plants under the full responsibility of a single country. This would provide an important step towards the prioritization and conservation of threatened endemic flora at Italian, European, and Mediterranean level. A successful conservation strategy of the Italian endemic vascular flora should implement the protected area system, solve some taxonomical criticism in poorly known genera, and should rely on monitoring threatened species, and on developing species-specific action plans
