In our country it has been believed that there is no histoplasmosis here in Japan. However, from the above clinical signs, radiological characteristics, laboratory tests, pathological and mycological examinations, and experimental findings, we believe this is the first case of histoplasmosis in Japan.</p

    BASEBALL SPIN AND PITCHERS’ PERFORMANCE

    Get PDF
The motion of the ball thrown by a pitcher is influenced by three forces: gravity, drag force due to air resistance, and lift force which deflects a ball vertically or laterally due to ball spin. The lift force acting on the ball increases with spin rate and movement speed when the spin axis of the ball is orthogonal to the direction of ball movement. Among individual pitchers there were great variations in spin on their fastballs, both in spin rate and in direction of the spin axis. Ball spin rate was positively correlated with increases in distance from the optimal contact point of the swung bat (sweet spot) to the actual point of contact. That is, batters tend to hit under the ball when it has a high spin rate, even for balls of the same velocity. Abnormal or unique ball spin is an important aspect of superior performance for pitchers

Field trials on the spatial repellency of metofluthrin-impregnated plastic strips for mosquitoes present in shelters without walls (beruga) were carried out in Lombok, Indonesia. A major reduction in the incidence of human biting by Culex quinquefasciatus was achieved, and the use of two strips per beruga repelled >60% of the mosquitoes for at least 11 wk while four strips repelled >60% of the mosquitoes for more than 15 weeks. The technique was found to be a practical long-term solution for the prevention of mosquito bites without using electricity or heat to evaporate the metofluthrin

Operational status of the superconducting system for LHD

    Get PDF
Large Helical Device (LHD) is a heliotron-type experimental fusion device which has the capability of confining current-less and steady-state plasma. The primary feature on the engineering aspect of LHD is using superconducting (SC) coils for magnetic confinement: two pool boiling helical coils (H1, H2) and three pairs of forced-flow poloidal coils (IV, IS, OV). These coils are connected to the power supplies by SC bus-lines. Five plasma experimental campaigns have been performed successfully in four years from 1998. The fifth operation cycle started in August 2001 and finished in March 2002. We have succeeded to obtain high plasma parameters such as 10 keV of electron temperature, 5 keV of ion temperature and beta value of 3.2%. The operational histories of the SC coils, the SC bus-lines and the cryogenic system have been demonstrating high reliability of the large scale SC system. The operational status and the results of device engineering experiments are summarized

Sleeping arrangement and house structure affect bed net use in villages along Lake Victoria

Abstract

Background

Although insecticide-treated bed nets are effective tools, use often does not follow ownership. House structure and space arrangements may make the attempt to use bed nets difficult, especially for school age children. The objectives of this study were to explore whether an individual's sleeping arrangements and house structure affect bed net use in villages along Lake Victoria in western Kenya.

Methods

Sleeping arrangements of residents were directly observed for use of a bed net, use of a bed, and location. House size, number and types of rooms, bed availability, and residents' ages were estimated. The family heads and mothers were asked about the reason for not using bed nets. Individual bed net use was examined against age and sleeping arrangement. Net use at the household level was examined against four variables: bed availability, bed net availability, house size, and number of rooms.

Results

Bed net use by children between five and 15 years of age was lower than that among the other age classes. However, age was dropped from the final model, and sleeping arrangement was significantly associated with net use. Net use was significantly associated with bed availability, number of rooms and their interaction.

Conclusion

Net use was affected by sleeping arrangement and availability of suitable locations for hanging nets, in addition to net availability. Most residents had likely not realized that sleeping arrangement was a factor in net use. The ease of hanging a net is particularly important for children.</p

Luteal blood flow in patients undergoing GnRH agonist long protocol

Abstract

Background

Blood flow in the corpus luteum (CL) is closely related to luteal function. It is unclear how luteal blood flow is regulated. Standardized ovarian-stimulation protocol with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa long protocol) causes luteal phase defect because it drastically suppresses serum LH levels. Examining luteal blood flow in the patient undergoing GnRHa long protocol may be useful to know whether luteal blood flow is regulated by LH.

Methods

Twenty-four infertile women undergoing GnRHa long protocol were divided into 3 groups dependent on luteal supports; 9 women were given ethinylestradiol plus norgestrel (Planovar) orally throughout the luteal phase (control group); 8 women were given HCG 2,000 IU on days 2 and 4 day after ovulation induction in addition to Planovar (HCG group); 7 women were given vitamin E (600 mg/day) orally throughout the luteal phase in addition to Planovar (vitamin E group). Blood flow impedance was measured in each CL during the mid-luteal phase by transvaginal color-pulsed-Doppler-ultrasonography and was expressed as a CL-resistance index (CL-RI).

Results

Serum LH levels were remarkably suppressed in all the groups. CL-RI in the control group was more than the cutoff value (0.51), and only 2 out of 9 women had CL-RI values < 0.51. Treatments with HCG or vitamin E significantly improved the CL-RI to less than 0.51. Seven of the 8 women in the HCG group and all of the women in the vitamin E group had CL-RI < 0.51.

Conclusion

Patients undergoing GnRHa long protocol had high luteal blood flow impedance with very low serum LH levels. HCG administration improved luteal blood flow impedance. This suggests that luteal blood flow is regulated by LH.</p

Baryon Triality and Neutrino Masses from an Anomalous Flavor U(1)

We construct a concise U(1)_X Froggatt-Nielsen model in which baryon triality, a discrete gauge Z_3 symmetry, arises from U(1)_X breaking. The proton is thus stable, however, R-parity is violated. With the proper choice of U(1)_X charges we can obtain neutrino masses and mixings consistent with an explanation of the atmospheric and solar neutrino anomalies in terms of neutrino oscillations, with no right-handed neutrinos required. The only mass scale apart from M_grav is m_3/2 ~ m_soft.Comment: matches published version, typos corrected, references added, 54 pages, 3 figures, 5 table

First Cool-Down Performance of the LHD

The first cool-down test of the Large Helical Device (LHD) and the performance of the LHD cryogenic system during the first cycle operation are described. The first cool-down started on Feb. 23, 1998 and finished on Mar. 22. After the cool-down, the excitation tests of the SC coils up to 1.5 T and the first cycle operations for plasma physics experiments were conducted until May 18. The first cycle operation was successfully completed after the warm-up process to room temperature from May 19 to Jun. 15. The cooling characteristics of the LHD, such as temperature distribution during cool-down, heat loads under steady state condition, reliability during long-term operation, are reporte
