    Since the beginning of humanity, plants have been manipulated by humans by artificial selection to obtain changes in their characteristics. This progress has been achieved through the domestication of the species. Panicum coloratum is a species of summer perennial grass, megathermic, tolerates waterlogging, cold and slightly saline soils. It is of African origin and used as fodder in various parts of the world. In Argentina around 130.500 hectares are sown, the most widespread varieties are: var. coloratum, and var. makarikariense Goossens. Its characteristics of determined flowering and ununiform ripening within the panicle, added to a very low retention of the seeds after maturation, establish serious difficulties in harvesting quality seeds. Megathermic forage species are good producers in forage quantity and, in turn, possess good quality. The objective of the work was to study the dynamics of seed dehiscence and the forage production of two cultivars of Panicum coloratum var. makarikariense (cv. Kapivera and cv. Bambatsi). The seed fall was evaluated weekly for 70 days between March-May 2017 and 2019 on 15 random inflorescences of each cultivar. Once the seed harvest was completed in May 2017 and 2019, the panicles were cut and the panicle height, panicle length, rachis length, wet weight, dry weight and percentage of dry matter were analyzed. Through a χÂČ distribution, it was found that there is experimental evidence that indicates that the dynamics of seed fall are different among cultivars. An analysis of main components was carried out in each year under study to simultaneously evaluate all the variables related to biomass, in the two ACPs mentioned there was not a defined grouping of the plants according to the cultivation to which they correspond

    CONVERGENT AND DIVERGENT ANGLES OF A SOLID-FUEL ROCKET NOZZLE AND ITS INFLUENCES ON THE MOTOR’S THRUST CURVE

    The main goal of this work is to investigate how the angles of a convergent-divergent rocket nozzle influence the thrust curve of a solid-propulsion rocket. The work has been conducted within an academic rocketry team. As there is not clear reasoning on how to define these angles, the present research provides insights on how these geometrical parameters influence the performance of a rocket motor. A 2D-axisymmetric CFD domain is considered, comprising the fluid domain inside and outside the nozzle, to give room for the shock waves to happen and also accommodate the flow. The study comprises a baseline geometry and twelve modified designs, varying the convergent and the divergent angles of the nozzle. Since the convergent diameter must match the chamber diameter, it is fixed. For the divergent diameter, there is no such restriction; therefore, there are two possibilities: a divergent section with the same divergent diameter or with the same length as the baseline. The benchmark thrust curve is generated with a MATLAB code based on solid-fuel modeling and the De Laval theory. The curve is divided into six steady-state simulations, using boundary conditions of mass flow, pressure and temperature at the inlet and pressure and temperature at the outlet. The baseline geometry is simulated in Ansys Fluent and normalized by the MATLAB benchmark. A mesh study selects which mesh and turbulence model to use based on this normalization. The modified geometries are then compared to the baseline. The main quantity of interest is the thrust but quantities such as static pressure and average velocity at the nozzle exit aid the understanding of the changes in thrust

    Survival of a wild ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) with abdominal trauma in an anthropogenically disturbed habitat

    Soft tissue injuries are rarely reported in wild primates as these heal fast, are not obvious, and are rapidly scavenged or decompose after death. An adult female ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) was found to have a chronic gastrointestinal fistula in Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar. She was observed monthly for 13 months until her remains, which showed evidence of dog predation, were found. Until then, she was in good body condition, had gained weight from the previous year and was observed to exhibit normal behaviour and produce an infant. This report documents a wild strepsirrhine primate able to survive significant soft tissue injury in an anthropogenically disturbed habitat.  RÉSUMÉ Il est rare que des blessures dans les tissus mous soient signalĂ©s chez les primates vivant Ă  l’état sauvage car ces blessures guĂ©rissent rapidement, sont moins visibles ou que les animaux eux-mĂȘmes se dĂ©composent ou sont rapidement mangĂ©s par d’autres animaux aprĂšs leur mort.     Passive galaxies as tracers of cluster environments at z~2

    Even 10 billion years ago, the cores of the first galaxy clusters are often found to host a characteristic population of massive galaxies with already suppressed star formation. Here we search for distant cluster candidates at z~2 using massive passive galaxies as tracers. With a sample of ~40 spectroscopically confirmed passive galaxies at 1.3<z<2.1, we tune photometric redshifts of several thousands passive sources in the full 2 sq.deg. COSMOS field. This allows us to map their density in redshift slices, probing the large scale structure in the COSMOS field as traced by passive sources. We report here on the three strongest passive galaxy overdensities that we identify in the redshift range 1.5<z<2.5. While the actual nature of these concentrations is still to be confirmed, we discuss their identification procedure, and the arguments supporting them as candidate galaxy clusters (likely mid-10^13 M_sun range). Although this search approach is likely biased towards more evolved structures, it has the potential to select still rare, cluster-like environments close to their epoch of first appearance, enabling new investigations of the evolution of galaxies in the context of structure growth.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; A&A Letters, in pres

    Influence of solar radiation on the production of secondary metabolites in three rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars

    Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most produced and consumed cereals worldwide and has its importance highlighted mainly in developing countries, where it plays a strategic economic and social role. Due to the importance of rice in the diet, its composition and nutritional characteristics are directly related to the health of the population. In the rice production systems, some climatic factors are determinants for the good performance of the crop, inducing the biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites. The present study determined the metabolic profiles through UV-visible spectrophotometry of leaf samples of three rice cultivars (Marques -- white, \\^Onix -- black, and Rubi -- red pericarp) throughout the rice's vegetative stages in two experimental times, from September to December 2015 and from January to April 2016. Solar radiation was recorded along the experimental period. To the organosolvent extracts of leaf samples, UV-vis spectrophotometric techniques were applied and the quantitative results of certain metabolites, e.g., chlorophylls, carotenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, and sugars, as well the antioxidant activity, which were analyzed by chemometrics tools.     Restrictions on the lifetime of sterile neutrinos from primordial nucleosynthesis

    We analyze the influence of decaying sterile neutrinos with the masses in the range 1-140 MeV on the primordial Helium-4 abundance, explicitly solving the Boltzmann equations for all particle species, taking into account neutrino flavour oscillations, and paying special attention to systematic uncertainties. We show that the Helium abundance depends only on the sterile neutrino lifetime and not on the way the active-sterile mixing is distributed between flavours, and derive an upper bound on the lifetime. We also demonstrate that the recent results of Izotov & Thuan [arXiv:1001.4440], who find 2sigma higher than predicted by the standard primordial nucleosynthesis value of Helium-4 abundance, are consistent with the presence in the plasma of sterile neutrinos with the lifetime 0.01-2 seconds. The decay of these particles perturbs the spectra of (decoupled) neutrinos and heats photons, changing the ratio of neutrino to photon energy density, that can be interpreted as extra neutrino species at the recombination epoch.Comment: 17 pp. + Appendices.     Automated reliability assessment for spectroscopic redshift measurements

    We present a new approach to automate the spectroscopic redshift reliability assessment based on machine learning (ML) and characteristics of the redshift probability density function (PDF). We propose to rephrase the spectroscopic redshift estimation into a Bayesian framework, in order to incorporate all sources of information and uncertainties related to the redshift estimation process, and produce a redshift posterior PDF that will be the starting-point for ML algorithms to provide an automated assessment of a redshift reliability. As a use case, public data from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey is exploited to present and test this new methodology. We first tried to reproduce the existing reliability flags using supervised classification to describe different types of redshift PDFs, but due to the subjective definition of these flags, soon opted for a new homogeneous partitioning of the data into distinct clusters via unsupervised classification. After assessing the accuracy of the new clusters via resubstitution and test predictions, unlabelled data from preliminary mock simulations for the Euclid space mission are projected into this mapping to predict their redshift reliability labels.Comment: Submitted on 02 June 2017 (v1).     Amine-Gold Linked Single-Molecule Junctions: Experiment and Theory

    The measured conductance distribution for single molecule benzenediamine-gold junctions, based on 59,000 individual conductance traces recorded while breaking a gold point contact in solution, has a clear peak at 0.0064 G0_{0} with a width of ±\pm 40%. Conductance calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) for 15 distinct junction geometries show a similar spread. Differences in local structure have a limited influence on conductance because the amine-Au bonding motif is well-defined and flexible. The average calculated conductance (0.046 G0_{0}) is seven times larger than experiment, suggesting the importance of many-electron corrections beyond DFT

    The VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS). Exploring the dependence of the three-point correlation function on stellar mass and luminosity at 0.5<z<1.1

    The three-point correlation function (3PCF) is a powerful probe to investigate the clustering of matter in the Universe in a complementary way with respect to lower-order statistics, providing additional information with respect to the two-point correlation function and allowing us to shed light on biasing, nonlinear processes, and deviations from Gaussian statistics. In this paper, we analyse the first data release of the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS), determining the dependence of the three-point correlation function on luminosity and stellar mass at z=[0.5,1.1]z=[0.5,1.1]. We exploit the VIPERS Public Data Release 1, consisting of more than 50,000 galaxies with B-band magnitudes in the range −21.6â‰ČMB−5log⁥(h)â‰Č−19.9-21.6\lesssim M_{\rm B}-5\log(h)\lesssim-19.9 and stellar masses in the range 9.8â‰Člog⁥(M⋆[h−2 M⊙])â‰Č10.79.8\lesssim\log(M_\star[h^{-2}\,M_\odot])\lesssim 10.7. We measure both the connected 3PCF and the reduced 3PCF in redshift space, probing different configurations and scales, in the range 2.5<r 2.5<r\,[Mpc/h]<20<20. We find a significant dependence of the reduced 3PCF on scales and triangle shapes, with stronger anisotropy at larger scales (r∌10r\sim10 Mpc/h) and an almost flat trend at smaller scales, r∌2.5r\sim2.5 Mpc/h. Massive and luminous galaxies present a larger connected 3PCF, while the reduced 3PCF is remarkably insensitive to magnitude and stellar masses in the range we explored. These trends, already observed at low redshifts, are confirmed for the first time to be still valid up to z=1.1z=1.1, providing support to the hierarchical scenario for which massive and bright systems are expected to be more clustered. The possibility of using the measured 3PCF to provide independent constraints on the linear galaxy bias bb has also been explored, showing promising results in agreement with other probes.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&
