Spectrum Utilization of Cognitive Radio in Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks - A Review
The increasing demand for intelligent control and automation in industry requires better use of the radio spectrum due to the use of industrial wireless sensor networks (IWSNs). Cognitive Radio (CR) is a promising technology to improve the spectrum utilization by sensing spectrum holes. Research in this area is still in its infancy, but it is progressing rapidly. In this paper, industrial environment with different wireless technology, such as WirelessHART and ISA 100.11a is investigated. Various sensing schemes and the challenges associated for the cognitive radio are reviewed. In addition, the paper discussed the methods relevant to industrial applications, covering architecture, spectrum access, interference management, spectrum sensing and spectrum sharing
Increased levels of NETosis biomarkers in high-grade serous ovarian cancer patients’ biofluids: Potential role in disease diagnosis and management
Introduction: High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the second most frequent gynecological malignancy but the most lethal, partially due to the spread of the disease through the peritoneal cavity. Recent evidence has shown that, apart from their role in immune defense through phagocytosis and degranulation, neutrophils are able to participate in cancer progression through the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in a process called NETosis. NETs are composed of DNA, histones, calprotectin, myeloperoxidase (MPO) and elastase and the NETosis process has been proposed as a pre-requisite for the establishment of omental metastases in early stages of HGSOC. Nevertheless, its role in advanced stages remains to be elucidated. Therefore, our principal aim is to characterize a NETosis biomarker profile in biofluids from patients with advanced HGSOC and control women.
Methods: Specifically, five biomarkers of NETosis (cell-free DNA (cfDNA), nucleosomes, citrullinated histone 3 (citH3), calprotectin and MPO) were quantified in plasma and peritoneal fluid (PF) samples from patients (n=45) and control women (n=40).
Results: Our results showed that HGSOC patients presented a higher concentration of cfDNA, citH3 and calprotectin in plasma and of all five NETosis biomarkers in PF than control women. Moreover, these biomarkers showed a strong ability to differentiate the two clinical groups. Interestingly, neoadjuvant treatment (NT) seemed to reduce NETosis biomarkers mainly systemically (plasma) compared to the tumor environment (PF).
Discussion: In conclusion, NETosis biomarkers are present in the tumor environment of patients with advanced HGSOC, which might contribute to the progression of the disease. Besides, plasma cfDNA and calprotectin could represent minimally invasive surrogate biomarkers for HGSOC. Finally, NT modifies NETosis biomarkers levels mainly at the systemic level
Remaining idle time aware intelligent channel bonding schemes for cognitive radio sensor networks
Channel bonding (CB) is a technique used to provide larger bandwidth to users. It has been applied to various networks such as wireless local area networks, wireless sensor networks, cognitive radio networks, and cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs). The implementation of CB in CRSNs needs special attention as primary radio (PR) nodes traffic must be protected from any harmful interference by cognitive radio (CR) sensor nodes. On the other hand, CR sensor nodes need to communicate without interruption to meet their data rate requirements and conserve energy. If CR nodes perform frequent channel switching due to PR traffic then it will be difficult to meet their quality of service and data rate requirements. So, CR nodes need to select those channels which are stable. By stable, we mean those channels which having less PR activity or long remaining idle time and cause less harmful interference to PR nodes. In this paper, we propose two approaches remaining idle time aware intelligent channel bonding (RITCB) and remaining idle time aware intelligent channel bonding with interference prevention (RITCB-IP) for cognitive radio sensor networks which select stable channels for CB which have longest remaining idle time. We compare our approaches with four schemes such as primary radio user activity aware channel bonding scheme, sample width algorithm, cognitive radio network over white spaces and AGILE. Simulation results show that our proposed approaches RITCB and RITCB-IP decrease harmful interference and increases the life time of cognitive radio sensor nodes
Methodology of calculation of construction and hydrodynamic parameters of a foam layer apparatus for mass-transfer processes
Промислова реалізація методу стабілізації газорідинного шару дозволяє значно розширити галузь застосування пінних апаратів і відкриває нові можливості інтенсифікації технологічних процесів з одночасним створенням маловідходних технологій. У статті встановлені основні параметри, що впливають на гідродинаміку пінних апаратів, розглянуті основні конструкції та режими роботи пінних апаратів. Виявлено зв'язок гідродинамічних параметрів. Розглянуто гідродинамічні закономірності пінного шару. Вказані фактори, що впливають на процес масообміну, як в газовій, так і в рідкій фазах. Проведений аналіз ряду досліджень показав, що перспективним напрямком інтенсифікації процесу масообміну є розробка апаратів з трифазним псевдозрідженим шаром зрошуваної насадки складних форм із сітчастих матеріалів. Отже, необхідне проведення спеціальних досліджень гідродинамічних режимів роботи апарату з сітчастою насадкою і визначенням параметрів, що впливають на швидкість переходу насадки з одного режиму в інший.Industrial implementation of the stabilization method of the gas-liquid layer can significantly expand the field of use of foaming apparatus and opens up new opportunities for intensifying technological processes with the simultaneous creation of low-waste technologies. The article establishes the basic parameters influencing the hydrodynamics of foam apparatus, considers the basic constructions and operating modes of foam apparatus. The connection of hydrodynamic parameters is revealed. The hydrodynamic laws of the foam layer are considered. The indicated factors affecting the process of mass transfer, both in the gas and in the liquid phases. The conducted analysis of a number of studies showed that the perspective direction of intensification of the mass transfer process is the development of apparatuses with a three-phase fluidized bed of an irrigated nozzle of complex forms with mesh materials

Comfort and patient-centred care without excessive sedation:the eCASH concept
We propose an integrated and adaptable approach to improve patient care and clinical outcomes through analgesia and light sedation, initiated early during an episode of critical illness and as a priority of care. This strategy, which may be regarded as an evolution of the Pain, Agitation and Delirium guidelines, is conveyed in the mnemonic eCASH—early Comfort using Analgesia, minimal Sedatives and maximal Humane care. eCASH aims to establish optimal patient comfort with minimal sedation as the default presumption for intensive care unit (ICU) patients in the absence of recognised medical requirements for deeper sedation. Effective pain relief is the first priority for implementation of eCASH: we advocate flexible multimodal analgesia designed to minimise use of opioids. Sedation is secondary to pain relief and where possible should be based on agents that can be titrated to a prespecified target level that is subject to regular review and adjustment; routine use of benzodiazepines should be minimised. From the outset, the objective of sedation strategy is to eliminate the use of sedatives at the earliest medically justifiable opportunity. Effective analgesia and minimal sedation contribute to the larger aims of eCASH by facilitating promotion of sleep, early mobilization strategies and improved communication of patients with staff and relatives, all of which may be expected to assist rehabilitation and avoid isolation, confusion and possible long-term psychological complications of an ICU stay. eCASH represents a new paradigm for patient-centred care in the ICU. Energy-efficient packet size optimization for cognitive radio sensor networks
Cognitive Radio (CR) and its dynamic spectrum access capabilities can be exploited by many wireless network architectures including sensor networks. Thus, cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSN) has emerged as a promising solution to address the spectrum-related challenges of wireless sensor networks (WSN). Among others, determination of the optimal packet size is one of the most fundamental problems to be addressed for the practical realization of CRSN. The existing optimal packet size solutions devised for wireless, sensor, and CR networks are not applicable in CRSN regime. Hence, the objective of this paper is to determine the optimal packet size for CRSN that maximizes energy-efficiency while maintaining acceptable interference level for licensed primary users (PU) and achieving reliable event detection at the sink. The energy-efficient optimal packet size is analytically formulated and its variation with respect to different network parameters is observed. Results reveal that PU behavior and channel BER are the most critical parameters in determining the energy-efficient optimal packet size for CRSN. © 2012 IEEE
Surgical treatment of pulmonary arteriovenous malformation: Report of two cases and review of the literature
Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are rare anomalies. The degree of right-to-left shunting, which can lead to cyanosis and paradoxical embolism causing neurological complications, determines the prognosis. We report two cases of PAVM and review the literature. A 45-year-old woman with clinical signs and symptoms of PAVM was examined using several different scanning techniques, which showed a large PAVM in the lower lobe of her right lung. A lobectomy was performed, which revealed a 5 cm diameter PAVM with one feeding artery and multiple veins. Intravenous angiography of a 7-year-old girl with symptoms of fatigue and acro-cyanosis confirmed the presence of a large PAVM in her right lower lobe. The PAVM had two major arteries arising from the aorta, which were ligated during a lobectomy. Both patients recovered well following surgery.
