Assessing foraging strategies of herbivores in Mediterranean oak woodlands: a review of key issues and selected methodologies.
Montados are agro-silvo-pastoral ecosystems,
typical of the Southwest Iberian Peninsula, of high socio-economic and conservation importance, where grazing is a dominant activity. Montados are characterized by na open tree canopy of Quercus sp. and a diverse undercover of shrubs and grasslands that constitute the plant food resources for grazing animals. Plant food resources of Montados are highly variable, both spatially and seasonally, in quantity and quality. Reliable and easy to use methods to monitor grazing are necessary to allow proper understanding of foraging strategies of grazing animals and to set sustainable grazing management. We describe the main characteristics of the plant food resources available for grazing animals, striking its variability, and revise the potential of using N-alkanes and saliva
Search for R-parity Violating Decays of Supersymmetric Particles in e+e- Collisions at LEP
A search, in e^+e^- collisions, for chargino, neutralino, scalar lepton and
scalar quark pair-production is performed, without assuming R-parity
conservation in decays, in the case that only one of the coupling constants
lambda_ijk or lambda''_ijk is non-negligible. No signal is found in data up to
a centre-of-mass energy of 208GeV. Limits on the production cross sections and
on the masses of supersymmetric particles are derived
Measurement of Bose-Einstein Correlations in e+e- -> W+W- at root(s)=189GeV
We investigate Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in W-pair production at
root(s)=189GeV using the L3 detector at LEP. We observe BEC between particles
from a single W decay in good agreement with those from a light-quark Z decay
sample. We investigate their possible existence between particles coming from
different W's. No evidence for such inter-W BEC is found
CVD diamond coated silicon nitride self-mated systems : tribological behaviour under high loads
Friction and wear behaviour of self-mated chemical vapour deposited (CVD) diamond films coating silicon nitride ceramics (Si3N4) were investigated in ambient atmosphere. The tribological tests were conducted in a reciprocal motion ball-on-flat type tribometer under applied normal loads up to 80 N (~10 GPa). Several characterisation techniques - including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and micro-Raman studies - were used in order to assess the quality, stress state and wear resistance of the coatings. In addition, a novel method is presented to estimate the wear coefficient of the diamond coated flat specimens from AFM and optical microscopy (OM) observations of the wear tracks
Study of the e+e- -> Ze+e- process at LEP
The cross section of the process e+e- -> Ze+e is measured with 0.7fb^-1 of
data collected with the L3 detector at LEP. Decays of the Z boson into quarks
and muons are considered at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 183GeV up to
209GeV. The measurements are found to agree with Standard Model predictions,
achieving a precision of about 10% for the hadronic channel
Search for Heavy Neutral and Charged Leptons in e+ e- Annihilation at LEP
A search for exotic unstable neutral and charged heavy leptons as well as for
stable charged heavy leptons is performed with the L3 detector at LEP.
Sequential, vector and mirror natures of heavy leptons are considered. No
evidence for their existence is found and lower limits on their masses are set
Search for Anomalous Couplings in the Higgs Sector at LEP
Anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson are searched for through the processes
e^+ e^- -> H gamma, e^+ e^- -> e^+ e^- H and e^+ e^- -> HZ. The mass range 70
GeV < m_H < 190 GeV is explored using 602 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity
collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies
sqrt(s)=189-209 GeV. The Higgs decay channels H -> ffbar, H -> gamma gamma, H
-> Z\gamma and H -> WW^(*) are considered and no evidence is found for
anomalous Higgs production or decay. Limits on the anomalous couplings d, db,
Delta(g1z), Delta(kappa_gamma) and xi^2 are derived as well as limits on the H
-> gamma gamma and H -> Z gamma decay rates
Bose-Einstein Correlations of Neutral and Charged Pions in Hadronic Z Decays
Bose-Einstein correlations of both neutral and like-sign charged pion pairs
are measured in a sample of 2 million hadronic Z decays collected with the L3
detector at LEP. The analysis is performed in the four-momentum difference
range 300 MeV < Q < 2 GeV. The radius of the neutral pion source is found to be
smaller than that of charged pions. This result is in qualitative agreement
with the string fragmentation model
Search for Colour Reconnection Effects in e+e- -> W+W- -> hadrons through Particle-Flow Studies at LEP
A search for colour reconnection effects in hadronic decays of W pairs is
performed with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209
GeV. The analysis is based on the study of the particle flow between jets
associated to the same W boson and between two different W bosons in qqqq
events. The ratio of particle yields in the different interjet regions is found
to be sensitive to colour reconnection effects implemented in some
hadronisation models. The data are compared to different models with and
without such effects. An extreme scenario of colour reconnection is ruled out
Anomalous WW-Gamma Vertex in Gamma-p Collision
The potential of LC+HERAp based Gamma-p collider to probe WW-Gamma vertex is
presented through the discussion of sensitivity to anomalous couplings and P_T
distribution of the final quark. The limits of -0.04<\Delta\kappa<0.04 and
-0.11<\lambda<0.11 at 95% C.L. can be reached with integrated luminosity
200(1/pb). The limit for \Delta\kappa is comparable to one which is expected
from LHC. The bounds are also obtained from corresponding ep collider using
Weizsacker-Williams Approximation to compare with real photons.Comment: 8 pages, 2 eps figure
