The frequency of transforming growth factor-TGF-B gene polymorphisms in a normal southern Iranian population

Several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the transforming growth factor-β1 gene (TGFB1) have been reported. Determination of TGFB1 SNPs allele frequencies in different ethnic groups is useful for both population genetic analyses and association studies with immunological diseases. In this study, five SNPs of TGFB1 were determined in 325 individuals from a normal southern Iranian population using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. This population was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for these SNPs. Of the 12 constructed haplotypes, GTCGC and GCTGC were the most frequent in the normal southern Iranian population. Comparison of genotype and allele frequencies of TGFB SNPs between Iranian and other populations (meta-analysis) showed significant differences, and in this case the southern Iranian population seems genetically similar to Caucasoid populations. However, neighbour-joining tree using Nei's genetic distances based on TGF-β1 allele frequencies showed that southern Iranians are genetically far from people from the USA, Germany, UK, Denmark and the Czech Republic. In conclusion, this is the first report of the distribution of TGFB1 SNPs in an Iranian population and the results of this investigation may provide useful information for both population genetic and disease studies. © 2008 The Authors

Observation of EGRET Gamma-Ray Sources by an Extensive Air Shower Experiment

Ultra-high-energy (E>>100 Tev) Extensive Air Showers (EASs) have been monitored for a period of five years (1997 - 2003), using a small array of scintillator detectors in Tehran, Iran. The data have been analyzed to take in to account of the dependence of source counts with respect to the zenith angle. During a calendar year different sources come in the field of view of the detector at varying zenith angles. Because of varying thickness of the overlaying atmosphere, the shower count rate is extremely dependent on zenith angle which have been carefully analyzed over time. High energy gamma-ray sources from EGRET third catalogue where observed and the data were analyzed using an excess method. A number of upper limits for a number of EGRET sources were obtained, including 6 AGNs or probably AGNs and 4 unidentified sources.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics, accepte

On the Importance of Complaint Handling Design : A Multi-Level Analysis of the Impact in Specific Complaint Situations

Given the large investments required for high-quality complaint handling design, managers need practical guidance in understanding its actual importance for their particular company. However, while prior research emphasizes the general relevance of complaint handling design, it fails to provide a more differentiated perspective on this interesting issue. This study, which is based on an integrative multi-level framework and a dyadic dataset, addresses this important gap in research. Results indicate that the impact of a company’s complaint handling design varies significantly depending on the characteristics of the complaining customers with which the firm has to deal. Further, this paper shows that, contingent on these characteristics, a company’s complaint handling design can shape complainants’ fairness perceptions either considerably or only slightly. Overall, findings suggest that companies should apply an adaptive approach to complaint handling to avoid misallocation of attention, energy, and resources

Indications for fistulography and correlation with detection of arteriovenous fistula stenosis

Aims: To identify the indications for fistulograms and determine correlation between indication and radiological findings.\ud \ud Background: Dialysis access stenosis is the most common cause of access dysfunction. Clinical monitoring or vascular access surveillance abnormalities prompt a fistulogram. At our institution, fistulogram is primarily used to confirm stenosis.\ud \ud Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 245 fistulograms performed at our institution over a two year period from January 2012 to December 2013. The indication for referral, fistulogram findings, type of fistula and demographic data were obtained.\ud \ud Results: Total of 75.5% (185 of 245) fistulograms performed confirmed stenosis. The most frequent clinical indication was high venous pressures – 18.4% (45 of 245) and the most common surveillance indication was abnormal access flow (Transonic®) – 17.1% (42 of 245). The average age was 57 years, with 35.9% Aboriginal and 28.2% Torres Straight Islander ethnicity. The most common type of vascular access was radiocephalic fistula (49.8%) followed by brachiocephalic fistula (43.3%). Further analysis of variables, using bivariate logistic regression analysis, failed to reveal any significant correlation between indications for referral and finding of stenosis. However, increased venous pressure tends to be associated with stenosis (Odds ratio 2.0, 95% CI = 0.84–4.7, P = 0.12). Both venous hypertension (Odds ratio 0.10, 95% CI = 0.011–1.0, P = 0.052) and development of collaterals (Odds ratio 0.077, 95% CI = 0.0084–0.70, P = 0.023) were associated with negative fistulograms.\ud \ud Conclusions: At our institution, the majority of fistulograms demonstrated access stenosis, based on established referral indications. Both venous hypertension and development of collaterals as referral indications were associated with less likelihood of finding vascular access stenosis in this cohort

Abstract OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of passive rest (PR) and sports massage with (SMOZO) and without (SM) ozonised oil on sports performance psycho-physiological indices in competitive amateur cyclists after 3 pre-fatiguing Wingate cycle and post-recovery ramp tests. DESIGN: An intra-subjects experimental design with repeated measures. SETTING: Department of Human Anatomy and Physiology, University of Padua. PARTICIPANTS: Fifteen male competitive cyclists (age: 27 \ub1 3.5 years, body weight: 77.6 \ub1 8.3 kg, height: 178 \ub1 7.7 cm) were studied. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Subjects' power output (P), heart rate (HR), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score and blood lactate (BL) clearance in response to PR, SMOZO and SM recoveries were compared. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in cyclists' heart rate patterns in the three experimental conditions (p > 0.05). After SMOZO recovery, athletes showed a higher Pmax (p < 0.05) and a lower perceived fatigue VAS score (p < 0.033) in the ramp test. Blood lactate decreased more at T2 (mid-time point of treatment) and T3 (final time point of treatment) than T1 (beginning of treatment) compared to SM and PR conditions. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that use of ozonised oil during sports massage increases blood lactate removal, improves performance and reduces the perception of fatigue in cyclists from 3 Wingate tests.
