    The development of a route applicable to the preparation of acyclic glutamic acid-based chelating ligands bearing two different auxiliary donor groups linked to the nitrogen atom by methylene spacers is described and applied to the synthesis of the new polydentate ligand HBGl3, the first example of such a structure. The synthesis is accomplished using a strategy employing reductive amination and t-butyl ester protected intermediates. The most basic pKa values for the HBGl3 ligand have been estimated via potentiometric and UV–Visible titration techniques

    Coital frequency and condom use in monogamous and concurrent sexual relationships in Cape Town, South Africa

    Introduction: A decreased frequency of unprotected sex during episodes of concurrent relationships may dramatically reduce the role of concurrency in accelerating the spread of HIV. Such a decrease could be the result of coital dilution - the reduction in per-partner coital frequency from additional partners - and/or increased condom use during concurrency. To study the effect of concurrency on the frequency of unprotected sex, we examined sexual behaviour data from three communities with high HIV prevalence around Cape Town, South Africa. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey from June 2011 to February 2012 using audio computer-assisted self-interviewing to reconstruct one-year sexual histories, with a focus on coital frequency and condom use. Participants were randomly sampled from a previous TB and HIV prevalence survey. Mixed effects logistic and Poisson regression models were fitted to data from 527 sexually active adults reporting on 1210 relationship episodes to evaluate the effect of concurrency status on consistent condom use and coital frequency. Results: The median of the per-partner weekly average coital frequency was 2 (IQR: 1 - 3), and consistent condom use was reported for 36% of the relationship episodes. Neither per-partner coital frequency nor consistent condom use changed significantly during episodes of concurrency (aIRR = 1.05; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.99-1.24 and aOR = 1.01; 95% CI: 0.38-2.68, respectively). Being male, coloured, having a tertiary education, and having a relationship between 2 weeks and 9 months were associated with higher coital frequencies. Being coloured, and having a relationship lasting for more than 9 months, was associated with inconsistent condom use. Conclusions: We found no evidence for coital dilution or for increased condom use during concurrent relationship episodes in three communities around Cape Town with high HIV prevalence. Given the low levels of self- reported consistent condom use, our findings suggest that if the frequency of unprotected sex with each of the sexual partners is sustained during concurrent relationships, HIV-positive individuals with concurrent partners may disproportionately contribute to onward HIV transmission

    Sustainable development by its nature appears elusive. It seems the more we try to capture and pin it down the more it moves away from us leading us into murkier waters and all manner of contradictions. No more is this felt than in the fashion industry where we are presented with a number of oppositions. The fashion cycle renders styles obsolete before they have worn out generating waste and over-consumptive practices. But it can also bring into the fore practices that have resonance to sustainable development in terms of their location, orientation and consideration for the environment. As studies emerge considering the detrimental environmental impacts of the manufacture and consumption of new clothes, second-hand clothes have become a focus for research endeavours considering how they can be reincorporated into the fashion system and have resonance to an ever ‘fashion’ hungry consumer. This chapter discusses methods for the processing of second-hand clothes into fashionable items and, by drawing on the wealth of ‘waste’ materials through reselling, restyling and remanufacturing, argues that ways of re-appropriating them into a more environmentally focused fashion industry is possible and necessary. It sets out as it hypothesis that the global fashion system has value in its transformative powers but that damaging and exploitative forces are still preventing it from being a force for good. This is due to the nature of the items being produced, the way they are manufactured and how they are ultimately consumed and disposed of

    Age-disparity, sexual connectedness and HIV infection in disadvantaged communities around Cape Town, South Africa: a study protocol

    The original publication is available at http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2458/11/616Abstract: Background Crucial connections between sexual network structure and the distribution of HIV remain inadequately understood, especially in regard to the role of concurrency and age disparity in relationships, and how these network characteristics correlate with each other and other risk factors. Social desirability bias and inaccurate recall are obstacles to obtaining valid, detailed information about sexual behaviour and relationship histories. Therefore, this study aims to use novel research methods in order to determine whether HIV status is associated with age-disparity and sexual connectedness as well as establish the primary behavioural and socio-demographic predictors of the egocentric and community sexual network structures. Method/Design We will conduct a cross-sectional survey that uses a questionnaire exploring one-year sexual histories, with a focus on timing and age disparity of relationships, as well as other risk factors such as unprotected intercourse and the use of alcohol and recreational drugs. The questionnaire will be administered in a safe and confidential mobile interview space, using audio computer-assisted self-interview (ACASI) technology on touch screen computers. The ACASI features a choice of languages and visual feedback of temporal information. The survey will be administered in three peri-urban disadvantaged communities in the greater Cape Town area with a high burden of HIV. The study communities participated in a previous TB/HIV study, from which HIV test results will be anonymously linked to the survey dataset. Statistical analyses of the data will include descriptive statistics, linear mixed-effects models for the inter- and intra-subject variability in the age difference between sexual partners, survival analysis for correlated event times to model concurrency patterns, and logistic regression for association of HIV status with age disparity and sexual connectedness. Discussion This study design is intended to facilitate more accurate recall of sensitive sexual history data and has the potential to provide substantial insights into the relationship between key sexual network attributes and additional risk factors for HIV infection.     1/m_Q Corrections to the Bethe-Salpeter Equation for \Lambda_{Q} in the Diquark Picture

    Corrections of order 1/m_Q (Q=b or c) to the Bethe-Salpeter (B-S) equation for \Lambda_Q are analyzed on the assumption that the heavy baryon \Lambda_Q is composed of a heavy quark and a scalar, light diquark. It is found that in addition to the one B-S scalar function in the limit m_Q -> \infty, two more scalar functions are needed at the order 1/m_Q. These can be related to the B-S scalar function in the leading order. The six form factors for the weak transition \Lambda_b -> \Lambda_c are expressed in terms of these wave functions and the results are consistent with heavy quark effective theory to order 1/m_Q. Assuming the kernel for the B-S equation in the limit m_Q -> \infty to consist of a scalar confinement term and a one-gluon-exchange term we obtain numerical solutions for the B-S wave functions, and hence for the Λb→Λc\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c form factors to order 1/m_Q. Predictions are given for the differential and total decay widths for \Lambda_b -> \Lambda_c l \bar{\nu}, and also for the nonleptonic decay widths for \Lambda_b -> \Lambda_c plus a pseudoscalar or vector meson, with QCD corrections being also included.Comment: Latex, 24 pages, two figure

    Determination of V_cb from exclusive decays in a relativistic quark model

    In the framework of a relativistic covariant Bethe-Salpeter model for the quark-antiquark system we present a renewed determination of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}|. Complementing an earlier analysis applied to the whole decay spectrum for B→D∗eÎœB\to D^* e\nu we now also employ the ``zero-recoil method'' that uses the end point of the decay spectrum (ω=1\omega=1) and is suited for heavy-to-heavy transitions. The averaged experimental value extracted from the data at zero recoil, ∣Vcb∣F(ω=1)=0.0343±0.0015|V_{cb}|{\cal F}(\omega=1)=0.0343\pm0.0015, then leads to ∣Vcb∣=0.0360±0.0016|V_{cb}|=0.0360\pm 0.0016. This value is somewhat larger than the one that uses the whole decay spectrum for the model analysis. We also contrast this result to a nonrelativistic model and to recent experiments on the B→DeÎœB\to D e\nu semileptonic decay.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, RevTe

    In situ production of biofunctionalized few-layer defect-free microsheets of graphene

    Biological interfacing of graphene has become crucial to improve its biocompatibility, dispersability, and selectivity. However, biofunctionalization of graphene without yielding defects in its spÂČ-carbon lattice is a major challenge. Here, a process is set out for biofunctionalized defect-free graphene synthesis through the liquid phase ultrasonic exfoliation of raw graphitic material assisted by the self-assembling fungal hydrophobin Vmh2. This protein (extracted from the edible fungus Pleurotus ostreatus) is endowed with peculiar physicochemical properties, exceptional stability, and versatility. The unique properties of Vmh2 and, above all, its superior hydrophobicity, and stability allow to obtain a highly concentrated (≈440-510 ÎŒg mL⁻Âč) and stable exfoliated material (ζ-potential, +40/+70 mV). In addition controlled centrifugation enables the selection of biofunctionalized few-layer defect-free micrographene flakes, as assessed by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electrophoretic mobility. This biofunctionalized product represents a high value added material for the emerging applications of graphene in the biotechnological field such as sensing, nanomedicine, and bioelectronics technologies

    We rehearse the processes of innovation and discovery in general terms, using as our main metaphor the biological concept of an evolutionary fitness landscape. Incremental and disruptive innovations are seen, respectively, as successful searches carried out locally or more widely. They may also be understood as reflecting evolution by mutation (incremental) versus recombination (disruptive). We also bring a platonic view, focusing on virtue and memory. We use ‘virtue’ as a measure of efforts, including the knowledge required to come up with disruptive and incremental innovations, and ‘memory’ as a measure of their lifespan, i.e. how long they are remembered. Fostering innovation, in the evolutionary metaphor, means providing the wherewithal to promote novelty, good objective functions that one is trying to optimize, and means to improve one's knowledge of, and ability to navigate, the landscape one is searching. Recombination necessarily implies multi- or inter-disciplinarity. These principles are generic to all kinds of creativity, novel ideas formation and the development of new products and technologies
