A close look into the carbon disk at the core of the planetary nebula CPD-568032
We present high spatial resolution observations of the dusty core of the
Planetary Nebula with Wolf-Rayet central star CPD-568032. These observations
were taken with the mid-infrared interferometer VLTI/MIDI in imaging mode
providing a typical 300 mas resolution and in interferometric mode using
UT2-UT3 47m baseline providing a typical spatial resolution of 20 mas. The
visible HST images exhibit a complex multilobal geometry dominated by faint
lobes. The farthest structures are located at 7" from the star. The mid-IR
environment of CPD-568032 is dominated by a compact source, barely resolved by
a single UT telescope in a 8.7 micron filter. The infrared core is almost fully
resolved with the three 40-45m projected baselines ranging from -5 to 51 degree
but smooth oscillating fringes at low level have been detected in spectrally
dispersed visibilities. This clear signal is interpreted in terms of a ring
structure which would define the bright inner rim of the equatorial disk.
Geometric models allowed us to derive the main geometrical parameters of the
disk. For instance, a reasonably good fit is reached with an achromatic and
elliptical truncated Gaussian with a radius of 97+/-11 AU, an inclination of
28+/-7 degree and a PA for the major axis at 345+/-7 degree. Furthermore, we
performed some radiative transfer modeling aimed at further constraining the
geometry and mass content of the disk, by taking into account the MIDI
dispersed visibilities, spectra, and the large aperture SED of the source.
These models show that the disk is mostly optically thin in the N band and
highly flared.Comment: Paper accepted in A&
Oxidative Coupling with Zr(IV) Supported by a Noninnocent Anthracene-Based Ligand: Application to the Catalytic Cotrimerization of Alkynes and Nitriles to Pyrimidines
We report the synthesis and reactivity of Zr complexes supported by a 9,10-anthracenediyl-linked bisphenoxide ligand, L. Zr^(IV)LBn_2 (1) undergoes facile photolytic reduction with concomitant formation of bibenzyl and Zr^(IV)L(THF)_3 (2), which displays a two-electron reduced anthracene moiety. Leveraging ligand-stored reducing equivalents, 2 promotes the oxidative coupling of internal and terminal alkynes to isolable zirconacyclopentadiene complexes, demonstrating the reversible utilization of anthracene as a redox reservoir. With diphenylacetylene under CO, cyclopentadienone is formed stoichiometrically. 2 is competent for the catalytic formation of pyrimidines from alkynes and nitriles. Mechanistic studies suggest that selectivity for pyrimidine originates from preferred formation of an azazirconacyclopentadiene intermediate, which reacts preferentially with nitriles over alkynes
Closing the Light Gluino Window in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Models
We study the light gluino scenario giving special attention to constraints
from the masses of the light CP-even neutral Higgs , the lightest chargino
, and the second lightest neutralino , and from
the decay. We find that minimal supergravity, with
a radiatively broken electroweak symmetry group and universality of scalar and
gaugino masses at the unification scale, is incompatible with the existence of
a light gluino.Comment: 12 pages (plain tex), 1 figure not included, VAND-TH-94-7-R. An error

Chargino Production at LEP2 in a Supergravity Model
In the framework of a particular supergravity model which provides a natural
solution to the --problem we show how the discovery of a chargino at LEP2
and the measurement of its mass and production cross--section, together with
the measurement of the mass of the lightest neutralino, would determine the
entire Higgs and SUSY spectrum. We give detailed predictions for the Higgs and
SUSY spectrum as a function of the chargino production cross--section, for
constant values of the lightest chargino and gluino masses.Comment: 11 pages, latex, 4 figures uufile
The Chandra X-ray Survey of Planetary Nebulae (ChanPlaNS): Probing Binarity, Magnetic Fields, and Wind Collisions
We present an overview of the initial results from the Chandra Planetary
Nebula Survey (ChanPlaNS), the first systematic (volume-limited) Chandra X-ray
Observatory survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the solar neighborhood. The
first phase of ChanPlaNS targeted 21 mostly high-excitation PNe within ~1.5 kpc
of Earth, yielding 4 detections of diffuse X-ray emission and 9 detections of
X-ray-luminous point sources at the central stars (CSPNe) of these objects.
Combining these results with those obtained from Chandra archival data for all
(14) other PNe within ~1.5 kpc that have been observed to date, we find an
overall X-ray detection rate of ~70%. Roughly 50% of the PNe observed by
Chandra harbor X-ray-luminous CSPNe, while soft, diffuse X-ray emission tracing
shocks formed by energetic wind collisions is detected in ~30%; five objects
display both diffuse and point-like emission components. The presence of X-ray
sources appears correlated with PN density structure, in that molecule-poor,
elliptical nebulae are more likely to display X-ray emission (either point-like
or diffuse) than molecule-rich, bipolar or Ring-like nebulae. All but one of
the X-ray point sources detected at CSPNe display X-ray spectra that are harder
than expected from hot (~100 kK) central star photospheres, possibly indicating
a high frequency of binary companions to CSPNe. Other potential explanations
include self-shocking winds or PN mass fallback. Most PNe detected as diffuse
X-ray sources are elliptical nebulae that display a nested shell/halo structure
and bright ansae; the diffuse X-ray emission regions are confined within inner,
sharp-rimmed shells. All sample PNe that display diffuse X-ray emission have
inner shell dynamical ages <~5x10^3 yr, placing firm constraints on the
timescale for strong shocks due to wind interactions in PNe.Comment: 41 pages, 6 figures; submitted to the Astronomical Journa
The CHilean Automatic Supernova sEarch (CHASE)
The CHASE project started in 2007 with the aim of providing young southern
supernovae (SNe) to the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP) and Millennium Center
for Supernova Studies (MCSS) follow-up programs. So far CHASE has discovered 33
SNe with an average of more than 2.5 SNe per month in 2008. In addition to the
search we are carrying out a follow-up program targeting bright SNe. Our fully
automated data reduction allows us to follow the evolution on the light curve
in real time, triggering further observations if something potentially
interesting is detectedComment: 4 pages, 2 figures, conference proceedin
Orbifolds and Flows from Gauged Supergravity
We examine orbifolds of the IIB string via gauged supergravity. For the
gravity duals of the A_{n-1} quiver gauge theories, we extract the massless
degrees of freedom and assemble them into multiplets of N=4 gauged supergravity
in five dimensions. We examine the embedding of the gauge group into the
isometry group of the scalar manifold, as well as the symmetries of the scalar
potential. From this we find that there is a large SU(1,n) symmetry group which
relates different RG flows in the dual quiver gauge theory. We find that this
symmetry implies an extension of the usual duality between ten-dimensional IIB
solutions which involves exchanging geometric moduli with background fluxes.Comment: 37 pages, harvma
Catching up with Method and Process Practice: An Industry-Informed Baseline for Researchers
Software development methods are usually not applied by the book.companies are under pressure to continuously deploy software products that meet market needs and stakeholders\u27 requests. To implement efficient and effective development processes, companies utilize multiple frameworks, methods and practices, and combine these into hybrid methods. A common combination contains a rich management framework to organize and steer projects complemented with a number of smaller practices providing the development teams with tools to complete their tasks. In this paper, based on 732 data points collected through an international survey, we study the software development process use in practice. Our results show that 76.8% of the companies implement hybrid methods.company size as well as the strategy in devising and evolving hybrid methods affect the suitability of the chosen process to reach company or project goals. Our findings show that companies that combine planned improvement programs with process evolution can increase their process\u27 suitability by up to 5%
Mass calibration and Relative Humidity compensation requirements for optical portable particulate matter monitors : the IMPASHS (Impact of smoke-free policies in EU Member States) WP2 preliminary results
Better knowledge of particulate matter (PM) concentrations needs portable, reliable, user friendly, low cost, real time mass analyzers of PM2.5 and PM10.
Optical Particle Counters (OPC) measuring mass have manufacturer calibration specific gravity “K” factor referred to polystyrene latex particles which are completely different than those of the real world, therefore they require specific calibrations. Measurements are also subject to Relative Humidity (RH) heavy interference.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
