Photoluminescence and charge transfer in the prototypical 2D/3D semiconductor heterostructure MoS2/GaAs
The new generation of two-dimensional (2D) materials has shown a broad range
of applications for optical and electronic devices. Understanding the
properties of these materials when integrated with the more traditional
three-dimensional (3D) semiconductors is an important challenge for the
implementation of ultra-thin electronic devices. Recent observations have shown
that by combining MoS with GaAs it is possible to develop high quality
photodetectors and solar cells. Here, we present a study of the effects of
intrinsic GaAs, p-doped GaAs, and n-doped GaAs substrates on the
photoluminescence of monolayer MoS. We observe a decrease of an order of
magnitude in the emission intensity of MoS in all MoS/GaAs
heterojunctions, when compared to a control sample consisting of a MoS
monolayer isolated from GaAs by a few layers of hexagonal boron nitride. We
also see a dependence of the trion to A-exciton emission ratio in the
photoluminescence spectra on the type of substrate, a dependence that we relate
to the static charge exchange between MoS and the substrates when the
junction is formed. Scanning Kelvin probe microscopy measurements of the
heterojunctions suggest type-I band alignments, so that excitons generated on
the MoS monolayer will be transferred to the GaAs substrate. Our results
shed light on the charge exchange leading to band offsets in 2D/3D
heterojunctions which play a central role in the understanding and further
improvement of electronic devices.Comment: Accepted in Applied Physics Letter

All Roads Lead to Rome: Results of Non-Invasive Respiratory Therapies Applied in a Tertiary-Care Hospital Without an Intermediate Care Unit During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Combining literature-based and data-driven fuzzy models to predict brown trout (salmo trutta l.) spawning habitat degradation induced by climate change
[EN] A fuzzy rule-based system combining empirical data on hydraulic preferences and literature information on temperature requirements was used to foresee the brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) spawning habitat degradation induced by climate change. The climatic scenarios for the Cabriel River (Eastern Iberian Peninsula) corresponded to two Representative Concentration Pathways (4.5 and 8.5) for the short (2011¿2040) and mid (2041¿2070) term horizons. The hydraulic and hydrologic modelling were undertaken with process-based numerical models (i.e., River2D© and HBV-light) while the water temperature was modelled by assembling the predictions of three machine learning techniques (M5, Multi-Adaptive Regression Splines and Support Vector Regression). The predicted rise in the water temperature will not be compensated by the more benign lower flows. Consequently, the suitable spawning habitat will be reduced between 15.4¿48.7%. The entire population shall suffer the effects of climate change and will probably be extirpated from the downstream segments of the river. The study has been partially funded by the IMPADAPT project (CGL2013-48424-C2-1-R) with Spanish MINECO (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad) and FEDER funds and by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar (Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment). Hyperdominance in Amazonian Forest Carbon Cycling
While Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, the abundance of trees is skewed strongly towards relatively few ‘hyperdominant’ species. In addition to their diversity, Amazonian trees are a key component of the global carbon cycle, assimilating and storing more carbon than any other ecosystem on Earth. Here we ask, using a unique data set of 530 forest plots, if the functions of storing and producing woody carbon are concentrated in a small number of tree species, whether the most abundant species also dominate carbon cycling, and whether dominant species are characterized by specific functional traits. We find that dominance of forest function is even more concentrated in a few species than is dominance of tree abundance, with only ≈1% of Amazon tree species responsible for 50% of carbon storage and productivity. Although those species that contribute most to biomass and productivity are often abundant, species maximum size is also influential, while the identity and ranking of dominant species varies by function and by region

Employment generation by small firms in Spain
Despite the relevance in terms of policy, we still know little in Spain about where and by whom jobs are created, and how that is affecting the size distribution of firms. The main innovation of this paper is to use a rich database that overcomes the problems encountered by other firm-level studies to shed some light on the employment generation of small firms in Spain. We find that small firms contribute to employment disproportionately across all sectors of the economy although the difference between their employment and job creation share is largest in the manufacturing sector. The job creators in that sector are both new and established firms whereas only new small firms outperform their larger counterparts in the service sector. The large annual job creation of the small firm size class is shifting the firm size distribution towards the very small production units, although not uniformly across industries of different technology intensit
