Students in grades 7-10 analyze land cover change in order to help them grasp the extent, significance, and consequences of land cover change; and to introduce them to the perspective of space-based observations. Educational levels: High school, Middle school

Technology Teacher: Navigating by Good Gyrations

    Get PDF
This activity describes some simple, yet impressive gyroscopic demonstrations using only a bike wheel with a quick-release hub. Then, itIt explains both the angular momentum principle that tends to keep the wheel in a rigid plane and the effects of the external forces that create precession. And all without a single equation! No equations are used during the activity. Understanding the forces at work on a gyroscope will raise your students' consciousness of all kinds of devices and phenomena, from how and why a football, a rifle, and a Frisbee disk work to how an aircraft or a spacecraft can keep itself on course. This activity introduces gravitational waves and the NASA technology being developed to detect them in space. It involves building a metaphorical interferometer that demonstrates how the mission (and all interferometry) works. Educational levels: Middle school, High school

Safe discontinuation of nilotinib in a patient with chronic myeloid leukemia: a case report

Case presentation. We report the case of a 64-year-old Caucasian man diagnosed with chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia in April 2005. After 4 years of treatment with imatinib, he became intolerant to the drug and was switched to nilotinib. Two years later, he decided to stop nilotinib. Undetectable molecular response persisted for 30 months after discontinuation of the drug. Introduction. Although there is a considerable amount of data in the literature on safe discontinuation of first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, little is known about discontinuation of second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy. Most previous studies have been focused on dasatinib, and the few cases of nilotinib withdrawal that have been reported had a median follow-up of 12 months. To the best of our knowledge, the present report is the first to describe nilotinib withdrawal with 30 months of follow-up. Conclusion: Our present case suggests that nilotinib withdrawal is safe for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia who achieve a stable undetectable molecular response. Our patient was homozygous for killer immunoglobulin-like receptor haplotype A, previously reported to be a promising immunogenetic marker for undetectable molecular response. We recommend additional studies to investigate patient immunogenetic profiles and their potential role in complete response to therap

Empirical Study of Car License Plates Recognition

The number of vehicles on the road has increased drastically in recent years. The license plate is an identity card for a vehicle. It can map to the owner and further information about vehicle. License plate information is useful to help traffic management systems. For example, traffic management systems can check for vehicles moving at speeds not permitted by law and can also be installed in parking areas to se-cure the entrance or exit way for vehicles. License plate recognition algorithms have been proposed by many researchers. License plate recognition requires license plate detection, segmentation, and charac-ters recognition. The algorithm detects the position of a license plate and extracts the characters. Various license plate recognition algorithms have been implemented, and each algorithm has its strengths and weaknesses. In this research, I implement three algorithms for detecting license plates, three algorithms for segmenting license plates, and two algorithms for recognizing license plate characters. I evaluate each of these algorithms on the same two datasets, one from Greece and one from Thailand. For detecting li-cense plates, the best result is obtained by a Haar cascade algorithm. After the best result of license plate detection is obtained, for the segmentation part a Laplacian based method has the highest accuracy. Last, the license plate recognition experiment shows that a neural network has better accuracy than other algo-rithm. I summarize and analyze the overall performance of each method for comparison

PEMANFAATAN BIND9 DALAM PEMBUATAN DOMAIN PADA VIRTUAL HOST MENGGUNAKANLINUX

    Get PDF
