Characterization of elderly and non-elderly patients with Bronchial Asthma: assessment of aspects of quality of life
Introduction: Quality of life in elderly asthmatics seems to be lower, on the one hand, than that in younger asthmatics, due to a lower degree of disease control and the presence of co-morbidities and, on the other hand, than that in elderly non asthmatics. However, there are very few studies on quality of life in elderly asthmatics. The objectives of this study were to assess quality of life of elderly asthmatics and to determine factors that might influence it.
Methods: The sample included individuals aged 18 and older, elderly and non-elderly adults, with a confirmed diagnosis of Bronchial Asthma, followed up at hospital outpatient clinics, and individuals aged 18 and older, elderly and non-elderly adults without any symptoms or diagnoses of respiratory disease, followed up at Healthcare Centre outpatient clinics. After giving written informed consent, volunteers replied to some questionnaires: the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), the Center for Epidemiologic Self-Report Depression Scale (CES-D), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMES), the Asthma Control Test (ACT), the Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test (CARAT), the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ), the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), the Short Form (SF-36) Health Survey and the EQ-5D-5L Instrument. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 22.0®, and a p-value less than or equal to 0.05 was regarded as significant for all statistical tests.
Results: Three hundred and ninety two volunteers, including ninety two elderly asthmatic patients, with a mean age of 72.9 years were studied. Most elderly patients were female, smokers, with low level of schooling and social class and retired from the textile/wool industry. Elderly patients with atopic and long standing asthma predominated, with a family history of respiratory disease, showing a low degree of asthma symptom control. Most patients had errors in their inhalational technique. General quality of life was relatively high but lower than that of elderly non-asthmatics. Asthma-specific quality of life was also relatively high, but lower than that of non-elderly asthmatic patients and it was influenced by the degree of asthma control, as well as by the presence of heart failure and diabetes mellitus, but not by rhinitis or gastroesophageal reflux disease, in contrast with non-elderly asthmatic patients.
Conclusion: General and asthma-specific quality of life in elderly asthmatics is relatively high, but lower when compared with elderly non-asthmatics volunteers and non-elderly asthmatic patients, respectively. Generic and asthma-specific health-related QoL differentially capture the impact of symptom control and comorbidity in asthma. Asthma-specific quality of life in the elderly is directly related to the degree of asthma control, and it is influenced by cardiovascular and metabolic co-morbidities. There should be a higher focus on the optimization of self-education and treatment of both BA and relevant co-morbidities in these patients.
Intelligent IoT and Dynamic Network Semantic Maps for more Trustworthy Systems
As technology evolves, the Internet of Things (IoT) concept is gaining importance for constituting a foundation to reach optimum connectivity between people and things. For this to happen and to allow easier integration of sensors and other devices in these technologic environments (or networks), the configuration is a key process, promoting interoperability between heterogeneous devices and providing strategies and processes to enhance the network capabilities. The optimization of this important process of creating a truly dynamic network must be based on models that provide a standardization of communication patterns, protocols and technologies between the sensors. Despite standing as a major tendency today, many obstacles still arise when implementing an intelligent dynamic network. Existing models are not as widely adopted as expected and semantics are often not properly represented, hence resulting in complex and unsuitable configuration time. Thus, this work aims to understand the ideal models and ontologies to achieve proper architectures and semantic maps, which allow management and redundancy based on the information of the whole network, without compromising performance, and to develop a competent configuration of sensors to integrate in a contemporary industrial typical dynamic network
Comparing exchange market pressure in West and Southern African countries
We compare the performance of Cape Verde and Mozambique concerning financial credibility as measured by Exchange Market Pressure, an institutional feature that has often been overlooked in the literature as a relevant institution for economies. Drawing on previous research by Macedo et al. (2009), we expand their analysis and, using several definitions of “financial credibility”, all related to different angles on Exchange Market Pressure indices, we conclude that - against reasonable benchmarks in their respective regions - financial credibility has been very good for Cape Verde and fairly good for Mozambique.NBER, Center for Globalization and Governance at FEUN
Submarine canyons are complex and heterogeneous geomorphologic
structures highly relevant for the biodiversity and productivity of continental
margins. These marine ecosystems play a key role providing invaluable goods
and services for human well-being but are also increasingly subjected to the
effects of anthropogenic pressure and climate change. The natural isolation of
canyons may act synergistically with these changes with implications for
population connectivity and the maintenance of biodiversity. The understanding
of the causes and ecological consequences of such changes requires holistic
and interdisciplinary approaches.
I mapped the landscape of submarine canyon research based on a
comprehensive bibliographic data set and using data mining techniques and
network analysis. The existing knowledge clusters, historical trends, emergent
topics and knowledge gaps in canyon research were identified and
characterized. Topics such as “Geology & Geophysics”, “Oceanographic
Processes” and “Biology & Ecology” were among the most studied while, for
instance, “Biogeochemistry” and ecological modelling were among the less
explored. Topics regarding anthropogenic impacts and climate-driven
processes were only detected on publication of the last decade. The
knowledge network reflects a latent interdisciplinarity in canyon research that
developed mostly in the new millennium, supported by a well implemented and
international collaboration network. The research efforts have been mainly
directed towards only a few canyon systems and a thematic bias was identified,
with specific topics addressed preferentially in particular canyons. This spatial
and thematic bias, together with the paucity of truly inter-disciplinary studies,
may be the most important limitation to the integrated knowledge and
development of canyon research and hinders a global, more comprehensive
understanding of canyon patterns and processes. The scientific landscape
mapping and the complementary results are made available online as an open
and interactive platform.
In order to assess the importance of submarine canyons for the conservation
and management on the deep sea, a study area and a modelling species were
selected: the Mediterranean Sea and Lophelia pertusa, a cold-water coral
species. The Mediterranean Sea encompasses several submarine canyon
systems and L. pertusa is an ecosystem engineering species that occurs
frequently in these geomorphological features and provides refuge, nursery
grounds and physical support for a remarkable diversity of other life forms.
Considering that the distribution of L. pertusa in the Mediterranean Sea is
probably underestimated and that this information is crucial to assess the
relevance of canyons in the Mediterranean seascape, I estimated the habitat
suitability and draw uncertainty maps for this region based on environmental
predictors and an ensemble approach of three machine-learning algorithms.
The results suggest that in the Mediterranean Sea, L. pertusa encounters
environmental settings close to its physiological limits but, despite the highly
variable quality of the seascape, submarine canyons were identified as high
suitability areas, especially across the Western and Central Mediterranean
margins. In addition to the environmental suitability, the ecosystem connectivity
determines the species distribution, the metapopulation dynamics and
population resilience. I simulated the transport of L. pertusa larvae in the
Mediterranean Sea using a biophysical model to estimate their potential
dispersal as well as a network analysis to evaluate the habitat availability
based on parameters such as suitability, spatial configuration of the seascape
and the oceanographic conditions variability. The results suggest that
connectivity among Mediterranean ecoregions is weak and that the
intensification of climate-driven events (e.g., dense shelf water cascading) may
worsen this scenario. However, the potential exchange of larvae between
colonies within the same ecoregion was significant, favoring population
resilience to local disturbances. Habitat areas with high quality and larval flux
were identified as a priority for the conservation of L. pertusa, and
subsequently also for their associated fauna. Once again, I showed that habitat
areas on submarine canyons may play an important role in the connectivity of
L. pertusa Mediterranean populations. However, these habitat areas are
subjected to intense anthropogenic pressures, which allied to the effects of
climate change, may impose greater challenges to their conservation. Apart
from three French marine protected areas in the Gulf of Lion, the development
of conservation efforts considering submarine canyon in the Mediterranean
Sea is negligible.
The knowledge produced in this thesis provides scientific evidence to support
decision-making in conservation and planning of marine protected areas
networks in the Mediterranean Sea and illustrates the relevance of submarine
canyon for the management and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity.
biodiversidade associada.
respeito a áreas associadas à “Geologia e Geofísica”, “Processos
Estudos referentes a impactos antropogénicos nestes ecossistemas e
No entanto, a investigação científica
submarinos, principalmente no Mediterrâneo Ocidental e Central.
No entanto,
locais.
Neste sentido,

Temperature Field Of Concrete-filled Steel Tubular Columns In Fire
The composite structures formed by the association of steel profiles with concrete have shown to be an advantageous alternative, improving the behavior of the steel structures concerning their load capacity, stiffness, and durability, under fire conditions. The concrete-filled tubular columns have become an attractive alternative for the civil construction area, offering constructive and esthetic advantages. The Eurocode 4 (EN 1994-1-2, 2002) and ABNT NBR 14323:2013 show simple methods for the design of the composite columns under fire situations. Nevertheless, these present limitations in their application. In addition, regarding the determination of the temperature field in the cross section, the Eurocode 4 (EN 1994-1-2, 2002) describes a specific procedure for columns with section profile covered with concrete, but it is neglectful about concrete-filled tubular columns. The goal of this paper is to present a simplified procedure to determine the temperature registered in concrete-filled steel columns and apply the procedure to columns with square section tubes. The temperature distribution was determined by simulations using the computer package ABAQUS (Dessault Systemes Simulia Corp. 2013). After the studies, it has been considered that the procedure described in this paper is an effective alternative for the determination of the field's temperature and for the application of the design of the concrete-filled columns under fire conditions.70213714
Regressões múltiplas demonstraram o papel preditivo do
Abstract This Applied Research Working with the theme "GNR in combat to Road
Casualties, Education or Enforcement?” aims to clarify the role of National Republican Guard in the fight against road casualties, as well as to clarify this role as monitoring
enforcement and education skills.
In development the present study hypotheses and research questions subordinate to
the central question: "What is the role of GNR in the fight against road casualties?" were formulated.
This study began with an exhaustive literature research, which was used to carry
out the practical part in which the operating performance of detachments and the opinion of their commanders by conducting questionnaires, throughout the country, were statistically compared. These statistical results were finally clarified and compared by
conducting interviews to Senior Officers of GNR with a high degree of expertise in traffic.
After the data analysis performed concludes that, GNR has not only a role in the
Enforcement / inspection, but also possess an important role in education. It was found that GNR makes part of a set of entities with responsibility in road safety, and which can and must act in both areas, because it has the knowledge and legal means for that. We also conclude that the road safety education is a key area in the fight against road casualties, and also is an underexplored area in Portugal. GNR is able to intercede in this area, through the actions and campaigns developed by its operational componente
