Facial expression recognition using deep learning - convolutional neural network

    Get PDF
Facial expression recognition has been an active research area in the past ten years, with growing application areas such avatar animation, neuromarketing and sociable robots. The recognition of facial expressions is not an easy problem for machine learning methods, since people can vary signi cantly in the way that they show their expressions. Even images of the same person in one expression can vary in brightness, background and position. Hence, facial expression recognition is still a challenging problem. To address these problems, in this work we propose a facial expression recognition system that uses Convolutional Neural Networks. Data augmentation and di erent preprocessing steps were studied together with various Convolutional Neural Networks architectures. The data augmentation and pre-processing steps were used to help the network on the feature selection. Experiments were carried out with three largely used databases (Cohn-Kanade, JAFFE, and BU3DFE) and cross-database validations (i.e. training in one database and test in another) were also performed. The proposed approach has shown to be very e ective, improving the state-of-the-art results in the literature and allowing real time facial expression recognition with standard PC computers.CAPE

UIDB/04666/2020 UIDP/04666/2020The Ria de Aveiro F site was discovered during preventive archaeological works carried out in the scope of the 2002 expansion of Aveiro’s harbour into the Ria de Aveiro, a lagoon system located in northern Portugal which played a great role in the salt trade of the Early Modern period. Despite the global destruction of the context caused by the dredging works, several well preserved structural elements were recovered. They belonged to two ships, a carvel-built one and a clinker-built one. The former features several construction characteristics that are common in the Mediterranean. The latter possibly corresponds to a small support boat. Beside the structural findings, several rigging elements wooden and rope artifacts, some pottery shards, ballast stones and a limestone cannonball were also recovered. The global study of the findings allowed to assign these remains to a chronology around the first half of the 16th century. Wood identification analysis were recently carried out; the results indicate the use of tropical, South American species in the construction of the clinker-built vessel. This data allows us to suggest that this site may belong to an initial phase of the relationship between the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula.publishersversionpublishe

Symbolic Computation of Variational Symmetries in Optimal Control

We use a computer algebra system to compute, in an efficient way, optimal control variational symmetries up to a gauge term. The symmetries are then used to obtain families of Noether's first integrals, possibly in the presence of nonconservative external forces. As an application, we obtain eight independent first integrals for the sub-Riemannian nilpotent problem (2,3,5,8).Comment: Presented at the 4th Junior European Meeting on "Control and Optimization", Bialystok Technical University, Bialystok, Poland, 11-14 September 2005. Context-aware task scheduling slgorithm for the Fog paradigm: a model proposal

    Get PDF
FMEC 2022. 7ª Conferência Internacional sobre "Fog e Mobile Edge Computing", realizada em Paris, França, de 12-15 de dezembro de 2022.Task scheduling in fog paradigm is very complex and, in the literature, according to the author’s knowledge there are still few studies. In the cloud architecture, it is widely studied, and, in much research, it is approached from the perspective of service providers. Trying to bring innovative contributions in these areas, in this paper, we propose a solution to the context-aware task-scheduling problem for fog paradigm. In our proposal, different context parameters are normalized through Min-Max normalization, requisition priorities are defined through the application of the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) technique and scheduling is performed using Multi-Objective Non-Linear Programming Optimization (MONLIP) technique. The results obtained from simulations in the iFogSim toolkit, show that our proposal performs better compared to the non-context-aware proposals.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

The gill transcriptome of threatened European freshwater mussels

    Get PDF
Genomic tools applied to non-model organisms are critical to design successful conservation strategies of particularly threatened groups. Freshwater mussels of the Unionida order are among the most vulnerable taxa and yet almost no genetic resources are available. Here, we present the gill transcriptomes of five European freshwater mussels with high conservation concern: Margaritifera margaritifera, Unio crassus, Unio pictorum, Unio mancus and Unio delphinus. The final assemblies, with N50 values ranging from 1069–1895 bp and total BUSCO scores above 90% (Eukaryote and Metazoan databases), were structurally and functionally annotated, and made available. The transcriptomes here produced represent a valuable resource for future studies on these species’ biology and ultimately guide their conservation.AGS was funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the grant SFRH/ BD/137935/2018, that also supported MLL (2020.03608.CEECIND) and EF (CEECIND/00627/2017). This research was developed under the project EdgeOmics - Freshwater Bivalves at the edge: Adaptation genomics under climate-change scenarios (PTDC/CTA-AMB/3065/2020) funded by FCT through national funds.
