    Paediatricians, social media and blogs: Ethical considerations

    The use of blogs, Facebook and similar social networking sites is rapidly expanding and, when compared with e-mail, may be having a significantly different impact on the traditional doctor-patient relationship. Characteristics specific to these online platforms have major implications for professional relationships, including the ‘Facebook effect’ (the relative permanence of postings) and the ‘online disinhibition effect’. The present practice point illustrates relevant ethical considerations and provides guidance to paediatricians and others concerning the prudent professional and personal use of social networking media. L’utilisation des blogues, de Facebook et de sites de réseautage social similaires prend une expansion rapide. Par rapport aux courriels, les réseaux sociaux peuvent avoir des répercussions très différentes sur la relation classique entre le médecin et son patient. Les caractéristiques propres à ces plateformes virtuelles ont des conséquences considérables sur les relations professionnelles, y compris « l’effet Facebook » (la permanence relative des textes affichés) et « l’effet de désinhibition virtuelle ».     A multichannel wireless sEMG sensor endowing a 0.13 μm CMOS mixed-signal SoC

    This paper presents a wireless multichannel surface electromyography (sEMG) sensor which features a custom 0.13μm CMOS mixed-signal system-on-chip (SoC) analog frontend circuit. The proposed sensor includes 10 sEMG recording channels with tunable bandwidth (BW) and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) resolution. The SoC includes 10x bioamplifiers, 10x 3 rd order ΔΣ MASH 1-1-1 ADC, and 10x on-chip decimation filters (DF). This SoC provides the sEMG samples data through a serial peripheral interface (SPI) bus to a microcontroller unit (MCU) that then transfers the data to a wireless transceiver. We report sEMG waveforms acquired using a custom multichannel electrode module, and a comparison with a commercial grade system. Results show that the proposed integrated wireless SoC-based system compares well with the commercial grade sEMG recording system. The sensor has an input-referred noise of 2.5 μVrms (BW of 10-500 Hz), an input-dynamic range of 6 mVpp, a programmable sampling rate of 2 ksps, for sEMG, while consuming only 7.1 μW/Ch for the SoC (w/ ADC & DF) and 21.8 mW of power for the sensor (Transceiver, MCU, etc.).     The Multicolored Asian Ladybird, Harmonia axyridis, is an extremely successful invasive species. Here we suggest that, in addition to many other traits, the dorsal spines of its larvae contribute to their success, as suggested by behavioral observations of agonistic interactions between H. axyridis and European coccinellids. In coccinellids, the role of dorsal spines in these interactions has been poorly studied and they could be a physical protection against intraguild predators. Dorsal spines of second instar H. axyridis larvae were removed with micro-scissors, which resulted in spineless larvae after molting (spineless group). These larvae were then exposed to starved Coccinella septempunctata larvae. Two control categories were also submitted to interactions: H. axyridis larvae with all their spines (control group) and with their spines, but injured by pin stings (injured group). Spine removal at the second instar did not hamper H. axyridis development. The bite rate by C. septempunctata was significantly higher on the spineless H. axyridis and more dorsally located compared to the control and injured groups, while no bite rate difference was observed between the injured and the control group. Our results suggest that in addition to behavioral and chemical defenses, the dorsal spines play a significant protective role against bites. Therefore, spines in ladybirds could be considered as a morphological defense against intraguild predation. In H. axyridis, these defenses might contribute to its success in food resources already exploited by other guild members and thus further facilitate the invasion of new areas.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    The role of the melanoma gene MC1R in Parkinson disease and REM sleep behavior disorder

    The MC1R gene, suggested to be involved in Parkinson disease (PD) and melanoma, was sequenced in PD patients (n=539) and controls (n=265) from New-York, and PD patients (n=551), rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) patients (n=351) and controls (n=956) of European ancestry. Sixty-eight MC1R variants were identified, including 7 common variants with frequency>0.01. None of the common variants was associated with PD or RBD in the different regression models. In a meta-analysis with fixed-effect model, the p.R160W variant was associated with an increased risk for PD (OR=1.22, 95%CI 1.02-1.47, p=0.03) but with significant heterogeneity (p=0.048). Removing one study that introduced the heterogeneity resulted in nonsignificant association (OR=1.11, 95%CI 0.92-1.35, p=0.27, heterogeneity p=0.57). Rare variants had similar frequencies in patients and controls (10.54% and 10.15%, respectively, p=0.75), and no cumulative effect of carrying more than one MC1R variant was found.     CT Characteristics of Pheochromocytoma: Relevance for the Evaluation of Adrenal Incidentaloma.

    BACKGROUND: Up to 7% of all adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) are pheochromocytomas (PCCs). In the evaluation of AI, it is generally recommended that PCC be excluded by measurement of plasma-free or 24-hour urinary fractionated metanephrines. However, recent studies suggest that biochemical exclusion of PCC not be performed for lesions with CT characteristics of an adrenocortical adenoma (ACA). AIM: To determine the proportion of PCCs with ACA-like attenuation or contrast washout on CT. METHODS: For this multicenter retrospective study, two central investigators independently analyzed the CT reports of 533 patients with 548 histologically confirmed PCCs. Data on tumor size, unenhanced Hounsfield units (HU), absolute percentage washout (APW), and relative percentage washout (RPW) were collected in addition to clinical parameters. RESULTS: Among the 376 PCCs for which unenhanced attenuation data were available, 374 had an attenuation of >10 HU (99.5%). In the two exceptions (0.5%), unenhanced attenuation was exactly 10 HU, which lies just within the range of ≤10 HU that would suggest a diagnosis of ACA. Of 76 PCCs with unenhanced HU > 10 and available washout data, 22 (28.9%) had a high APW and/or RPW, suggestive of ACA. CONCLUSION: Based on the lack of PCCs with an unenhanced attenuation of <10 HU and the low proportion (0.5%) of PCCs with an attenuation of 10 HU, it seems reasonable to abstain from biochemical testing for PCC in AIs with an unenhanced attenuation of ≤10 HU. The assessment of contrast washout, however, is unreliable for ruling out PCC

    Globally invariant metabolism but density-diversity mismatch in springtails.

    Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning

    Global fine-resolution data on springtail abundance and community structure

    Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.</p
