65 Cybele in the thermal infrared: Multiple observations and thermophysical analysis
We investigated the physical and thermal properties of 65 Cybele}, one of the
largest main-belt asteroids. Based on published and recently obtained thermal
infrared observations, including ISO measurements, we derived through
thermophysical modelling (TPM) a size of 302x290x232 km (+/- 4 %) and an
geometric visible albedo of 0.050+/-0.005. Our model of a regolith covered
surface with low thermal inertia and "default" roughness describes the
wavelengths and phase angle dependent thermal aspects very well. Before/after
opposition effect and beaming behaviour can be explained in that way. We found
a constant emissivity of 0.9 at wavelengths up to about 100 micron and lower
values towards the submillimetre range, indicating a grain size distribution
dominated by 200 micron particle sizes. The spectroscopic analysis revealed an
emissivity increase between 8.0 and 9.5 micron. We compared this emissivity
behaviour with the Christiansen features of carbonaceous chondrite meteorites,
but a conclusive identification was not possible. A comparison between the
Standard Thermal Model (STM) and the applied TPM clearly demonstrates the
limitations and problems of the STM for the analysis of multi-epoch and
-wavelengths observations. While the TPM produced a unique diameter/albedo
solution, the calculated STM values varied by +/-30 % and showed clear trends
with wavelength and phase angle. Cybele can be considered as a nice textbook
case for the thermophysical analysis of combined optical and thermal infrared

Physical properties of ESA Rosetta target asteroid (21) Lutetia: Shape and flyby geometry
Aims. We determine the physical properties (spin state and shape) of asteroid
(21) Lutetia, target of the ESA Rosetta mission, to help in preparing for
observations during the flyby on 2010 July 10 by predicting the orientation of
Lutetia as seen from Rosetta.
Methods. We use our novel KOALA inversion algorithm to determine the physical
properties of asteroids from a combination of optical lightcurves,
disk-resolved images, and stellar occultations, although the latter are not
available for (21) Lutetia.
Results. We find the spin axis of (21) Lutetia to lie within 5 degrees of
({\lambda} = 52 deg., {\beta} = -6 deg.) in Ecliptic J2000 reference frame
(equatorial {\alpha} = 52 deg., {\delta} = +12 deg.), and determine an improved
sidereal period of 8.168 270 \pm 0.000 001 h. This pole solution implies the
southern hemisphere of Lutetia will be in "seasonal" shadow at the time of the
flyby. The apparent cross-section of Lutetia is triangular as seen "pole-on"
and more rectangular as seen "equator-on". The best-fit model suggests the
presence of several concavities. The largest of these is close to the north

A framework to assess the resilience of farming systems
Agricultural systems in Europe face accumulating economic, ecological and societal challenges, raising concerns
about their resilience to shocks and stresses. These resilience issues need to be addressed with a focus on the
regional context in which farming systems operate because farms, farmers’ organizations, service suppliers and
supply chain actors are embedded in local environments and functions of agriculture. We define resilience of a farming
system as its ability to ensure the provision of the system functions in the face of increasingly complex and
accumulating economic, social, environmental and institutional shocks and stresses, through capacities of robustness,
adaptability and transformability. We (i) develop a framework to assess the resilience of farming systems, and (ii)
present a methodology to operationalize the framework with a view to Europe’s diverse farming systems. The
framework is designed to assess resilience to specific challenges (specified resilience) as well as a farming system’s
capacity to deal with the unknown, uncertainty and surprise (general resilience). The framework provides a heuristic to
analyze system properties, challenges (shocks, long-term stresses), indicators to measure the performance of system
functions, resilience capacities and resilience-enhancing attributes. Capacities and attributes refer to adaptive cycle
processes of agricultural practices, farm demographics, governance and risk management. The novelty of the
framework pertains to the focal scale of analysis, i.e. the farming system level, the consideration of accumulating
challenges and various agricultural processes, and the consideration that farming systems provide multiple functions
that can change over time. Furthermore, the distinction between three resilience capacities (robustness, adaptability,
transformability) ensures that the framework goes beyond narrow definitions that limit resilience to robustness. The
methodology deploys a mixed-methods approach: quantitative methods, such as statistics, econometrics and
modelling, are used to identify underlying patterns, causal explanations and likely contributing factors; while qualitative
methods, such as interviews, participatory approaches and stakeholder workshops, access experiential and contextual
knowledge and provide more nuanced insights. More specifically, analysis along the framework explores multiple
nested levels of farming systems (e.g. farm, farm household, supply chain, farming system) over a time horizon of 1-2
generations, thereby enabling reflection on potential temporal and scalar trade-offs across resilience attributes. The
richness of the framework is illustrated for the arable farming system in Veenkoloniën, the Netherlands. The analysis
reveals a relatively low capacity of this farming system to transform and farmers feeling distressed about
transformation, while other members of their households have experienced many examples of transformation
Designing authoritarian deliberation: how social media platforms influence political talk in China
Discussion is often celebrated as a critical element of public opinion and political participation. Recently, scholars have suggested that the design and features of specific online platforms shape what is politically expressed online and how. Building on these findings and drawing on 112 semi-structured qualitative interviews with information technology experts and internet users, we explain how major Chinese social media platforms differ in structure and motivation. Drawing upon a nationwide representative survey and an online experiment, we find that platforms aiming to make users a source of information through public, information-centred communication, such as the Twitter-like Weibo, are more conducive to political expression; while platforms built to optimize building social connections through private, user-centred communication, such as WhatsApp and Facebook-like WeChat, tend to inhibit political expression. These technological design effects are stronger when users believe the authoritarian state tolerates discussion, but less important when political talk is sensitive. The findings contribute to the debate on the political consequences of the internet by specifying technological and political conditions
The evolution of the plastid chromosome in land plants: gene content, gene order, gene function
This review bridges functional and evolutionary aspects of plastid chromosome architecture in land plants and their putative ancestors. We provide an overview on the structure and composition of the plastid genome of land plants as well as the functions of its genes in an explicit phylogenetic and evolutionary context. We will discuss the architecture of land plant plastid chromosomes, including gene content and synteny across land plants. Moreover, we will explore the functions and roles of plastid encoded genes in metabolism and their evolutionary importance regarding gene retention and conservation. We suggest that the slow mode at which the plastome typically evolves is likely to be influenced by a combination of different molecular mechanisms. These include the organization of plastid genes in operons, the usually uniparental mode of plastid inheritance, the activity of highly effective repair mechanisms as well as the rarity of plastid fusion. Nevertheless, structurally rearranged plastomes can be found in several unrelated lineages (e.g. ferns, Pinaceae, multiple angiosperm families). Rearrangements and gene losses seem to correlate with an unusual mode of plastid transmission, abundance of repeats, or a heterotrophic lifestyle (parasites or myco-heterotrophs). While only a few functional gene gains and more frequent gene losses have been inferred for land plants, the plastid Ndh complex is one example of multiple independent gene losses and will be discussed in detail. Patterns of ndh-gene loss and functional analyses indicate that these losses are usually found in plant groups with a certain degree of heterotrophy, might rendering plastid encoded Ndh1 subunits dispensable
Synthesis Paper: Targeted Livestock Grazing: Prescription for Healthy Rangelands
Targeted livestock grazing is a proven tool for manipulating rangeland vegetation, and current knowledge about targeted livestock grazing is extensive and expanding rapidly. Targeted grazing prescriptions optimize the timing, frequency, intensity, and selectivity of grazing (or browsing) in combinations that purposely exert grazing/browsing pressure on specific plant species or portions of the landscape. Targeted grazing differs from traditional grazing management in that the goal of targeted grazing is to apply defoliation or trampling to achieve specific vegetation management objectives, whereas the goal of traditional livestock grazing management is generally the production of livestock commodities. A shared aim of targeted livestock grazing and traditional grazing management is to sustain healthy soils, flora, fauna, and water resources that, in turn, can sustain natural ecological processes (e.g., nutrient cycle, water cycle, energy flow). Targeted grazing prescriptions integrate knowledge of plant ecology, livestock nutrition, and livestock foraging behavior. Livestock can be focused on target areas through fencing, herding, or supplement placement. Although practices can be developed to minimize the impact of toxins contained in target plants, the welfare of the animals used in targeted grazing must be a priority. Monitoring is needed to determine if targeted grazing is successful and to refine techniques to improve efficacy and efficiency. Examples of previous research studies and approaches are presented to highlight the ecological benefits that can be achieved when targeted grazing is applied properly. These cases include ways to suppress invasive plants and ways to enhance wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Future research should address the potential to select more adapted and effective livestock for targeted grazing and the associated animal welfare concerns with this practice. Procurámos saber, através da metodologia dos grupos de discussão (focus groups) realizados em duas cidades de Portugal, Lisboa e Porto, as preocupações e perceções dos consumidores relativamente a estes atributos, os quais são essencialmente acreditados. Este conhecimento é fundamental para a aplicação posterior de métodos de preferências declaradas. A comparison of smallscale, pilot-scale and large-scale tests for predicting leaching behaviour of landfilled wastes
Abstract Landfills generate emissions over long periods, often longer than a lifetime. The longest lasting emission is leachate. In order to estimate the future requirements for leachate treatment, different kinds of leaching tests may be applied. In this paper, shaking leaching tests (SLT), landfill-simulator leaching tests and a field-cell leaching test performed with ash, municipal solid waste (MSW) and MSW+ash are evaluated. The tests are compared and the factors influencing leaching are identified and discussed. The factors are: liquid to solid (L/S) ratio, water withdrawal, recirculation rate, presence or absence of biological processes, size of particles, duration of experiment, temperature and pre-treatment of the waste. The presence of biological processes has the greatest impact on leaching and is the main reason why SLT is less useful for long-term predictions. The landfill simulator tests were found to be useful for several different kinds of predictions. However, they are not reliable for predicting the L/S required for reaching a certain concentration. The possibilities for reliable long-term predictions would be facilitated by a better knowledge of the influence of various factors on leaching. Such an increased knowledge would make it possible to enhance waste stabilisation in leaching tests as well as in full-scale landfills.
