Testing demand responsive shared transport services via agent-based simulations
Demand Responsive Shared Transport DRST services take advantage of
Information and Communication Technologies ICT, to provide on demand transport
services booking in real time a ride on a shared vehicle. In this paper, an
agent-based model ABM is presented to test different the feasibility of
different service configurations in a real context. First results show the
impact of route choice strategy on the system performance
Early changes in diaphragmatic function evaluated using ultrasound in cardiac surgery patients: a cohort study.
Little is known about the evolution of diaphragmatic function in the early post-cardiac surgery period. The main purpose of this work is to describe its evolution using ultrasound measurements of muscular excursion and thickening fraction (TF). Single-center prospective study of 79 consecutive uncomplicated elective cardiac surgery patients, using motion-mode during quiet unassisted breathing. Excursion and TF were measured sequentially for each patient [pre-operative (D1), 1 day (D2) and 5 days (D3) after surgery]. Pre-operative median for right and left hemidiaphragmatic excursions were 1.8 (IQR 1.6 to 2.1) cm and 1.7 (1.4 to 2.0) cm, respectively. Pre-operative median right and left thickening fractions were 28 (19 to 36) % and 33 (22 to 51) %, respectively. At D2, there was a reduction in both excursion (right: 1.5 (1.1 to 1.8) cm, p < 0.001, left: 1.5 (1.1 to 1.8), p = 0.003) and thickening fractions (right: 20 (15 to 34) %, p = 0.021, left: 24 (17 to 39) %, p = 0.002), followed by a return to pre-operative values at D3. A positive moderate correlation was found between excursion and thickening fraction (Spearman's rho 0.518 for right and 0.548 for left hemidiaphragm, p < 0.001). Interobserver reliability yielded a bias below 0.1 cm with limits of agreement (LOA) of ± 0.3 cm for excursion and - 2% with LOA of ± 21% for thickening fractions. After cardiac surgery, the evolution of diaphragmatic function is characterized by a transient impairment followed by a quick recovery. Although ultrasound diaphragmatic excursion and thickening fraction are correlated, excursion seems to be a more feasible and reproducible method in this population

Midday measurements of leaf water potential and stomatal conductance are highly correlated with daily water use of Thompson Seedless grapevines
A study was conducted to determine the relationship between midday measurements of vine water status and daily water use of grapevines measured with a weighing lysimeter. Water applications to the vines were terminated on August 24th for 9 days and again on September 14th for 22 days. Daily water use of the vines in the lysimeter (ETLYS) was approximately 40 L vine−1 (5.3 mm) prior to turning the pump off, and it decreased to 22.3 L vine−1 by September 2nd. Pre-dawn leaf water potential (ΨPD) and midday Ψl on August 24th were −0.075 and −0.76 MPa, respectively, with midday Ψl decreasing to −1.28 MPa on September 2nd. Leaf g s decreased from ~500 to ~200 mmol m−2 s−1 during the two dry-down periods. Midday measurements of g s and Ψl were significantly correlated with one another (r = 0.96) and both with ETLYS/ETo (r = ~0.9). The decreases in Ψl, g s, and ETLYS/ETo in this study were also a linear function of the decrease in volumetric soil water content. The results indicate that even modest water stress can greatly reduce grapevine water use and that short-term measures of vine water status taken at midday are a reflection of daily grapevine water us
Challenges in Collaborative HRI for Remote Robot Teams
Collaboration between human supervisors and remote teams of robots is highly
challenging, particularly in high-stakes, distant, hazardous locations, such as
off-shore energy platforms. In order for these teams of robots to truly be
beneficial, they need to be trusted to operate autonomously, performing tasks
such as inspection and emergency response, thus reducing the number of
personnel placed in harm's way. As remote robots are generally trusted less
than robots in close-proximity, we present a solution to instil trust in the
operator through a `mediator robot' that can exhibit social skills, alongside
sophisticated visualisation techniques. In this position paper, we present
general challenges and then take a closer look at one challenge in particular,
discussing an initial study, which investigates the relationship between the
level of control the supervisor hands over to the mediator robot and how this
affects their trust. We show that the supervisor is more likely to have higher
trust overall if their initial experience involves handing over control of the
emergency situation to the robotic assistant. We discuss this result, here, as
well as other challenges and interaction techniques for human-robot

Comparison of the properties of two fossil groups of galaxies with the normal group NGC 6034 based on multiband imaging and optical spectroscopy
We collected multiband imaging and spectroscopy for two fossil groups (RX
J1119.7+2126 and 1RXS J235814.4+150524) and one normal group (NGC 6034). We
computed photometric redshifts in the central zones of each group, combining
previous data with the SDSS five-band data. For each group we investigated the
red sequence (RS) of the color-magnitude relation and computed the luminosity
functions, stellar population ages and distributions of the group members.
Spectroscopy allowed us to investigate the large-scale surroundings of these
groups and the substructure levels in 1RXS J235814.4+150524 and NGC 6034. The
large-scale environment of 1RXS J235814.4+150524 is poor, though its galaxy
density map shows a clear signature of the surrounding cosmic web. RX
J1119.7+2126 appears to be very isolated, while the cosmic environment of NGC
6034 is very rich. At the group scale, 1RXS J235814.4+150524 shows no
substructure. Galaxies with recent stellar populations seem preferentially
located in the group outskirts. A RS is discernable for all three groups in a
color-magnitude diagram. The luminosity functions based on photometric redshift
selection and on statistical background subtraction have comparable shapes, and
agree with the few points obtained from spectroscopic redshifts. These
luminosity functions show the expected dip between first and second brightest
galaxies for the fossil groups only. Their shape is also regular and relatively
flat at faint magnitudes down to the completeness level for RX J1119.7+2126 and
NGC 6034, while there is a clear lack of faint galaxies for 1RXS
J235814.4+150524. RX J1119.7+2126 is definitely classified as a fossil group;
1RXS J235814.4+150524 also has properties very close to those of a fossil

Radiogalaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: spectral index-environment correlations
We analyze optical and radio properties of radiogalaxies detected in the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The sample of radio sources are selected from
the catalogue of Kimball & Ivezi\'c (2008) with flux densities at 325, 1400 and
4850 MHz, using WENSS, NVSS and GB6 radio surveys and from flux measurements at
74 MHz taken from VLA Low-frequency Sky Survey \citep{cohen}. We study
radiogalaxy spectral properties using radio colour-colour diagrams and find
that our sample follows a single power law from 74 to 4850 MHz. The spectral
index vs. spectroscopic redshift relation () is not significant for
our sample of radio sources. We analyze a subsample of radio sources associated
with clusters of galaxies identified from the maxBCG catalogue and find that
about 40% of radio sources with ultra steep spectra (USS, , where
) are associated with galaxy clusters or groups of
galaxies. We construct a Hubble diagram of USS radio sources in the optical
band up to .8 and compare our results with those for normal galaxies
selected from different optical surveys and find that USS radio sources are
around as luminous as the central galaxies in the maxBCG cluster sample and
typically more than 4 magnitudes brighter than normal galaxies at .3.
We study correlations between spectral index, richness and luminosity of
clusters associated with radio sources. We find that USS at low redshift are
rare, most of them reside in regions of unusually high ambient density, such of
those found in rich cluster of galaxies. Our results also suggest that clusters
of galaxies associated with steeper than the average spectra have higher
richness counts and are populated by luminous galaxies in comparison with those
environments associated to radio sources with flatter than the average spectra.
A plausible explanation for our results is that radio emission is more pressure
confined in higher gas density environments such as those found in rich
clusters of galaxies and as a consequence radio lobes in rich galaxy clusters
will expand adiabatically and lose energy via synchrotron and inverse Compton
losses, resulting in a steeper radio spectra.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of

3D-Matched-Filter Galaxy Cluster Finder I: Selection Functions and CFHTLS Deep Clusters
We present an optimised galaxy cluster finder, 3D-Matched-Filter (3D-MF),
which utilises galaxy cluster radial profiles, luminosity functions and
redshift information to detect galaxy clusters in optical surveys. This method
is an improvement over other matched-filter methods, most notably through
implementing redshift slicing of the data to significantly reduce line-of-sight
projections and related false positives. We apply our method to the
Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) Deep fields, finding ~170
galaxy clusters per square degree in the 0.2 <= z <= 1.0 redshift range. Future
surveys such as LSST and JDEM can exploit 3D-MF's automated methodology to
produce complete and reliable galaxy cluster catalogues. We determine the
reliability and accuracy of the statistical approach of our method through a
thorough analysis of mock data from the Millennium Simulation. We detect
clusters with 100% completeness for M_200 >= 3.0x10^(14)M_sun, 88% completeness
for M_200 >= 1.0x10^(14)M_sun, and 72% completeness well into the 10^(13)M_sun
cluster mass range. We show a 36% multiple detection rate for cluster masses >=
1.5x10^(13)M_sun and a 16% false detection rate for galaxy clusters >~
5x10^(13)M_sun, reporting that for clusters with masses <~ 5x10^(13)M_sun false
detections may increase up to ~24%. Utilising these selection functions we
conclude that our galaxy cluster catalogue is the most complete CFHTLS Deep

A tele-assessment system for monitoring treatment effects in subjects with spinal cord injury.
We developed a method for remote measurement of balance and leg force in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). In a group of 21 patients, both telemedicine and conventional clinical assessments were conducted at baseline and six months later. Telemedicine assessments were successfully acquired and transmitted at first attempt. The time required to set up the telemedicine equipment, position the subject, perform the measurements, and then send the data to the university laboratory was approximately 30 minutes. After six months, several motor and sensory functions showed significant changes. There were significant correlations between changes in remotely-measured leg force and changes in several of the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) sensory and motor scores. Changes in balance did not show any significant correlations with changes in the ASIA scores. Intra-rater reliability was better than inter-rater reliability. Use of telemedicine to remotely monitor changes in patients with SCI appears promising
DWSB in heterotic flux compactifications
We address the construction of non-supersymmetric vacua in heterotic
compactifications with intrinsic torsion and background fluxes. In particular,
we implement the approach of domain-wall supersymmetry breaking (DWSB)
previously developed in the context of type II flux compactifications. This
approach is based on considering backgrounds where probe NS5-branes wrapping
internal three-cycles and showing up as four-dimensional domain-walls do not
develop a BPS bound, while all the other BPS bounds characterizing the N=1
supersymmetric compactifications are preserved at tree-level. Via a scalar
potential analysis we provide the conditions for these backgrounds to solve the
ten-dimensional equations of motion including order \alpha' corrections. We
also consider backgrounds where some of the NS5-domain-walls develop a BPS
bound, show their relation to no-scale SUSY-breaking vacua and construct
explicit examples via elliptic fibrations. Finally, we consider backgrounds
with a non-trivial gaugino condensate and discuss their relation to
supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua in the present context.Comment: 56 pages, 1 figur
