Restriction theorems for -(semi)stable framed sheaves
We provide a generalization of Mehta-Ramanathan theorems to framed sheaves:
we prove that the restriction of a -semistable framed sheaf on a
nonsingular projective irreducible variety, of dimension greater or equal than
two, to a general hypersurface of sufficiently high degree is again
-semistable. The same holds for -stability under some additional

Adults with spontaneous aerobic Gram-negative bacillary meningitis admitted to the intensive care unit
ABSTRACTThe characteristics of spontaneous aerobic Gram-negative bacillary meningitis (AGNBM) were determined in 40 adults requiring admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) during a 16-year period in ten French ICUs. Eight infections were hospital-acquired and most patients had predisposing factors, mainly chronic alcoholism and an immunocompromised status. Three immunosuppressed patients had disseminated strongyloidiasis. Gram's stain, cerebrospinal fluid and blood cultures were positive for 85%, 98% and 80% of cases, respectively. Escherichia coli (57%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (17%) were the most frequent pathogens. In-ICU mortality was 38%. Spontaneous AGNBM is a rare complication of bacteraemia in adults. The severity of predisposing underlying diseases might explain the poor prognosis despite appropriate antimicrobial therapy
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus Infection of Mallards with Homo- and Heterosubtypic Immunity Induced by Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza Viruses
The potential role of wild birds as carriers of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) subtype H5N1 is still a matter of debate. Consecutive or simultaneous infections with different subtypes of influenza viruses of low pathogenicity (LPAIV) are very common in wild duck populations. To better understand the epidemiology and pathogenesis of HPAIV H5N1 infections in natural ecosystems, we investigated the influence of prior infection of mallards with homo- (H5N2) and heterosubtypic (H4N6) LPAIV on exposure to HPAIV H5N1. In mallards with homosubtypic immunity induced by LPAIV infection, clinical disease was absent and shedding of HPAIV from respiratory and intestinal tracts was grossly reduced compared to the heterosubtypic and control groups (mean GEC/100 µl at 3 dpi: 3.0×102 vs. 2.3×104 vs. 8.7×104; p<0.05). Heterosubtypic immunity induced by an H4N6 infection mediated a similar but less pronounced effect. We conclude that the epidemiology of HPAIV H5N1 in mallards and probably other aquatic wild bird species is massively influenced by interfering immunity induced by prior homo- and heterosubtypic LPAIV infections
In situ detection of boron by ChemCam on Mars
We report the first in situ detection of boron on Mars. Boron has been detected in Gale crater at levels Curiosity rover ChemCam instrument in calcium-sulfate-filled fractures, which formed in a late-stage groundwater circulating mainly in phyllosilicate-rich bedrock interpreted as lacustrine in origin. We consider two main groundwater-driven hypotheses to explain the presence of boron in the veins: leaching of borates out of bedrock or the redistribution of borate by dissolution of borate-bearing evaporite deposits. Our results suggest that an evaporation mechanism is most likely, implying that Gale groundwaters were mildly alkaline. On Earth, boron may be a necessary component for the origin of life; on Mars, its presence suggests that subsurface groundwater conditions could have supported prebiotic chemical reactions if organics were also present and provides additional support for the past habitability of Gale crater
Cold Induces Micro- and Nano-Scale Reorganization of Lipid Raft Markers at Mounds of T-Cell Membrane Fluctuations
Whether and how cold causes changes in cell-membrane or lipid rafts remain poorly characterized. Using the NSOM/QD and confocal imaging systems, we found that cold caused microscale redistribution of lipid raft markers, GM1 for lipid and CD59 for protein, from the peripheral part of microdomains to the central part on Jurkat T cells, and that cold also induced the nanoscale size-enlargement (1/3- to 2/3-fold) of the nanoclusters of lipid raft markers and even the colocalization of GM1 and CD59 nanoclusters. These findings indicate cold-induced lateral rearrangement/coalescence of raft-related membrane heterogeneity. The cold-induced re-distribution of lipid raft markers under a nearly-natural condition provide clues for their alternations, and help to propose a model in which raft lipids associate themselves or interact with protein components to generate functional membrane heterogeneity in response to stimulus. The data also underscore the possible cold-induced artifacts in early-described cold-related experiments and the detergent-resistance-based analyses of lipid rafts at 4°C, and provide a biophysical explanation for recently-reported cold-induced activation of signaling pathways in T cells. Importantly, our fluorescence-topographic NSOM imaging demonstrated that GM1/CD59 raft markers distributed and re-distributed at mounds but not depressions of T-cell membrane fluctuations. Such mound-top distribution of lipid raft markers or lipid rafts provides spatial advantage for lipid rafts or contact molecules interacting readily with neighboring cells or free molecules
Mapping the conformations of biological assemblies
Mapping conformational heterogeneity of macromolecules presents a formidable
challenge to X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, which often
presume its absence. This has severely limited our knowledge of the
conformations assumed by biological systems and their role in biological
function, even though they are known to be important. We propose a new approach
to determining to high resolution the three-dimensional conformations of
biological entities such as molecules, macromolecular assemblies, and
ultimately cells, with existing and emerging experimental techniques. This
approach may also enable one to circumvent current limits due to radiation

Intruder bands and configuration mixing in the lead isotopes
A three-configuration mixing calculation is performed in the context of the
interacting boson model with the aim to describe recently observed collective
bands built on low-lying states in neutron-deficient lead isotopes. The
configurations that are included correspond to the regular, spherical states as
well as two-particle two-hole and four-particle four-hole excitations across

Coumarin anticoagulants and co-trimoxazole: avoid the combination rather than manage the interaction
OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to examine the management of the interaction between acenocoumarol or phenprocoumon and several antibiotics by anticoagulation clinics and to compare the consequences of this interaction on users of co-trimoxazole with those for users of other antibiotics. METHODS: A follow-up study was conducted at four anticoagulation clinics in The Netherlands. Data on measurements of the International Normalised Ratio (INR), application of a preventive dose reduction (PDR) of the coumarin anticoagulant, fever and time within or outside the therapeutic INR range were collected. RESULTS: The study cohort consisted of 326 subjects. A PDR was given more often to users of co-trimoxazole PDR than to users of other antibiotics. The PDR in co-trimoxazole users resulted in a significantly reduced risk of both moderate overanticoagulation (INR >4.5) and severe overanticoagulation (INR >6.0) compared with no PDR, with odds ratios (ORs) of 0.06 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.01-0.51] and 0.09 (95% CI: 0.01-0.92), respectively. In co-trimoxazole users without PDR, the risk of overanticoagulation was significantly increased compared with users of other antibiotics. All co-trimoxazole users spent significantly more time under the therapeutic INR range during the first 6 weeks after the course than users of other antibiotics. CONCLUSION: PDR is effective in preventing overanticoagulation in co-trimoxazole users, but results in a significantly prolonged period of underanticoagulation after the course. Avoidance of concomitant use of co-trimoxazole with acenocoumarol or phenprocoumon seems to be a safer approach than management of the interaction between these drugs
Identification of the Antibacterial Compound Produced by the Marine Epiphytic Bacterium Pseudovibrio sp. D323 and Related Sponge-Associated Bacteria
Surface-associated marine bacteria often produce secondary metabolites with antagonistic activities. In this study, tropodithietic acid (TDA) was identified to be responsible for the antibacterial activity of the marine epiphytic bacterium Pseudovibrio sp. D323 and related strains. Phenol was also produced by these bacteria but was not directly related to the antibacterial activity. TDA was shown to effectively inhibit a range of marine bacteria from various phylogenetic groups. However TDA-producers themselves were resistant and are likely to possess resistance mechanism preventing autoinhibition. We propose that TDA in isolate D323 and related eukaryote-associated bacteria plays a role in defending the host organism against unwanted microbial colonisation and, possibly, bacterial pathogens
