Allen Telescope Array Multi-Frequency Observations of the Sun
We present the first observations of the Sun with the Allen Telescope Array
(ATA). We used up to six frequencies, from 1.43 to 6 GHz, and baselines from 6
to 300 m. To our knowledge, these are the first simultaneous multifrequency
full-Sun maps obtained at microwave frequencies without mosaicing. The
observations took place when the Sun was relatively quiet, although at least
one active region was present each time. We present multi-frequency flux
budgets for each sources on the Sun. Outside of active regions, assuming
optically thin bremsstrahlung (free--free) coronal emission on top of an
optically thick ~10 000 K chromosphere, the multi-frequency information can be
condensed into a single, frequency-independent, "coronal bremsstrahlung
contribution function" [EM/sqrt(T)] map. This technique allows the separation
of the physics of emission as well as a measurement of the density structure of
the corona. Deviations from this simple relationship usually indicate the
presence of an additional gyroresonance-emission component, as is typical in

Dynamical Casimir effect without boundary conditions
The moving-mirror problem is microscopically formulated without invoking the
external boundary conditions. The moving mirrors are described by the quantized
matter field interacting with the photon field, forming dynamical cavity
polaritons: photons in the cavity are dressed by electrons in the moving
mirrors. The effective Hamiltonian for the polariton is derived, and
corrections to the results based on the external boundary conditions are

Mid-crustal deformation of the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri Himalaya, central Nepal: An atypical example of channel flow during the Himalayan orogeny
The channel-flow model for the Greater Himalayan Sequence (GHS) of the Himalayan orogen involves a partially molten, rheologically weak, mid-crustal layer âflowingâ southward relative to the upper and lower crust during late OligoceneâMiocene. Flow was driven by topographic overburden, underthrusting, and focused erosion. We present new structural and thermobarometric analyses from the GHS in the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri HimaÂlaya, central Nepal; these data suggest that during exhumation, the GHS cooled, strengthened, and transformed from a weak âactive channelâ to a strong âchannel plugâ at greater depths than elsewhere in the Himalaya. After strengthening, continued convergence resulted in localized top-southwest (top-SW) shortening on the South Tibetan detachment system (STDS). The GHS in the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri Himalaya displays several geological features that distinguish it from other Himalayan regions. These include reduced volumes of leucogranite and migmatite, no evidence for partial melting within the sillimanite stability field, reduced structural thickness, and late-stage top-southwest shortening in the STDS. New and previously published structural and thermobarometric constraints suggest that the channel-flow model can be applied to mid-Eoceneâearly Miocene mid-crustal evolution of the GHS in the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri Himalaya. However, pressure-temperature-time (PTt) constraints indicate that following peak conditions, the GHS in this region did not undergo rapid isothermal exhumation and widespread sillimaÂnite-grade decompression melting, as commonly recorded elsewhere in the HimaÂlaya. Instead, lower-than-typical structural thickness and melt volumes suggest that the upper part of the GHS (Upper Greater Himalayan Sequence [UGHS]âthe proposed channel) had a greater viscosity than in other HimaÂlayan regions. We suggest that viscosity-limited, subdued channel flow prevented exhumation on an isothermal trajectory and forced the UGHS to exhume slowly. These findings are distinct from other regions in the Himalaya. As such, we describe the mid-crustal evolution of the GHS in the Annapurna-ÂDhaulagiri Himalaya as an atypical example of channel flow during the Himalayan orogeny
Solutions of Gross-Pitaevskii equations beyond the hydrodynamic approximation: Application to the vortex problem
We develop the multiscale technique to describe excitations of a
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) whose characteristic scales are comparable with
the healing length, thus going beyond the conventional hydrodynamical
approximation. As an application of the theory we derive approximate explicit
vortex and other solutions. The dynamical stability of the vortex is discussed
on the basis of the mathematical framework developed here, the result being
that its stability is granted at least up to times of the order of seconds,
which is the condensate lifetime. Our analytical results are confirmed by the

The association between walking speed from short- and standard-distance tests with the risk of all-cause mortality among adults with radiographic knee osteoarthritis: data from three large United States cohort studies
Objective: Adults with radiographic knee OA (rKOA) are at increased risk of mortality and walking difficulty may modify this relation. Little is known about specific aspects of walking difficulty that increase mortality risk. We investigated the association of walking speed (objective measure of walking difficulty) with mortality and examined the threshold that best discriminated this risk in adults with rKOA. Methods: Participants with rKOA from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project (JoCoOA, longitudinal population-based cohort), Osteoarthritis Initiative and Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (OAI and MOST, cohorts of individuals with or at high risk of knee OA) were included. Baseline speed was measured via 2.4-meter (m) walk test (short-distance) in JoCoOA and 20-m walk test (standard-distance) in OAI and MOST. To examine the association of walking speed with mortality risk over 9 years, hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated from Cox regression models adjusted for potential confounders. A Maximal Likelihood Ratio Chi-square Approach was utilized to identify an optimal threshold of walking speed predictive of mortality. Results: Deaths after 9 years of follow-up occurred in 23.3% (290/1244) of JoCoOA and 5.9% (249/4215) of OAI + MOST. Walking 0.2 m/s slower during short- and standard-distance walk tests was associated with 23% (aHR [95%CI]; 1.23 [1.10, 1.39]) and 25% (1.25 [1.09, 1.43]) higher mortality risk, respectively. Walking <0.5 m/s on short-distance and <1.2 m/s standard-distance walk tests, best discriminated those with and without mortality risk. Conclusion: Slower walking speed measured via short- and standard-distance walk tests was associated with increased mortality risk in adults with rKOA
Spatializing the Ecological Leviathan: Territorial Strategies and the Production of Regional Natures
This paper explores a dual absence â the absence of the state within contemporary geographical analyses of nature; and the absence of nature within contemporary explorations of state power. We argue that the modern state continues to play a crucial role in framing social interactions with nature, while nature is still vital to states within their realization of different forms of material and ideological power. In order to reconnect analyses of the state and nature, this paper combines work on the production of nature and state strategy with Lefebvreâs recently translated writings on state space and territory. By focusing on the production of territory (or state space), we explore the interaction of the state and nature in the context of the political management of social and ecological space. We unravel the spatial entanglements of the state and nature through an analysis of the British stateâs territorial strategies within the West Midlands region. By considering three key historical periods within the history of the West Mid-lands we reveal how the emergence of the regional space called the West Midlands is a product of the ongoing spatial dialectics of state and nature therein
LOFAR 144-MHz follow-up observations of GW170817

All rights reserved.We present low-radio-frequency follow-up observations of AT 2017gfo, the electromagnetic counterpart of GW170817, which was the first binary neutron star merger to be detected by Advanced LIGO-Virgo. These data, with a central frequency of 144 MHz, were obtained with LOFAR, the Low-Frequency Array. The maximum elevation of the target is just 13.7 degrees when observed with LOFAR, making our observations particularly challenging to calibrate and significantly limiting the achievable sensitivity. On time-scales of 130-138 and 371-374 days after the merger event, we obtain 3 upper limits for the afterglow component of 6.6 and 19.5 mJy beam, respectively. Using our best upper limit and previously published, contemporaneous higher-frequency radio data, we place a limit on any potential steepening of the radio spectrum between 610 and 144 MHz: the two-point spectral index . We also show that LOFAR can detect the afterglows of future binary neutron star merger events occurring at more favourable elevations.Peer reviewe
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is a second generation water Cherenkov
detector designed to determine whether the currently observed solar neutrino
deficit is a result of neutrino oscillations. The detector is unique in its use
of D2O as a detection medium, permitting it to make a solar model-independent
test of the neutrino oscillation hypothesis by comparison of the charged- and
neutral-current interaction rates. In this paper the physical properties,
construction, and preliminary operation of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are
described. Data and predicted operating parameters are provided whenever
