Γ to X Transport of Photoexcited Electrons in Type II GaAs/AlAs Multiple Quantum Well Structures
We report novel femtosecond time‐resolved measurements performed on staggered type II GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum well structures. Photoexcited electrons were determined to transfer from the Γ valley of the GaAs layers to the X valleys of the AlAs in 100 and 400 fs for 8‐ and 11‐monolayer‐thick GaAs samples, respectively
Evolutionary Roots of Property Rights; The Natural and Cultural Nature of Human Cooperation
Debates about the role of natural and cultural selection in the development of prosocial, antisocial and socially neutral mechanisms and behavior raise questions that touch property rights, cooperation, and conflict. For example, some researchers suggest that cooperation and prosociality evolved by natural selection (Hamilton 1964, Trivers 1971, Axelrod and Hamilton 1981, De Waal 2013, 2014), while others claim that natural selection is insufficient for the evolution of cooperation, which required in addition cultural selection (Sterelny 2013, Bowles and Gintis 2003, Seabright 2013, Norenzayan 2013). Some scholars focus on the complexity and hierarchical nature of the evolution of cooperation as involving different tools associated with lower and the higher levels of competition (Nowak 2006, Okasha 2006); others suggest that humans genetically inherited heuristics that favor prosocial behavior such as generosity, forgiveness or altruistic punishment (Ridley 1996, Bowles and Gintis 2004, Rolls 2005). We argue these mechanisms are not genetically inherited; rather, they are features inherited through cultural selection. To support this view we invoke inclusive fitness theory, which states that individuals tend to maximize their inclusive fitness, rather than maximizing group fitness. We further reject the older notion of natural group selection - as well as more recent versions (West, Mouden, Gardner 2011) – which hold that natural selection favors cooperators within a group (Wynne-Edwards 1962). For Wynne-Edwards, group selection leads to group adaptations; the survival of individuals therefore depends on the survival of the group and a sharing of resources. Individuals who do not cooperate, who are selfish, face extinction due to rapid and over-exploitation of resources
Spatio-temporal pattern of viral meningitis in Michigan, 1993-2001
To characterize Michigan’s high viral meningitis incidence rates, 8,803 cases from 1993–2001 were analyzed for standard epidemiological indices, geographic distribution, and spatio-temporal clusters. Blacks and infants were found to be high-risk groups. Annual seasonality and interannual variability in epidemic magnitude were apparent. Cases were concentrated in southern Michigan, and cumulative incidence was correlated with population density at the county level (r=0.45, p<0.001). Kulldorff’s Scan test identified the occurrence of spatio-temporal clusters in Lower Michigan during July–October 1998 and 2001 (p=0.01). More extensive data on cases, laboratory isolates, sociodemographics, and environmental exposures should improve detection and enhance the effectiveness of a Space-Time Information System aimed at prevention.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47932/1/10109_2005_Article_151.pd
Correlation Between the Deuteron Characteristics and the Low-energy Triplet np Scattering Parameters
The correlation relationship between the deuteron asymptotic normalization
constant, , and the triplet np scattering length, , is
investigated. It is found that 99.7% of the asymptotic constant is
determined by the scattering length . It is shown that the linear
correlation relationship between the quantities and
provides a good test of correctness of various models of nucleon-nucleon
interaction. It is revealed that, for the normalization constant and
for the root-mean-square deuteron radius , the results obtained with the
experimental value recommended at present for the triplet scattering length
are exaggerated with respect to their experimental counterparts. By
using the latest experimental phase shifts of Arndt et al., we obtain, for the
low-energy scattering parameters (, , ) and for the
deuteron characteristics (, ), results that comply well with

The Breakdown of Alfven's Theorem in Ideal Plasma Flows
This paper presents both rigorous results and physical theory on the
breakdown of magnetic flux conservation for ideal plasmas, by nonlinear
effects. Our analysis is based upon an effective equation for
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes at length-scales with smaller scales
eliminated, as in renormalization-group methodology. We prove that
flux-conservation can be violated for an arbitrarily small length-scale
and in the absence of any non-ideality, but only if singular current sheets and
vortex sheets both exist and intersect in sets of large enough dimension. This
result gives analytical support to and rigorous constraints on theories of fast
turbulent reconnection. Mathematically, our theorem is analogous to Onsager's
result on energy dissipation anomaly in hydrodynamic turbulence. As a physical
phenomenon, the breakdown of magnetic-flux conservation in ideal MHD is similar
to the decay of magnetic flux through a narrow superconducting ring, by
phase-slip of quantized flux lines. The effect should be observable both in
numerical MHD simulations and in laboratory plasma experiments at moderately
high magnetic Reynolds numbers.Comment: 38 pages, 1 figur
Evidence of strong quasar feedback in the early Universe
Most theoretical models invoke quasar driven outflows to quench star
formation in massive galaxies, this feedback mechanism is required to account
for the population of old and passive galaxies observed in the local universe.
The discovery of massive, old and passive galaxies at z=2, implies that such
quasar feedback onto the host galaxy must have been at work very early on,
close to the reionization epoch. We have observed the [CII]158um transition in
SDSSJ114816.64+525150.3 that, at z=6.4189, is one of the most distant quasars
known. We detect broad wings of the line tracing a quasar-driven massive
outflow. This is the most distant massive outflow ever detected and is likely
tracing the long sought quasar feedback, already at work in the early Universe.
The outflow is marginally resolved on scales of about 16 kpc, implying that the
outflow can really affect the whole galaxy, as required by quasar feedback
models. The inferred outflow rate, dM/dt > 3500 Msun/yr, is the highest ever
found. At this rate the outflow can clean the gas in the host galaxy, and

Synchronisation of apical constriction and cell cycle progression is a conserved behaviour of pseudostratified neuroepithelia informed by their tissue geometry
Neuroepithelial cells balance tissue growth requirement with the morphogenetic imperative of closing the neural tube. They apically constrict to generate mechanical forces which elevate the neural folds, but are thought to apically dilate during mitosis. However, we previously reported that mitotic neuroepithelial cells in the mouse posterior neuropore have smaller apical surfaces than non-mitotic cells. Here, we document progressive apical enrichment of non-muscle myosin-II in mitotic, but not non-mitotic, neuroepithelial cells with smaller apical areas. Live-imaging of the chick posterior neuropore confirms apical constriction synchronised with mitosis, reaching maximal constriction by anaphase, before division and re-dilation. Mitotic apical constriction amplitude is significantly greater than interphase constrictions. To investigate conservation in humans, we characterised early stages of iPSC differentiation through dual SMAD-inhibition to robustly produce pseudostratified neuroepithelia with apically enriched actomyosin. These cultured neuroepithelial cells achieve an equivalent apical area to those in mouse embryos. iPSC-derived neuroepithelial cells have large apical areas in G2 which constrict in M phase and retain this constriction in G1/S. Given that this differentiation method produces anterior neural identities, we studied the anterior neuroepithelium of the elevating mouse mid-brain neural tube. Instead of constricting, mid-brain mitotic neuroepithelial cells have larger apical areas than interphase cells. Tissue geometry differs between the apically convex early midbrain and flat posterior neuropore. Culturing human neuroepithelia on equivalently convex surfaces prevents mitotic apical constriction. Thus, neuroepithelial cells undergo high-amplitude apical constriction synchronised with cell cycle progression but the timing of their constriction if influenced by tissue geometry
Smoking and health-related quality of life in English general population: Implications for economic evaluations

Methods: Using the 2006 round of Health Survey for England data (n = 13,241), this paper aims to examine the impact of smoking status on health-related quality of life in English population. Depending upon the nature of the EQ-5D data (i.e. tariff or domains), linear or logistic regression models were fitted to control for biology, clinical conditions, socio-economic background and lifestyle factors that an individual may have regardless of their smoking status. Age- and gender-specific predicted values according to smoking status are offered as the potential 'utility' values to be used in future economic evaluation models. Results: The observed difference of 0.1100 in EQ-5D scores between never-smokers (0.8839) and heavy-smokers (0.7739) reduced to 0.0516 after adjusting for biological, clinical, lifestyle and socioeconomic conditions. Heavy-smokers, when compared with never-smokers, were significantly more likely to report some/severe problems in all five domains - mobility (67%), self-care (70%), usual activity (42%), pain/discomfort (46%) and anxiety/depression (86%) -. 'Utility' values by age and gender for each category of smoking are provided to be used in the future economic evaluations. Conclusion: Smoking is significantly and negatively associated with health-related quality of life in English general population and the magnitude of this association is determined by the number of cigarettes smoked. The varying degree of this association, captured through instruments such as EQ-5D, may need to be fed into the design of future economic evaluations where the intervention being evaluated affects (e.g. tobacco control) or is affected (e.g. treatment for lung cancer) by individual's (or patients') smoking status
