v-P 2 O 5 micro-clustering in P-doped silica studied by a first-principles Raman investigation
Synthetic vitreous silica is currently the preferred material for the production of optical fibres because of the several excellent properties of this glass, e.g. high transmission in the visible and IR domains, high mechanical strength, chemical durability, and ease of doping with various materials. For instance, fiber lasers and amplifiers exploit the light amplification properties provided by rare-earth ions employed as dopants in the core of silica-based optical fibers. The structure and composition of the nearest neighbor shell surrounding rare-earth ions in silica-based optical fibers and amplifiers have been intensively debated in the last decade. To reduce aggregation effects between rare-earth ions, co-dopants such as phosphorus and aluminium are added as structural modifiers; phosphorus-doping, in particular, has proved to be very efficient in dissolving rare-earth ions. In this work, we provide further insights concerning the embedding of P atoms into the silica network, which may be relevant for explaining the ease of formation of a phosphorus pentoxide nearest-neighbor shell around a rare-earth dopant. In particular, by means of first-principles calculations, we discuss alternative models for an irradiation (UV, x\u2013, \u3b3-rays) induced paramagnetic center, i.e. the so called room-temperature phosphorus-oxygen-hole center, and its precursors. We report that the most likely precursor of a room-temperature phosphorus-oxygen-hole center comprises of a micro-cluster of a few (at least two) neighboring phosphate tetrahedra, and correspondingly that the occurrence of isolated [(O-) 2 P(=O) 2 ] 12 units is unlikely even at low P-doping concentrations. In fact, this work predicts that the symmetric stretching of P=O bonds in isolated [(O-) 2 P(=O) 2 ] 12 units appears as a Raman band at a frequency of ~1110 cm 121 , and only by including at least another corner-sharing phosphate tetrahedron, it is shown to shift to higher frequencies (up to ~40 cm 121 ) due to the shortening of P=O bonds, thereby leading to an improved agreement with the observed Raman band located at ~1145 cm 121
A Toolchain Architecture for Condition Monitoring Using the Eclipse Arrowhead Framework
Condition Monitoring is one of the most critical applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) within the context of Industry 4.0. Current deployments typically present interoperability and management issues, requiring human intervention along the engineering process of the systems; in addition, the fragmentation of the IoT landscape, and the adoption of poor architectural solutions often make it difficult to integrate third-party devices in a seamless way. In this paper, we tackle these issues by proposing a tool-driven architecture that supports heterogeneous sensor management through well-established interoperability solutions for the IoT domain, i.e. the Eclipse Arrowhead framework and the recent Web of Things (WoT) standard released by the W3C working group. We deploy the architecture in a real Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) scenario, which validates each developed tool and demonstrates the increased automation derived from their combined usage
Lessons Learned from Creating a Mobile Version of an Educational Board Game to Increase Situational Awareness
This paper reports on an iterative design process for a serious game, which aims to raise situational awareness among different stakeholders in a logistics value chain by introducing multi-user role-playing games. It does so in several phases: After introducing the field of logistics as a problem domain for an educational challenge, it firstly describes the design of an educational board game for the field of disruption handling in logistics processes. Secondly, it de-scribes how the board game can be realized in an open-source mobile serious games platform and identifies lessons learned based on advantages and issues found. Thirdly, it derives requirements for a re-design of the mobile game and finally draws conclusions.SALOM
Finding benchmark brown dwarfs to probe the IMF as a function of time
Using a simulated disk brown dwarf (BD) population, we find that new large
area infrared surveys are expected to identify enough BDs covering wide enough
mass--age ranges to potentially measure the mass function down to ~0.03Mo, and
the BD formation history out to 10 Gyr, at a level capable of establishing if
BD formation follows star formation. We suggest these capabilities are best
realised by spectroscopic calibration of BD properties (Teff, g and [M/H])
which, when combined with a measured luminosity and an evolutionary model can
give BD mass and age relatively independent of BD atmosphere models. Such
calibration requires an empirical understanding of how BD spectra are affected
by variations in these properties, and thus the identification and study of
"benchmark BDs" whose age and composition can be established independently. We
identify the best sources of benchmark BDs as young open cluster members,
moving group members, and wide (>1000AU) BD companions to both subgiant stars
and high mass white dwarfs (WDs). We have used 2MASS to measure a wide L dwarf
companion fraction of 2.7(+0.7/-0.5)%, which equates to a BD companion fraction
of 34(+9/-6)% for an alpha~1 companion mass function. Using this value we
simulate populations of wide BD binaries, and estimate that 80(+21/-14)
subgiant--BD binaries, and 50(+13/-10) benchmark WD--BD binaries could be
identified using current and new facilities. The WD--BD binaries should all be
identifiable using the Large Area Survey component of UKIDSS combined with
Sloan. Discovery of the subgiant--BD binaries will require a NIR imaging
campaign around a large (~900) sample of Hipparcos subgiants. If identified,
spectral studies of these benchmark brown dwarfs could reveal the spectral
sensitivities across the Teff, g and [M/H] space probed by new surveys.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

CONISMA, CNR and CIRCE, involved Italian research units (RUs) working on cetaceans to joina National Network answering the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requirements by sharing
monitoring data. Data obtained during the 2016 monitoring campaigns by 13 RUs are presented here
Up for Count? Central Bank Words and Financial Stress
While knowing there is a financial distress when you see it might be true, it is not particularly helpful. Indeed, central banks have an interest in understanding more systematically how their communication affects the markets, not least in order to avoid unnecessary volatility; the markets for their part have an interest in better deciphering the message of central banks, especially of course with regard to the conduct of future monetary policy. In this paper we use a novel approach rooted in textual analysis to begin to address these issues. Building on previous work from textual analysis, we are able to use quantitative methods to help identify and measure financial stress. We apply the techniques to the European Central Bank's Monthly Bulletin and show that the results give a much more complete and nuanced picture of market distress than those based only on market data and may help improve how the Central Bank's communication is designed and understood

Combining Logics to Transform Organizational Agency: Blending Industry and Art at Alessi
To understand how organizations combine conflicting institutional logics strategically to create and pursue new market opportunities, we conducted an in-depth longitudinal study of the multiple efforts of the Italian manufacturer of household goods Alessi to combine the logics of industrial manufacturing and cultural production. Over three decades, Alessi developed three different strategies to combine normative elements of the two logics, using each strategy to envision and pursue different market opportunities. By combining the logics of industrial manufacturing and cultural production, Alessi was able to envision new possibilities for value creation and to enact them through innovation in product design. The three strategies triggered a common set of mechanisms through which the purposeful combining of logics enabled the pursuit of opportunity, while each strategy structured the process differently. We develop a theoretical model linking the development of recombinant strategies to the dynamic restructuring of organizational agency and the related capacity to create and pursue new market opportunities. Our findings and theoretical insights advance understanding of the processes through which organizations challenge taken-for-granted beliefs and practices to create new market opportunities, use logics as resources to enable embedded agency, and design hybrid organizational arrangements
Productivity in Electricity Retail after Market Liberalisation: Analysing the Effects of Ownership and Firm's Governance Structure
This paper, which is one of the first to estimate productivity in retail electricity for a European country after liberalisation, analyses the effect of ownership and governance structure by using a unique dataset of German electricity retailers from 2003 to 2012. An innovative service production function for the retail sector is derived with labour and external services as the main inputs. A structural model is used with a proxy function for productivity to overcome the endogeneity of input choice. Ownership is controlled for in the law of motion for productivity. The results of the dataset used to validate the model show that firm-level productivity did not increase after 2008 and that ownership had no effect on productivity. The results provide useful insights into the link between ownership and productivity in modern public enterprises after liberalisation
