    Washburn extraction and width of the IUE point spread function

    The Washburn Extraction Routine for low dispersion IUE spectra was reviewed. The shape of the point spread function (PSF) in low dispersion spectra is sufficiently well described by a gaussian function. The PSF is in large and small aperture essentially identical and values of sigma are presented. Several advantages of the extraction routine are mentioned

    L-band (3.5 micron) IR-excess in massive star formation, II. RCW 57/NGC 3576

    We present a JHKL survey of the massive star forming region RCW 57 (NGC 3576) based on L-band data at 3.5 micron taken with SPIREX (South Pole Infrared Explorer), and 2MASS JHK data at 1.25-2.2 micron. This is the second of two papers, the first one concerning a similar JHKL survey of 30 Doradus. Colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams are used to detect sources with infrared excess. This excess emission is interpreted as coming from circumstellar disks, and hence gives the cluster disk fraction (CDF). Based on the CDF and the age of RCW 57, it is possible to draw conclusions on the formation and early evolution of massive stars. The infrared excess is detected by comparing the locations of sources in JHKL colour-colour and L vs. (K-L) colour-magnitude diagrams to the reddening band due to interstellar extinction. A total of 251 sources were detected. More than 50% of the 209 sources included in the diagrams have an infrared excess. Comparison with other JHKL surveys, including the results on 30 Doradus from the first paper, support a very high initial disk fraction (>80%) even for massive stars, although there is an indication of a possible faster evolution of circumstellar disks around high mass stars. 33 sources only found in the L-band indicate the presence of heavily embedded, massive Class I protostars.     Photomorphogenic mutants of tomato

    Photomorphogenesis of tomato is being studied with the aid of mutants which are either modified in their photore- ceptor composition or in their signal transduction chain(s) . Several mutants affecting the phytochrome family of photoreceptors, some of which appear deficient for specific genes encoding phytochrome apoproteins have been isolated . In addition, other mutants, including transgenic lines overexpressing phytochrome A, exhibit exaggerated photomorphogenesis during de-etiolation . Anthocyanin biosynthesis and plastid development are being used as model systems for the dissection of the complex interactions among photomorphogenic photoreceptors and to elucidate the nature of their transduction chains

    Scattering by Interstellar Dust Grains: Optical and Ultraviolet

    Scattering and absorption properties at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths are calculated for an interstellar dust model consisting of carbonaceous grains and amorphous silicate grains. Polarization as a function of scattering angle is calculated for selected wavelengths from the IR to the vacuum UV. The widely-used Henyey-Greenstein phase function provides a good approximation for the scattering phase function between ~0.4 and 1 micron, but fails to fit the calculated phase functions at shorter wavelengths and longer wavelengths. A new analytic phase function is presented. It is exact at long wavelengths, and provides a good fit to the numerically-calculated phase function for lambda > 0.27um. Observational determinations of the scattering albedo and show considerable disagreement, especially in the ultraviolet.     An evolutionary technique to approximate multiple optimal alignments

    The alignment of observed and modeled behavior is an essential aid for organizations, since it opens the door for root-cause analysis and enhancement of processes. The state-of-the-art technique for computing alignments has exponential time and space complexity, hindering its applicability for medium and large instances. Moreover, the fact that there may be multiple optimal alignments is perceived as a negative situation, while in reality it may provide a more comprehensive picture of the model’s explanation of observed behavior, from which other techniques may benefit. This paper presents a novel evolutionary technique for approximating multiple optimal alignments. Remarkably, the memory footprint of the proposed technique is bounded, representing an unprecedented guarantee with respect to the state-of-the-art methods for the same task.     Unravelling the nature of HD 81032 - a new RS CVn Binary

    BVR photometric and quasi-simultaneous optical spectroscopic observations of the star HD 81032 have been carried out during the years 2000 - 2004. A photometric period of 18.802±0.0718.802 \pm 0.07 d has been detected for this star. A large group of spots with a migration period of 7.43±0.077.43 \pm 0.07 years is inferred from the first three years of the data. Hα\alpha and Ca II H and K emissions from the star indicate high chromospheric activity. The available photometry in the BVRIJHK bands is consistent with spectral type of K0 IV previously found for this star. We have also examined the spectral energy distribution of HD 81032 for the presence of an infrared colour excess using the 2MASS JHK and IRAS photometry, but found no significant excess in any band abovethe normal values expected for a star with this spectral type. We have also analyzed the X-ray emission properties of this star using data obtained by the ROSAT X-ray observatory during its All-Sky Survey phase. An X-ray flare of about 12 hours duration was detected during the two days of X-ray coverage obtained for this star. Its X-ray spectrum, while only containing 345 counts, is inconsistent with a single-temperature component solar-abundance coronal plasma model, but implies either the presence of two or more plasma components, non-solar abundances, or a combination of both of these properties. All of the above properties of HD 81032 suggest that it is a newly identified, evolved RS CVn binary.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for the publication in JAp

    The development of novel glucocorticoid receptor antagonists: from rational chemical design to therapeutic efficacy in metabolic disease models

    Glucocorticoids regulate numerous processes in human physiology, but deregulated or excessive glucocorticoid receptor (GR) signaling contributes to the development of various pathologies including metabolic syndrome. For this reason, GR antagonists have considerable therapeutic value. Yet, the only GR antagonist that is clinically approved to date - mifepristone - exhibits cross-reactivity with other nuclear steroid receptors like the progesterone receptor. In this study, we set out to identify novel selective GR antagonists by combining rational chemical design with an unbiased in vitro and in vivo screening approach. Using this pipeline, we were able to identify CORT125329 as the compound with the best overall profile from our octahydro series of novel GR antagonists, and demonstrated that CORT125329 does not exhibit cross-reactivity with the progesterone receptor. Further in vivo testing showed beneficial activities of CORT125329 in models for excessive corticosterone exposure and short- and long-term high-fat diet-induced metabolic complications. Upon CORT125329 treatment, most metabolic parameters that deteriorated upon high-fat diet feeding were similarly improved in male and female mice, confirming activity in both sexes. However, some sexually dimorphic effects were observed including male-specific antagonism of GR activity in brown adipose tissue and female-specific lipid lowering activities after short-term CORT125329 treatment. Remarkably, CORT125329 exhibits beneficial metabolic effects despite its lack of GR antagonism in white adipose tissue. Rather, we propose that CORT125329 treatment restores metabolic activity in brown adipose tissue by stimulating lipolysis, mitochondrial activity and thermogenic capacity. In summary, we have identified CORT125329 as a selective GR antagonist with strong beneficial activities in metabolic disease models, paving the way for further clinical investigation.Nephrolog

    Follow-Up Near-infrared Spectroscopy of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies observed by ISO

    We present low resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of an unbiased sample of 24 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), selected from samples previously observed spectroscopically in the mid-infrared with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Qualitatively, the near-infrared spectra resemble those of starbursts. Only in one ULIRG, IRAS 04114-5117E, do we find spectroscopic evidence for AGN activity. The spectroscopic classification in the near-infrared is in very good agreement with the mid-infrared one. For a subset of our sample for which extinction corrections can be derived from Pa-alpha and Br-gamma, we find rather high Pa-alpha luminosities, in accordance with the powering source of these galaxies being star formation.[Fe] emission is strong in ULIRGs and may be linked to starburst and superwind activity. Additionally, our sample includes two unusual objects. The first, IRAS F00183-7111, exhibits extreme [Fe] emission and the second, IRAS F23578-5307, is according to our knowledge one of the most luminous infrared galaxies in H2 rotation-vibration emission.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (12 pages, 4 figures).     A multi-wavelength census of stellar contents in the young cluster NGC 1624

    We present a comprehensive multi-wavelength analysis of the young cluster NGC 1624 associated with the H II region Sh2-212 using optical UBVRI photometry, optical spectroscopy and GMRT radio continuum mapping along with the near-infrared (NIR) JHK archival data. Reddening E(B-V) and distance to the cluster are estimated to be 0.76 - 1.00 mag and 6.0 +/- 0.8 kpc, respectively. Present analysis yields a spectral class of O6.5V for the main ionizing source of the region. The distribution of YSOs in (J-H)/ (H-K) NIR colour-colour diagram shows that a majority of them have A_V ≤\le 4 mag. Based on the NIR excess characteristics, we identified 120 probable candidate YSOs in this region which yield a disk frequency of ~ 20%. These YSOs are found to have an age spread of ~ 5 Myr with a median age of ~ 2-3 Myr and a mass range of ~ 0.1 - 3.0 M⊙M_\odot. A significant number of YSOs are located close to the cluster centre and we detect an enhanced density of reddened YSOs located/projected close to the molecular clumps at the periphery of NGC 1624. This indicates that the YSOs located within the cluster core are relatively older in comparison to those located/projected near the clumps. From the radio continuum flux, spectral class of the ionizing source of the ultra-compact H II region at the periphery of Sh2-212 is estimated to be ~ B0.5V. From optical data, slope of the mass function (MF) Γ\Gamma, in the mass range 1.2≤M/M⊙<271.2 \le M/M_{\odot}<27 can be represented by a single power law with a slope -1.18 +/- 0.10, whereas the NIR data in the mass range 0.65≤M/M⊙<270.65 \le M/M_{\odot}<27 yields Γ\Gamma = -1.31 +/- 0.15. The slope of the K-band luminosity function (KLF) for the cluster is found to be 0.30 +/- 0.06 which is in agreement with the values obtained for other young clusters.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    On the radio emitting high mass X-ray binary LS 5039

    We present new optical - near-IR spectroscopic and photometric observations of the newly discovered galactic microquasar LS 5039, which indicate a classification for the mass donor in the system of O6.5V((f)). Optical spectroscopy and photometry shows no variability over a timescale of years, and we find no evidence of modulation by, or emission from the compact companion in these data. However significant photometric variability (~0.4 mag) is present in the H and K bands between 1995-2000. Such variability has been observed in other radio bright X-ray binaries where it has been attributed to synchrotron emission from the jet. However, given the non-thermal spectral index of the radio emission in LS 5039 this explanation appears unlikely, predicting a near-IR flux ~3 orders of magnitude too small to contribute significantly at such wavelengths. Nightly optical photometry over a 21 day period between 2000 May-June reveals variability at a level of a few hundredths of a magnitude, with no periodicity or long term trend visible. Likewise, while the radio lightcurves show moderate variability ( per cent of the mean flux density) we find no evidence of periodic modulation - Monte Carlo simulations constrain any such periodic variability to <4 per cent modulation at 2.25 GHz. The differences in behaviour between LS 5039 and Cygnus X-1 - the most closely related radio emitting High Mass X-ray Binary - are likely to be a result of the weaker stellar wind and probable greater orbital separation of LS 5039 compared to Cyg X-1
