Slow relaxation in granular compaction
Experimental studies show that the density of a vibrated granular material
evolves from a low density initial state into a higher density final steady
state. The relaxation towards the final density value follows an inverse
logarithmic law. We propose a simple stochastic adsorption-desorption process
which captures the essential mechanism underlying this remarkably slow
relaxation. As the system approaches its final state, a growing number of beads
have to be rearranged to enable a local density increase. In one dimension,
this number grows as , and the density increase rate is
drastically reduced by a factor . Consequently, a logarithmically slow

Segregation by thermal diffusion of an intruder in a moderately dense granular fluid
A solution of the inelastic Enskog equation that goes beyond the weak
dissipation limit and applies for moderate densities is used to determine the
thermal diffusion factor of an intruder immersed in a dense granular gas under
gravity. This factor provides a segregation criterion that shows the transition
between the Brazil-nut effect (BNE) and the reverse Brazil-nut effect (RBNE) by
varying the parameters of the system (masses, sizes, density and coefficients
of restitution). The form of the phase-diagrams for the BNE/RBNE transition
depends sensitively on the value of gravity relative to the thermal gradient,
so that it is possible to switch between both states for given values of the
parameters of the system. Two specific limits are considered with detail: (i)
absence of gravity, and (ii) homogeneous temperature. In the latter case, after
some approximations, our results are consistent with previous theoretical
results derived from the Enskog equation. Our results also indicate that the
influence of dissipation on thermal diffusion is more important in the absence
of gravity than in the opposite limit. The present analysis extends previous
theoretical results derived in the dilute limit case [V. Garz\'o, Europhys.
Lett. {\bf 75}, 521 (2006)] and is consistent with the findings of some recent

Influence of the detector's temperature on the quantum Zeno effect
In this paper we study the quantum Zeno effect using the irreversible model
of the measurement. The detector is modeled as a harmonic oscillator
interacting with the environment. The oscillator is subjected to the force,
proportional to the energy of the measured system. We use the Lindblad-type
master equation to model the interaction with the environment. The influence of
the detector's temperature on the quantum Zeno effect is obtained. It is shown
that the quantum Zeno effect becomes stronger (the jump probability decreases)
when the detector's temperature increases
Surface Instability of Icicles
Quantitatively-unexplained stationary waves or ridges often encircle icicles.
Such waves form when roughly 0.1 mm-thick layers of water flow down the icicle.
These waves typically have a wavelength of 1cm approximately independent of
external temperature, icicle thickness, and the volumetric rate of water flow.
In this paper we show that these waves can not be obtained by naive
Mullins-Sekerka instability, but are caused by a quite new surface instability

Challenges of improving the evidence base in smaller surgical specialties, as highlighted by a systematic review of gastroschisis management.
Objective To identify methods of improving the evidence base in smaller surgical specialties, using a systematic review of gastroschisis management as an example. Background Operative primary fascial closure (OPFC), and silo placement with staged reduction and delayed closure (SR) are the most commonly used methods of gastroschisis closure. Relative merits of each are unclear. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed comparing outcomes following OPFC and SR in infants with simple gastroschisis. Primary outcomes of interest were mortality, length of hospitalization and time to full enteral feeding. Results 751 unique articles were identified. Eight met the inclusion criteria. None were randomized controlled trials. 488 infants underwent OPFC and 316 underwent SR. Multiple studies were excluded because they included heterogeneous populations and mixed intervention groups. Length of stay was significantly longer in the SR group (mean difference 8.97 days, 95% CI 2.14–15.80 days), as was number of post-operative days to complete enteral feeding (mean difference 7.19 days, 95% CI 2.01–12.36 days). Mortality was not statistically significantly different, although the odds of death were raised in the SR group (OR 1.96, 95% CI 0.71–5.35). Conclusions Despite showing some benefit of OPFC over SR, our results are tempered by the low quality of the available studies, which were small and variably reported. Coordinating research through a National Paediatric Surgical Trials Unit could alleviate many of these problems. A similar national approach could be used in other smaller surgical specialties
Development of a gastroschisis core outcome set
Objective Outcome reporting heterogeneity impedes identification of gold-standard treatments for children born with gastroschisis. Use of core outcome sets (COS) in research reduces outcome reporting heterogeneity and ensures that studies are relevant to patients. The aim of this study was to develop a gastroschisis COS. Design and Setting Systematic reviews and stakeholder nomination were used to identify candidate outcomes that were subsequently prioritised by key stakeholders in a three-phase online Delphi process and face-face consensus meeting using a nine-point Likert scale. In phases two and three of the Delphi process, participants were shown graphical and numerical representations of their own, and all panels scores for each outcome respectively and asked to review their previous score in light of this information. Outcomes were carried forward to the consensus meeting if prioritised by two or three stakeholder panels in the third phase of the Delphi process. The COS was formed from outcomes with consensus meeting scores ≥70% 7–9 and <15% 1-3. Results 71 participants (84%) completed all phases of the Delphi process, during which, 87 outcomes were assessed. Eight outcomes, mortality, sepsis, growth, number of operations, severe gastrointestinal complication, time on parenteral nutrition, liver disease and quality of life for the child met criteria for inclusion in the COS. Conclusions Eight outcomes have been included in the gastroschisis COS as a result of their importance to key stakeholders. Implementing use of the COS will increase the potential for identification of gold standard treatments for the management of children born with gastroschisis
Developing Ontologies withing Decentralized Settings
This chapter addresses two research questions: “How should a well-engineered methodology facilitate the development of ontologies within communities of practice?” and “What methodology should be used?” If ontologies are to be developed by communities then the ontology development life cycle should be better understood within this context. This chapter presents the Melting Point (MP), a proposed new methodology for developing ontologies within decentralised settings. It describes how MP was developed by taking best practices from other methodologies, provides details on recommended steps and recommended processes, and compares MP with alternatives. The methodology presented here is the product of direct first-hand experience and observation of biological communities of practice in which some of the authors have been involved. The Melting Point is a methodology engineered for decentralised communities of practice for which the designers of technology and the users may be the same group. As such, MP provides a potential foundation for the establishment of standard practices for ontology engineering
Utilising social commerce information sharing in the persuasion knowledge process and brand co-creation: A probabilistic analysis approach
This study examines the impact of persuasion knowledge (PK) and brand community attachment on the links between social commerce information sharing and brand co-creation, brand advocacy, and consumer resistance to switching brands. The moderating role of content richness and trustworthiness on the effect of PK is also tested. We employ Partial-Least Square Regression to analyse the data and improved the model robustness by applying probabilistic analysis techniques. De opnamelokaties van tv-detectives genieten een toenemende populariteit onder toeristen. In dit artikel wordt, op basis van een tekstuele analyse van ‘Baantjer’, ‘Inspector Morse’ en ‘Wallander’, onderzocht welke inhoudelijke kenmerken van deze tv-detectives mogelijk als ‘trigger’ fungeren. Uit de analyse blijkt dat plaats en beweging een centrale rol vervullen binnen de narratieve structuur van dit genre. Door zelf de lokaties te bezoeken, kunnen toeristen het spoor nalopen van hun geliefde detective om aldaar, vanuit een veilige positie, tijdelijk op te gaan in het schemergebied tussen fictie en werkelijkheid
