Die Beiträge im zweiten Band der Schriftenreihe Kulturelles Erbe in der digitalen Welt der Deutschen Digitalen Bibliothek zeigen auf, wie in Deutschland mit seiner föderalen Ordnung die Vermittlung und letztlich Vernetzung des kulturellen Erbes über das Internet angegangen wird. In ihnen finden sich Informationen zum organisatorischen Aufbau und der Infrastruktur der Digitalisierung und zu Kooperationen und politischen Rahmenbedingungen. Die Beiträge setzen die politische Agenda ins Verhältnis zum tatsächlich Erreichten, beschreiben den Stand der Umsetzung, geben Auskunft über Digitalisierungsstellen, Projekte und deren Koordination, beschreiben die institutionellen Zuständigkeiten, erläutern Portale und die Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Digitalen Bibliothek, enthalten Ausführungen zur Langzeitarchivierung: Und am Ende wird jeweils auch ein Ausblick gewagt. Beispiele für Konzepte außerhalb Deutschlands runden das Bild ab. Waren es im ersten Band Der Vergangenheit eine Zukunft Fragen nach öffentlicher Verantwortung, gesellschaftlichen Aufgaben und privatem Engagement, stehen nun die Strategien der Bundesländer für das kulturelle Erbe in der digitalen Welt im Vordergrund. Die Publikation liegt als Druck sowie frei verfügbar (Open Access) als EPUB, MOBI und PDF vor.The contributions in the second volume of the series "Cultural Heritage in the Digital World" published by the German Digital Library show how in Germany, with its federal order, the mediation and ultimate networking of the cultural heritage is made via the Internet. The contributions provide information on the organizational structure and the infrastructure of digitization and on cooperation and political conditions. They show the political agenda in relation to the actual achievements. Teh status of the implementation is described. Warum dieses Buch

Das Recht, insbesondere das Urheberrecht, hat große Auswirkungen darauf, was von dem großen Reichtum unseres kulturellen Erbes im kollektiven Gedächtnis verbleibt. In der digitalen Welt, in der alles Kopie und damit – im urheberrechtlichen Sinne – Vervielfältigung ist, ist auch jede Nutzung des kulturellen Erbes urheberrechtlich relevant. Auf der anderen Seite leben wir in Zeiten einer rasanten Medienentwicklung und eines Überflusses an Informationen, Bildern, Filmen und Texten. Umso größer ist die Herausforderung, die Erinnerung an unser kulturelles Erbe wachzuhalten. Es ist also eine Frage der kulturellen Selbstbehauptung, wie die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen für den Umgang mit unserem kulturellen Erbe gesetzt werden. Was nicht online gefunden werden kann, wird zunehmend verschwinden. Insofern können die Auswirkungen eines unausgewogenen Urheberrechts, das das kulturelle Erbe nicht ausreichend berücksichtigt, dramatisch sein. Dieses Buch versammelt verschiedene Vorschläge und Überlegungen, wie die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen geändert werden können, um eine stärkere Präsenz auch des urheberrechtlich geschützten kulturellen Erbes im Netz zu ermöglichen. This is why the challenge of keeping the memory of our cultural heritage alive is all the greater. It is therefore a question of cultural self-assertion how the legal framework conditions for dealing with our cultural heritage are set. What cannot be found online will increasingly disappear. In this respect, the effects of an unbalanced copyright law that does not take sufficient account of cultural heritage can be dramatic. This book brings together various proposals and reflections on how to change the legal framework in order to increase the presence of copyrighted cultural heritage on the Internet. These proposals are written by experts from memory institutions, law and politics, and thus by authors who are well acquainted with the international framework conditions and copyright discourse in Germany

An der internationalen Open-Access-Woche 2016 vom 24.-28. Oktober war der KOBV erstmalig mit einem Online „Publishing Event“ beteiligt. An fünf aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen erschien täglich eine Sonderausgabe des KOBV- Newsletters zu ausgewählten Open-Access-Themen. Die einzelnen Beiträge sind in dieser Sonderedition als Online-Reader zusammengestellt. Der aktuelle Diskussionsstand zum jeweiligen Thema wird von Expertinnen und Experten in kurzen Übersichtsartikeln vorgestellt und mit Praxistipps ergänzt. Zielgruppe sind vor allem Bibliothekare und Bibliothekarinnen, die sich einen schnellen Überblick zu Open Access verschaffen wollen

The prevalence of Giardia infection in dogs and cats, a systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence studies from stool samples

Giardia has a wide range of host species and is a common cause of diarrhoeal disease in humans and animals. Companion animals are able to transmit a range of zoonotic diseases to their owners including giardiasis, but the size of this risk is not well known. The aim of this study was to analyse giardiasis prevalence rates in dogs and cats worldwide using a systematic search approach. Meta-analysis enabled to describe associations between Giardia prevalence and various confounding factors. Pooled prevalence rates were 15.2% (95% CI 13.8-16.7%) for dogs and 12% (95% CI 9.2-15.3%) for cats. However, there was very high heterogeneity between studies. Meta-regression showed that the diagnostic method used had a major impact on reported prevalence with studies using ELISA, IFA and PCR reporting prevalence rates between 2.6 and 3.7 times greater than studies using microscopy. Conditional negative binomial regression found that symptomatic animals had higher prevalence rates ratios (PRR) than asymptomatic animals 1.61 (95% CI 1.33-1.94) in dogs and 1.94 (95% CI 1.47-2.56) in cats. Giardia was much more prevalent in young animals. For cats >6 months, PRR=0.47 (0.42-0.53) and in dogs of the same age group PRR=0.36 (0.32-0.41). Additionally, dogs kept as pets were less likely to be positive (PRR=0.56 (0.41-0.77)) but any difference in cats was not significant. Faecal excretion of Giardia is common in dogs and slightly less so in cats. However, the exact rates depend on the diagnostic method used, the age and origin of the animal. What risk such endemic colonisation poses to human health is still unclear as it will depend not only on prevalence rates but also on what assemblages are excreted and how people interact with their pets

Host-Adaptation of Francisella tularensis Alters the Bacterium's Surface-Carbohydrates to Hinder Effectors of Innate and Adaptive Immunity

The gram-negative bacterium Francisella tularensis survives in arthropods, fresh water amoeba, and mammals with both intracellular and extracellular phases and could reasonably be expected to express distinct phenotypes in these environments. The presence of a capsule on this bacterium has been controversial with some groups finding such a structure while other groups report that no capsule could be identified. Previously we reported in vitro culture conditions for this bacterium which, in contrast to typical methods, yielded a bacterial phenotype that mimics that of the bacterium's mammalian, extracellular phase.SDS-PAGE and carbohydrate analysis of differentially-cultivated F. tularensis LVS revealed that bacteria displaying the host-adapted phenotype produce both longer polymers of LPS O-antigen (OAg) and additional HMW carbohydrates/glycoproteins that are reduced/absent in non-host-adapted bacteria. Analysis of wildtype and OAg-mutant bacteria indicated that the induced changes in surface carbohydrates involved both OAg and non-OAg species. To assess the impact of these HMW carbohydrates on the access of outer membrane constituents to antibody we used differentially-cultivated bacteria in vitro to immunoprecipitate antibodies directed against outer membrane moieties. We observed that the surface-carbohydrates induced during host-adaptation shield many outer membrane antigens from binding by antibody. Similar assays with normal mouse serum indicate that the induced HMW carbohydrates also impede complement deposition. Using an in vitro macrophage infection assay, we find that the bacterial HMW carbohydrate impedes TLR2-dependent, pro-inflammatory cytokine production by macrophages. Lastly we show that upon host-adaptation, the human-virulent strain, F. tularensis SchuS4 also induces capsule production with the effect of reducing macrophage-activation and accelerating tularemia pathogenesis in mice.F. tularensis undergoes host-adaptation which includes production of multiple capsular materials. These capsules impede recognition of bacterial outer membrane constituents by antibody, complement, and Toll-Like Receptor 2. These changes in the host-pathogen interface have profound implications for pathogenesis and vaccine development
