Territory branding as a strategy for rural development: experiences from Italy

    Get PDF
Many rural areas make increasing recourse to the use of territorial marks to achieve a development goal, foster reputation as well as preserve their identity, their cultural, social and environmental resources. Despite the growing interest of the literature on the topic, territorial marks have so far been analysed as individual tools, while in many areas a strategy of territory branding can be recognised. Drawing on research from two Italian case studies, the paper shows which are the pillars of such a strategy, which are the territorial conditions allowing its success and which effects this strategy produces under the economic, social, cultural and environmental point of view.

Analytical investigation of the dynamics of tethered constellations in Earth orbit, phase 2

This Quarterly Report deals with the deployment maneuver of a single-axis, vertical constellation with three masses. A new, easy to handle, computer code that simulates the two-dimensional dynamics of the constellation has been implemented. This computer code is used for designing control laws for the deployment maneuver that minimizes the acceleration level of the low-g platform during the maneuver

    New Points on Curves

Let K be a field and let L/K be a finite extension. Let X/K be a scheme of finite type. A point of X(L) is said to be new if it does not belong to the union of X(F), when F runs over all proper subextensions of L. Fix now an integer g>0 and a finite separable extension L/K of degree d. We investigate in this article whether there exists a smooth proper geometrically connected curve of genus g with a new point in X(L). We show for instance that if K is infinite of characteristic different from 2 and g is bigger or equal to [d/4], then there exist infinitely many hyperelliptic curves X/K of genus g, pairwise non-isomorphic over the algebraic closure of K, and with a new point in X(L). When d is between 1 and 10, we show that there exist infinitely many elliptic curves X/K with pairwise distinct j-invariants and with a new point in X(L).Comment: To appear in Acta Arithmetic

Resolutions of ideals of fat points with support in a hyperplane

    Get PDF
Our results concern minimal graded free resolutions of fat point ideals for points in a hyperplane. Suppose, for example, that I(m,d) is the ideal defining r given points of multiplicity m in the projective space P^d. Assume that the given points lie in a hyperplane P^{d-1} in P^d, and that the ground field k is algebraically closed of characteristic 0. We give an explicit minimal graded free resolution of I(m,d) in k[P^d] in terms of the minimal graded free resolutions of the ideals I(j,d-1) in k[P^{d-1}] with j < m+1. As a corollary, we give the following formula for the Poincare polynomial P_{m,d} of I(m,d) in terms of the Poincare polynomials P_{j,d-1} of I(j,d-1): P_{m,d} = (1 + XT)(\Sigma_{0<j\le m} T^{m-j}(P_{j,d-1} - 1)) + 1 + XT^m.Comment: 10 pages; to appear in Proc.
