    R&D and productivity growth: evidence from firm-level data for the Netherlands

    This article presents evidence on the links between R&D and productivity for manufacturing firms in the Netherlands. The study provides estimates of the output elasticity of the R&D stock and of the private rate of return to R&D. The article applies the methodology used by Hall and Mairesse (1995) to a panel dataset of R&D performing firms in the Netherlands, with some minor modifications. First, a correction for sample selection bias is used in an attempt to adjust the results for possible bias arising when the basic methodology is applied to the R&D survey for the Netherlands. Next, more complete adjustment is made to the resource input data to correct for the ’double counting’ of R&D inputs. Lastly, an attempt is made to correct for heteroskedasticity in the error term of the basic model. The study makes use of linked files of the R&D surveys and the annual production statistics collected by Statistics Netherlands for the years 1985, 1989, and 1993

    Heterosexual interactions of pairs of laboratory-housed stumptail macaques (Macaca arctoides) under continuous observation with closed-circuit video recording

    Female-male interaction of heterosexual pairs of stumptail macaques, housed together continuously, was studied 24 hr per day using closed-circuit video recording. Two pairs were studied for approximately 2 months each. Although no generalizations can be made from such a small sample, no aspect of behavioral interaction varied significantly with the stage of the menstrual cycle of the female partner. Copulation occurred regularly but only during the daylight hours. Both pairs showed several peak ejaculation days (5-21 ejaculations/day), which were distributed throughout the entire menstrual cycle. In general, the highest number of ejaculations was observed to occur when the animals were put together either for the first time or following a separation of a few days. In one pair the female became pregnant, and from the fifth week of pregnancy onward there was a gradual increase in male aggression, coinciding with a decrease in male sexual and grooming behavior. In a second study eight different pairs were observed during the first day together and male copulatory behavior was studied. Two patterns of copulatory behavior could be discerned: pairs displaying a high number of ejaculations (19-38) and pairs displaying a low number of ejaculations (4-8). With regard to the interejaculatory interval (IEI), the male stumptail appeared to be unique. In contrast to what has been reported for other mammals, i.e., a steady increase in IEI with subsequent ejaculations, the stumptail showed increasing IEIs only during the first three to four, as well as between the last, ejaculations; in between, the IEI remained relatively constant. The maximum number of consecutive ejaculations observed was 38, displayed during a 10-hr time period (mean (± SEM)IEI, 12.9 ± 3.5 min)

    Land Use Regression Models for Ultrafine Particles in Six European Areas

    Long-term ultrafine particle (UFP) exposure estimates at a fine spatial scale are needed for epidemiological studies. Land use regression (LUR) models were developed and evaluated for six European areas based on repeated 30 min monitoring following standardized protocols. In each area; Basel (Switzerland), Heraklion (Greece), Amsterdam, Maastricht, and Utrecht ("The Netherlands"), Norwich (United Kingdom), Sabadell (Spain), and Turin (Italy), 160-240 sites were monitored to develop LUR models by supervised stepwise selection of GIS predictors. For each area and all areas combined, 10 models were developed in stratified random selections of 90% of sites. UFP prediction robustness was evaluated with the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) at 31-50 external sites per area. Models from Basel and The Netherlands were validated against repeated 24 h outdoor measurements. Structure and model R2 of local models were similar within, but varied between areas (e.g., 38-43% Turin; 25-31% Sabadell). Robustness of predictions within areas was high (ICC 0.73-0.98). External validation R2 was 53% in Basel and 50% in The Netherlands. Combined area models were robust (ICC 0.93-1.00) and explained UFP variation almost equally well as local models. In conclusion, robust UFP LUR models could be developed on short-term monitoring, explaining around 50% of spatial variance in longer-term measurements

    Development of West-European PM2.5 and NO2 land use regression models incorporating satellite-derived and chemical transport modelling data

    Satellite-derived (SAT) and chemical transport model (CTM) estimates of PM2.5 and NO2 are increasingly used in combination with Land Use Regression (LUR) models. We aimed to compare the contribution of SAT and CTM data to the performance of LUR PM2.5 and NO2 models for Europe. Four sets of models, all including local traffic and land use variables, were compared (LUR without SAT or CTM, with SAT only, with CTM only, and with both SAT and CTM). LUR models were developed using two monitoring data sets: PM2.5 and NO2 ground level measurements from the European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE) and from the European AIRBASE network. LUR PM2.5 models including SAT and SAT+CTM explained ~60% of spatial variation in measured PM2.5 concentrations, substantially more than the LUR model without SAT and CTM (adjR(2): 0.33-0.38). For NO2 CTM improved prediction modestly (adjR(2): 0.58) compared to models without SAT and CTM (adjR(2): 0.47-0.51). Both monitoring networks are capable of producing models explaining the spatial variance over a large study area. SAT and CTM estimates of PM2.5 and NO2 significantly improved the performance of high spatial resolution LUR models at the European scale for use in large epidemiological studies

    Environmental, Dietary, Maternal, and Fetal Predictors of Bulky DNA Adducts in Cord Blood: A European Mother–Child Study (NewGeneris)

    Background:Bulky DNA adducts reflect genotoxic exposures, have been associated with lower birth weight, and may predict cancer risk.Objective:We selected factors known or hypothesized to affect in utero adduct formation and repair and examined their associations with adduct levels in neonates.Methods:Pregnant women from Greece, Spain, England, Denmark, and Norway were recruited in 2006–2010. Cord blood bulky DNA adduct levels were measured by the 32P-postlabeling technique (n = 511). Diet and maternal characteristics were assessed via questionnaires. Modeled exposures to air pollutants and drinking-water disinfection by-products, mainly trihalomethanes (THMs), were available for a large proportion of the study population.Results:Greek and Spanish neonates had higher adduct levels than the northern European neonates [median, 12.1 (n = 179) vs. 6.8 (n = 332) adducts per 108 nucleotides, p < 0.001]. Residence in southern European countries, higher maternal body mass index, delivery by cesarean section, male infant sex, low maternal intake of fruits rich in vitamin C, high intake of dairy products, and low adherence to healthy diet score were statistically significantly associated with higher adduct levels in adjusted models. Exposure to fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide was associated with significantly higher adducts in the Danish subsample only.
