Advisor and Student Experiences of Summer Support for College-intending, Low-income high school graduates
Summer melt occurs when students who have been accepted to college and intend to enroll fail to matriculate in college in the fall semester after high school. A high rate of summer melt contributes to the lower postsecondary attainment rates of low-income students, in particular. This article presents qualitative findings from two interventions intended to reduce summer melt among low-income, urban high school graduates who had been accepted to college and indicated their intention to enroll. Results from student and counselor surveys, interviews, and focus groups point to a web of personal and contextual factors that collectively influence students' college preparation behaviors and provide insight into the areas of summer supports from which students like these can benefit. The data fit an ecological perspective, in which personal, institutional, societal, and temporal factors interact to affect students' behaviors and outcomes. A model of summer intervention shows that obstacles in completing college financing and informational tasks can lead college-intending students to re-open the question of where or whether to attend college in the fall after high school graduation. Given the pressure of concerns about how to actualize their offer of admission, students rarely engage in the anticipatory socialization activities that might help them make optimal transitions into college
Inside the Black Box of Text-Message College Advising
Making college access and success more equitable at a national scale requires alternatives to intensive in-person modes of pre-college advising. Text-message advising campaigns are a promising intervention model for delivering college application and financial aid assistance affordably to large populations of college-intending, low-income students. College outcome results from a recent series of very large text-message programs have been disappointing however. Going inside the black box of text-message advising to understand why and how students engage in text-messaging programs can help explain program effects and inform the design of future virtual-advising programs. This study uses text mining techniques to investigate the content of 342,000 student text messages from a national text-message advising program. In the program under study, over 30,000 college-intending students from 745 high schools received two-way college advising for 15 months via text messaging with professional advisors. Data mining of the student text messages indicated that students needed substantial individualized assistance and that they used texting primarily for navigating discrete tasks related to testing, applications, and financial aid. In addition to providing substantive findings about college access advising, the study method illustrates how big data tools can extract meaning from large bodies of unstructured text like those generated by the growing number of text-message educational interventions
The Student Experience of Two-Way Text-Message College Advising: A First Glimpse
This study examines the experiences of students enrolled in a text-messaging advising program in order to understand the conditions for impact in this rapidly proliferating intervention model. The program under study was a 15-state text-messaging college advising trial that attempted to increase the college enrollment outcomes of over 30,000 students who attended U.S. high schools with large percentages of low-income students. Data came from 3600 advisees who responded to text-message queries about their experiences in the texting program. The content of the queries was informed by focus group responses from 18 program participants. Results indicate that text-message college advising offered students a combination of information, assistance, nudges, and emotional support that many students perceived kept them on track for a successful college process. Text-message advisees who were disengaged or critical of the program mistakenly believed that the advising was fully automated, had sufficient support elsewhere, or were not receiving the texts because of incorrect contact information. Study findings suggest that text messaging is best suited to providing advising on financial aid and other topics requiring specific information and concrete tasks. Students’ reports of their experience in the program provide potential explanations for the mixed results that are beginning to be reported for texting programs and suggest implications for more effective designs. The study is useful as one of the first investigations of student responses to virtual advising, but its modest response rates suggest the need for new approaches to collecting evaluation data from participants in text-message advising campaigns
Becoming Inclusive Teacher Educators: Self-Study as a Professional Learning Tool
This article describes a self-study inquiry project designed and conducted by a self-study group at a Faculty of Education in an Atlantic Canadian University. The seven-member group engaged in a collaborative self-study inquiry while adopting Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in their teacher education practices and documented their professional learning. This yearlong self-study inquiry project encompassed several data collection methods to examine inclusive practices of self-study group members, including personal reflections, minutes of weekly meetings, artifacts, and field notes. This article focuses on how UDL provided a means for three group members to critically examine their inclusive practices at the beginning, during, and following the collaborative self-study inquiry. Using a case study methodology, self-study cases of these three faculty members—Angela, Ryan, and Sarah (Pseudonyms)—were developed. The cases reported on the journey of these faculty members in improving their inclusive practice through their engagement in self-study
Extension into the entrance channel of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase—Crystallography and enhanced solubility
Non-nucleoside inhibitors of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (HIV-RT) are reported that feature extension into the entrance channel near Glu138. Complexes of the parent anilinylpyrimidine 1 and the morpholinoethoxy analog 2j with HIV-RT have received crystallographic characterization confirming the designs. Measurement of aqueous solubilities of 2j, 2k, the parent triazene 2a, and other NNRTIs demonstrate profound benefits for addition of the morpholinyl substituent.Fil: Bollini, Mariela. Insights into the influence of solvent polarity on the crystallization of poly(ethylene oxide) spin-coated thin films via in situ grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering
Controlling polymer thin-film morphology and crystallinity is crucial for a wide range of applications, particularly in thin-film organic electronic devices. In this work, the crystallization behavior of a model polymer, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), during spin-coating is studied. PEO films were spun-cast from solvents possessing different polarities (chloroform, THF, and methanol) and probed via in situ grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The crystallization behavior was found to follow the solvent polarity order (where chloroform chloroform > methanol). When spun-cast from nonpolar chloroform, crystallization largely followed Avrami kinetics, resulting in the formation of morphologies comprising large spherulites. PEO solutions cast from more polar solvents (THF and methanol) do not form well-defined highly crystalline morphologies and are largely amorphous with the presence of small crystalline regions. The difference in morphological development of PEO spun-cast from polar solvents is attributed to clustering phenomena that inhibit polymer crystallization. This work highlights the importance of considering individual components of polymer solubility, rather than simple total solubility, when designing processing routes for the generation of morphologies with optimum crystallinities or morphologies
A Partial Response to Reintroduced Chemotherapy in a Resistant Small Cell Lung Cancer Patient after Priming with RRx-001
As an exceedingly recalcitrant and highly aggressive tumor type without Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment or a known cure, the prognosis of recurrent extensive stage platinum-resistant/refractory small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is worse than other types of lung cancer, and many other tumor types, given a response rate of less than 10% and an overall survival of less than six months. It was broadly classified into three groups based on the initial response to cisplatin/etoposide therapy, platinum-refractory, platinum-resistant, and platinum-sensitive, extensive stage SCLC inevitably relapses, at which point the only standard options are to rechallenge with the first-line chemotherapeutic regimen in the case of sensitive disease or to start the topoisomerase I inhibitor, topotecan. Sensitive disease is defined by a response to the first-line therapy and a treatment-free interval of at least 90 days, while the definitions of refractory and resistant disease, respectively, are nonresponse to the first-line treatment or relapse within 90 days. As an important predictor of response to the second-line treatment, the clinical cutoff of three months (or two months in some cases) for resistant and sensitive disease, which along with performance status prognostically separates patients into high- and low-risk categories, dictates subsequent management. This case report presents a resistant SCLC patient enrolled on a Phase II clinical trial called QUADRUPLE THREAT (formerly TRIPLE THREAT, NCT02489903) who responded to reintroduced platinum doublets after sequential priming with the resistance-reversing epi-immunotherapeutic agent, RRx-001. In the QUADRUPLE THREAT clinical trial, both during priming with RRx-001 and during sequential treatment with platinum doublets, the patient maintained a good quality of life and performance status.Peer reviewe
