Photometric and spectroscopic variability of the FUor star V582 Aurigae
We carried out BVRI CCD photometric observations in the field of V582 Aur
from 2009 August to 2013 February. We acquired high-, medium-, and
low-resolution spectroscopy of V582 Aur during this period. To study the
pre-outburst variability of the target and construct its historical light
curve, we searched for archival observations in photographic plate collections.
Both CCD and photographic observations were analyzed using a sequence of 14
stars in the field of V582 Aur calibrated in BVRI. The pre-outburst
photographic observations of V582 Aur show low-amplitude light variations
typical of T Tauri stars. Archival photographic observations indicate that the
increase in brightness began in late 1984 or early 1985 and the star reached
the maximum level of brightness at 1986 January. The spectral type of V582 Aur
can be defined as G0I with strong P Cyg profiles of H alpha and Na I D lines,
which are typical of FU Orionis objects. Our BVRI photometric observations show
large amplitude variations V~2.8 mag. during the 3.5 year period of
observations. Most of the time, however, the star remains in a state close to
the maximum brightness. The deepest drop in brightness was observed in the
spring of 2012, when the brightness of the star fell to a level close to the
pre-outburst. The multicolor photometric data show a color reversal during the
minimum in brightness, which is typical of UX Ori variables. The corresponding
spectral observations show strong variability in the profiles and intensities
of the spectral lines (especially H alpha), which indicate significant changes
in the accretion rate. On the basis of photometric monitoring performed over
the past three years, the spectral properties of the maximal light, and the
shape of the long-term light curve, we confirm the affiliation of V582 Aur to

Optical photometric and spectral study of the new FU Orionis object V2493 Cygni (HBC 722)
Aims. We present new results from optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the eruptive pre-main sequence star V2493 Cyg (HBC 722). The object has continued to undergo significant brightness variations over the past few months and is an ideal target for follow-up observations.
Methods. We carried out CCD BVRI photometric observations in the field of V2493 Cyg (âGulf of Mexicoâ) from August 1994 to April 2012, i.e. at the pre-outburst states and during the phases of the outburst. We acquired high, medium, and low resolution spectroscopy of V2493 Cyg during the outburst. To study the pre-outburst variability of the target and construct its historical light curve, we searched for archival observations in photographic plate collections. Both CCD and photographic observations were analyzed using 15 comparison stars in the field of V2493 Cyg.
Results. The pre-outburst photographic and CCD photometric observations of V2493 Cyg show low-amplitude light variations typical of T Tauri stars. The recent photometric data show a slow light decrease from October 2010 to June 2011 followed by an increase in brightness that continued until early 2012. The spectral observations of V2493 Cyg are typical of FU Orionis stars absorption spectra with strong P Cyg profiles of Hα and Na I D lines. On the basis of photometric monitoring performed over the past two years, the spectral properties at the maximal light, as well as the shape of long-term light curves, we confirm that the observed outburst of V2493 Cyg is of FU Orionis type
Multiwavelength Intraday Variability of the BL Lac S5 0716+714
We report results from a 1 week multi-wavelength campaign to monitor the BL
Lac object S5 0716+714 (on December 9-16, 2009). In the radio bands the source
shows rapid (~ (0.5-1.5) day) intra-day variability with peak amplitudes of up
to ~ 10 %. The variability at 2.8 cm leads by about 1 day the variability at 6
cm and 11 cm. This time lag and more rapid variations suggests an intrinsic
contribution to the source's intraday variability at 2.8 cm, while at 6 cm and
11 cm interstellar scintillation (ISS) seems to predominate. Large and
quasi-sinusoidal variations of ~ 0.8 mag were detected in the V, R and I-bands.
The X-ray data (0.2-10 keV) do not reveal significant variability on a 4 day
time scale, favoring reprocessed inverse-Compton over synchrotron radiation in
this band. The characteristic variability time scales in radio and optical
bands are similar. A quasi-periodic variation (QPO) of 0.9 - 1.1 days in the
optical data may be present, but if so it is marginal and limited to 2.2
cycles. Cross-correlations between radio and optical are discussed. The lack of
a strong radio-optical correlation indicates different physical causes of
variability (ISS at long radio wavelengths, source intrinsic origin in the
optical), and is consistent with a high jet opacity and a compact synchrotron
component peaking at ~= 100 GHz in an ongoing very prominent flux density
outburst. For the campaign period, we construct a quasi-simultaneous spectral
energy distribution (SED), including gamma-ray data from the FERMI satellite.
We obtain lower limits for the relativistic Doppler-boosting of delta >= 12-26,

Priorities for action on the social determinants of health : Empirical evidence on the strongest associations with life expectancy in 54 low-income countries, 1990â2012
The WHO Commission on the Social Determinants of Health set out an impressive collection of policy proposals on the social determinants of health. However, a serious weakness for securing implementation is the difficulty for policymakers in identifying priorities for action. The objective of this study is to determine a small set of the most influential determinants using existing data and an empirical approach. 45 Indicators from the World Bank's World Development Indicators are selected to measure attainment for the determinants proposed by the Commission. Panel data models of life expectancy at birth for 54 low-income countries over the years 1990â2012 (1188 country-years) are estimated. Each determinant is subjected to a robustness test using Extreme Bound Analysis, to determine the stability of its estimated impact on life expectancy. For 20 robust and significant determinants the magnitude of association with life expectancy is determined. The largest average increases in life expectancy at 14.5 months per capita is associated with a one standard deviation reduction in HIV prevalence among children, followed by advances in gender equality at 9.4 months. Improvements in life expectancy between 6 and 9 months are associated with agricultural production, political stability, access to clean water and sanitation, good governance, and primary school enrolment. Improvements below 6 months are associated with increases in private health expenditure and overseas development assistance, and control of armed conflict and HIV prevalence among men. There is no evidence that national income, public spending on healthcare and education, secondary schooling, terms of international trade, employment, debt service and relief, out-of-pocket expenditures, agricultural ex- or imports, lifestock production, foreign investment, urbanization or environmental degradation are robustly associated with population health. Results provide support for the relevance of some proposed policies. The findings can inform priorities for future research and policy action on the social determinants of health
