Who Will Benefit from ESOPs?
[Excerpt] In the past decade, the number of worker-owned firms or ESOPs (Employee Stock Ownership Plans) has been growing geometrically. The national law granting tax incentives to ESOPs was passed in 1975, and since then several other pieces of legislation promoting employee ownership have passed at the federal level and in eight state legislatures. As a result of the technical assistance and industrial revenue bonds that some states now provide for ESOP development, and as a result of demonstrable tax, productivity, labor relations and even marketing advantages, business has taken note of the ESOP option. Several thousand ESOPs have started and scores of reports on employee ownership have appeared in the popular press and in business and trade publications

Observation of Geo-Neutrinos
Geo-neutrinos, electron anti-neutrinos produced in beta decays of naturally
occurring radioactive isotopes in the Earth, are a unique direct probe of our
planet's interior. We report the first observation at more than 3 C.L.
of geo-neutrinos, performed with the Borexino detector at Laboratori Nazionali
del Gran Sasso. Anti-neutrinos are detected through the neutron inverse beta
decay reaction. With a 252.6 ton-yr fiducial exposure after all selection cuts,
we detected 9.9^{+4.1}_{-3.4}(^{+14.6}_{-8.2}) geo-neutrino events, with errors
corresponding to a 68.3%(99.73%) C.L. From the profile, the
statistical significance of the Borexino geo-neutrino observation corresponds
to a 99.997% C.L. Our measurement of the geo-neutrinos rate is
3.9^{+1.6}_{-1.3}(^{+5.8}_{-3.2}) events/(100ton-yr). This measurement rejects
the hypothesis of an active geo-reactor in the Earth's core with a power above
3 TW at 95% C.L. The observed prompt positron spectrum above 2.6 MeV is
compatible with that expected from european nuclear reactors (mean base line of
approximately 1000 km). Our measurement of reactor anti-neutrinos excludes the
non-oscillation hypothesis at 99.60% C.L.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 3 table
“At ‘Amen Meals’ It’s Me and God” Religion and Gender: A New Jewish Women’s Ritual
New ritual practices performed by Jewish women can serve as test cases for an examination of the phenomenon of the creation of religious rituals by women. These food-related rituals, which have been termed ‘‘amen meals’’ were developed in Israel beginning in the year 2000 and subsequently spread to Jewish women in Europe and the United States. This study employs a qualitative-ethnographic methodology grounded in participant-observation and in-depth interviews to describe these nonobligatory, extra-halakhic rituals. What makes these rituals stand out is the women’s sense that through these rituals they experience a direct con- nection to God and, thus, can change reality, i.e., bring about jobs, marriages, children, health, and salvation for friends and loved ones. The ‘‘amen’’ rituals also create an open, inclusive woman’s space imbued with strong spiritual–emotional energies that counter the women’s religious marginality. Finally, the purposes and functions of these rituals, including identity building and displays of cultural capital, are considered within a theoretical framework that views ‘‘doing gender’’ and ‘‘doing religion’’ as an integrated experience
