    The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library, JEFF-3.3

    The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides 235^{235}U, 238^{238}U and 239^{239}Pu, on 241^{241}Am and 23^{23}Na, 59^{59}Ni, Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yields, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data for the evaluations. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 performes very well for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy

    A Late Pleistocene-Holocene natural seismograph along the Boconó Fault (Mérida Andes, Venezuela): the moraine-dammed Los Zerpa paleo-lake

    International audiencehe Boconó Fault system is a major active tectonic feature accommodating an important part of the dextral relative motion between the Caribbean Plate and northern South-America. The main trace follows an axial valley running SW-NE within the Mérida Andes (northwestern Venezuela), and crosscuts a series of moraines related to late Pleistocene glaciers developments and retreats, at an altitude between 2600 and 5000 m. Several lakes were generated after the last retreat (between the Late Glacial Maximum –LGM– and the Younger Dryas re-advance), dammed by lateral and frontal moraines. Among them, the Los Zerpa moraine system yielded rich outcrops ranging from an upstream very coarse torrential to deltaic fill, to a downstream clayey-silty horizontal laminated lacustrine accumulation; a fore-set-type heterogeneous "prograding" body links the two sets. The whole system, as well as the surrounding moraines, underwent successive major earthquakes during the Late Glacial/lower Holocene period as evidenced by co-seismic scarps in the moraines, migrations of the outlet, and associated sagponds. Besides active faulting affecting both the moraines and the sedimentary fill, the latter –main purpose of our detail study– exhibits various evidence of strong disturbances which we relate to seismic shaking, such as: i) successive unconformities with co-seismic slips along fractures in the coarse proximal sediments; ii) successive dip changes, discontinuities, and slumps in the foreset-like set; iii) slumps with basal liquefaction, syn-sedimentary fractures, and instantaneous re-sedimentation in the fine-grained laminated accumulation. Lateral (temporal) correlations are established between the successive disturbances detected in the three situations; in turn, these sedimentary events are correlated with seismic activity of the Boconó Fault main trace. Thus, the whole paleo-lake may be considered as a natural seismograph which worked during several thousands years, after the end of the LGM and during early Holocene

    Neel temperature of zinc-blende, MBE-grown MnTe layers: modification by the crystal growth conditions

    International audienceWe present evidence of the influence of the substrate (GaAs and CdZnTe) on the magnetic properties and on the surface structure of (001) zinc-blende MnTe grown by molecular beam epitaxy. High-resolution X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy were employed in the characterisation of the MnTe structure. The temperature dependence of collective spin excitations (magnons) was determined via Raman scattering and subsequently analysed in order to study selected magnetic properties. Differences in both the Néel temperature and magneto-elastic coupling between the MnTe layer and the given substrate were demonstrated, and mechanisms contributing to these effects are discussed

    Interlayer magnetic coupling for Fe/Si multilayers

    The antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer exchange coupling for sputtered Fe/Si multilayers have been studied by magnetometry, wide-angle neutron diffraction, and spin-polarized neutron reflectometry. Ferromagnetic resonance and Raman scattering measurements have been applied for the characterization of the multilayers. To look for a possible modification of exchange coupling when Si is replaced by Ge, similar Fe/Ge multilayers have been prepared by the same technique. No AFM coupling has been found for Fe/Ge system. Present results differ in part from the literature data and suggest an influence of the sample preparation on the details of its magnetic properties

    Elastic Properties of Zinc Blende MnTe

    International audienceThe Brillouin light scattering was used to investigate elastic properties of the zinc blende, MBE-grown MnTe layer that was deposited on a (001) GaAs substrate covered by CdTe buffer layer. The three elastic constants of the zinc blende MnTe, namely c11, c12, and c44, were directly determined for the first time from the frequency of the Rayleigh mode, of the pseudo-surface mode, and of the shear horizontal bulk mode traveling parallel to the layer surface. The value of c11 was checked using the frequency of longitudinal bulk waves propagating at different angles from the normal of the layer plane. This value was also independently determined by results of the folding of acoustic phonons, observed for MnTe/CdTe superlattices by the Raman scattering. Finally, the bulk modulus given by the formula B=(c11+2c12)/3 was determined for zinc blende MnTe by ab initio calculations making use of the density functional theory and atomic pseudopotentials; spin polarization of MnTe was taken into account. A satisfactory agreement between theoretical and experimental values was obtained
