    Maternal obesity in mice exacerbates the allergic inflammatory response in the airways of male offspring

    It was previously demonstrated that non-allergen-sensitized rodents born to mothers exposed to a high-fat diet (HFD) spontaneously develop lower respiratory compliance and higher respiratory resistance. In the present study, we sought to determine if mice born to mothers consuming HFD would exhibit changes in inflammatory response and lung remodeling when subjected to ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization/challenge in adult life. Mice born to dams consuming either HFD or standard chow had increased bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) levels of IL-1 beta, IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, TNF-alpha and TGF-beta 1 after challenge with OVA. IL-4, IL-13, TNF-alpha and TGF-beta 1 levels were further increased in the offspring of HFD-fed mothers. Mice born to obese dams also had exacerbated values of leukocyte infiltration in lung parenchyma, eosinophil and neutrophil counts in BAL, mucus overproduction and collagen deposition. The programming induced by maternal obesity was accompanied by increased expression of miR-155 in peripheral-blood mononuclear cells and reduced miR-133b in trachea and lung tissue in adult life. Altogether, the present data support the unprecedented notion that the progeny of obese mice display exacerbated responses to sensitization/challenge with OVA, leading to the intensification of the morphological changes of lung remodeling.     Partitioning optimization of proteins from Zea mays malt in ATPS PEG 6000/CaCl2

    This work aimed to establish the relationship between the compositions and pH of ATPS PEG 6000/CaCl2 and the proteins partition from maize malt and also to simplify the process optimization in ATPS for a statistical model, established by response surface methodology (RSM). Results showed that these were no influence of pH on the phase diagrams and on the composition of tie line length of PEG 6000/CaCl2 ATPS. SRM analyses showed that elevated pH and larger tie line length were the best conditions for recovering of maize malt proteins. The maximum partition coefficient by PEG 6000/CaCl2 ATPS was about 4.2 and was achieved in ATPS in a single purification step. The theoretical maximum partition coefficient was between 4.1-4.3. The process was very suitable for continuous aqueous two phase purification due to the stability of proteins (e.g. alpha and beta-amylases) and could increase their content into middle.50355756

    What do we learn from Resonance Production in Heavy Ion Collisions?

    Resonances with their short life time and strong coupling to the dense and hot medium are suggested as a signature of the early stage of the fireball created in a heavy ion collision \cite{rap00,lut01,lut02}. The comparison of resonances with different lifetimes and quark contents may give information about time evolution and density and temperature of during the expanding of fireball medium. Resonances in elementary reactions have been measured since 1960. Resonance production in elementary collisions compared with heavy ion collisions where we expect to create a hot and dense medium may show the direct of influence of the medium on the resonances.     Resonance production in heavy ion collisions

    Recent results of resonance production from RHIC at sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV and SPS at sNN=\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 17 GeV are presented and discussed in terms of the evolution and freeze-out conditions of a hot and dense fireball medium. Yields and spectra are compared with thermal model predictions at chemical freeze-out. Deviations in the low transverse momentum region of the resonance spectrum of the hadronic decay channel, suggest a strongly interaction hadronic phase between chemical and kinetic freeze-out. Microscopic models including resonance rescattering and regeneration are able to describe the trend of the data. The magnitude of the regeneration cross sections for different inverse decay channels are discussed. Model calculations which include elastic hadronic interactions between chemical freeze-out and thermal freeze-out based on the K(892)/K and Λ\Lambda(1520)/Λ\Lambda ratios suggest a time between two freeze-outs surfaces of Δτ>\Delta \tau> 4 fm/c. The difference in momentum distributions and yields for the ϕ\phi(1020) resonance reconstructed from the leptonic and hadronic decay channels at SPS energy are discussed taking into account the impact of a hadronic phase and possible medium modifications.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, conference proceedings (SQM2004

    Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns
