    A Decade of Inquiry: The Status of Female Superintendents and Secondary Principals in the High Plains

    This research provides insight into the status of female administrators from a particular geographical area in rural America. Findings reveal that some progress has been made across the United States but there is more effort needed especially in the High Plains states. The numbers of females in ad- ministrative positions in the High Plains states from 1997 to 2007 were col- lected from the Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota Departments of Education. The percentages of females in the High Plains states were com- pared to national numbers for the same time period. There has been a pattern of increased numbers and percentages of females serving as superintendents and secondary principals across the United States and High Plain states. The High Plains states consistently lag behind the United States in the percentage of increase of practicing female superintendents and secondary principals for the decade of 1997 to 2007. When considering the status of female ad- ministrators, numbers do not tell the whole story. Additional aspects studied through qualitative inquiry were the career tracks of these women, the barriers they encountered, and the support systems provided for them

    ICSM CHC White Paper II: Impacts, vulnerability, and understanding risks of climate change for culture and heritage: Contribution of Impacts Group II to the International CoSponsored Meeting on Culture, Heritage and Climate Change

    Climate change is already impacting multiple types of heritage across all regions of the world. Future climate change poses increased risks to heritage globally, including losses and damages to heritage of current and future generations and particularly severe impacts on the intangible cultural heritage of Indigenous communities. Climate change impacts on heritage are not being studied consistently nor systematically, which is reflected in heritage coverage in IPCC assessments and special reports. There is a global imbalance in the number of publications assessing the impact of climate change on heritage between different regions. Regional, national and sub-national disparities are also observed (example of Australia East vs. West). As a result, it is difficult to know if what we know about the impact of climate change on heritage is just a reflection of where the science is funded rather than where or when heritage is being affected by climate change. Impacts of climate change on the broader economic benefits (besides tourism), and social and cultural value of heritage are neither investigated nor reviewed globally and rarely explored regionally or locally. Disparities in climate change / heritage publications appear to be determined by research funding, income inequality (within and between countries), colonial legacy (research ties and relationships between former colonies and colonising countries), legal systems of heritage protection (imbalance between natural and cultural heritage depending on the country/region), local vs. international interest in heritage, the language of publication (focus on English excluding other significant scientific languages such as French, Spanish, or Japanese). Improvement of data reliability and resolution allows for more nuanced reconstructions of impacts of past climatic events, facilitating historically important factors of societal adaptation processes proportional to those changes. Yet they do not provide straightforward solutions for contemporary anthropogenic climate change as the scale of recent changes across the climate system are unprecedented over many centuries to many thousands of years. Alignment of climate change risk terms may facilitate collaboration between climate science and heritage research fields and enhance the likelihood of uptake by large climate change assessments like the IPCC. Innovative methods, especially those which are ideal for assessing social and cultural vulnerability, are needed to integrate the value of intangible cultural heritage with assessments of climate change risk. There is opportunity for climate change / heritage research to embrace transformational, inter- and transdisciplinary, and decolonial principles to address a range of the research and practice challenges as the field matures

    Learning to prescribe - pharmacists' experiences of supplementary prescribing training in England

    Background: The introduction of non-medical prescribing for professions such as pharmacy and nursing in recent years offers additional responsibilities and opportunities but attendant training issues. In the UK and in contrast to some international models, becoming a non-medical prescriber involves the completion of an accredited training course offered by many higher education institutions, where the skills and knowledge necessary for prescribing are learnt. Aims: to explore pharmacists' perceptions and experiences of learning to prescribe on supplementary prescribing (SP) courses, particularly in relation to inter-professional learning, course content and subsequent use of prescribing in practice. Methods: A postal questionnaire survey was sent to all 808 SP registered pharmacists in England in April 2007, exploring demographic, training, prescribing, safety culture and general perceptions of SP. Results: After one follow-up, 411 (51%) of pharmacists responded. 82% agreed SP training was useful, 58% agreed courses provided appropriate knowledge and 62% agreed that the necessary prescribing skills were gained. Clinical examination, consultation skills training and practical experience with doctors were valued highly; pharmacology training and some aspects of course delivery were criticised. Mixed views on inter-professional learning were reported – insights into other professions being valued but knowledge and skills differences considered problematic. 67% believed SP and recent independent prescribing (IP) should be taught together, with more diagnostic training wanted; few pharmacists trained in IP, but many were training or intending to train. There was no association between pharmacists' attitudes towards prescribing training and when they undertook training between 2004 and 2007 but earlier cohorts were more likely to be using supplementary prescribing in practice. Conclusion: Pharmacists appeared to value their SP training and suggested improvements that could inform future courses. The benefits of inter-professional learning, however, may conflict with providing professionspecific training. SP training may be perceived to be an instrumental 'stepping stone' in pharmacists' professional project of gaining full IP status

    Sexual selection protects against extinction

    Reproduction through sex carries substantial costs, mainly because only half of sexual adults produce offspring1. It has been theorized that these costs could be countered if sex allows sexual selection to clear the universal fitness constraint of mutation load2,3,4. Under sexual selection, competition between (usually) males and mate choice by (usually) females create important intraspecific filters for reproductive success, so that only a subset of males gains paternity. If reproductive success under sexual selection is dependent on individual condition, which is contingent to mutation load, then sexually selected filtering through ‘genic capture’5 could offset the costs of sex because it provides genetic benefits to populations. Here we test this theory experimentally by comparing whether populations with histories of strong versus weak sexual selection purge mutation load and resist extinction differently. After evolving replicate populations of the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum for 6 to 7 years under conditions that differed solely in the strengths of sexual selection, we revealed mutation load using inbreeding. Lineages from populations that had previously experienced strong sexual selection were resilient to extinction and maintained fitness under inbreeding, with some families continuing to survive after 20 generations of sib × sib mating. By contrast, lineages derived from populations that experienced weak or non-existent sexual selection showed rapid fitness declines under inbreeding, and all were extinct after generation 10. Multiple mutations across the genome with individually small effects can be difficult to clear, yet sum to a significant fitness load; our findings reveal that sexual selection reduces this load, improving population viability in the face of genetic stress.We thank the Natural Environment Research Council and the Leverhulme Trust for financial support, D.
