    Influence of source and amount of dietary protein on the performance and reproductive function of first-calf heifers

    Increasing the amount of dietary protein above the NRC requirement increased weight gain of nursing first-calf heifers. Feeding a protein source with higher ruminal escape potential and increasing protein in the diet both improved calf gains. No significant changes in reproductive function or milk production were observed from either source or amount of dietary protein

    Banff lesions and renal allograft survival in chronic-active antibody mediated rejection

    Aims: Chronic-active antibody mediated rejection (c-aABMR) is a major cause of kidney graft loss. Currently, little is known about the relation between histopathologic parameters and renal allograft survival. Methods and results: Between 2008 and 2014, 41 patients with a progressive decrease in renal function were diagnosed with c-aABMR according to Banff 2015 and followed up for at least 3 years. Clinical and renal biopsy characteristics were analyzed for association with graft survival. During follow-up 26 cases lost their graft because of c-aABMR at a median follow up of 40 months after diagnosis. Cases with v-lesions in their biopsy had a significant higher loss of eGFR prior to diagnosis. The total inflammation score (r = −0.45 p =.007) and the severity of interstitial fibrosis (r = −0.38 p =.023) were related to the eGFR at time of biopsy. Univariate regression analysis showed that eGFR at time of biopsy, total inflammation, interstitial fibrosis and the sum chronicity score were significantly related to the risk for graft failure during follow-up. In a multivariate analysis only the severity of interstitial fibrosis remained associated with decreased graft survival (HR 1.9 per score point, 95% CI 1.2–2.8, p =.004). Conclusion: Severity of renal interstitial fibrosis and not inflammation predicts graft survival in cases of c-aABMR

    Social and cultural origins of motivations to volunteer a comparison of university students in six countries

    Although participation in volunteering and motivations to volunteer (MTV) have received substantial attention on the national level, particularly in the US, few studies have compared and explained these issues across cultural and political contexts. This study compares how two theoretical perspectives, social origins theory and signalling theory, explain variations in MTV across different countries. The study analyses responses from a sample of 5794 students from six countries representing distinct institutional contexts. The findings provide strong support for signalling theory but less so for social origins theory. The article concludes that volunteering is a personal decision and thus is influenced more at the individual level but is also impacted to some degree by macro-level societal forces

    Theory and Applications of Non-Relativistic and Relativistic Turbulent Reconnection

    Realistic astrophysical environments are turbulent due to the extremely high Reynolds numbers. Therefore, the theories of reconnection intended for describing astrophysical reconnection should not ignore the effects of turbulence on magnetic reconnection. Turbulence is known to change the nature of many physical processes dramatically and in this review we claim that magnetic reconnection is not an exception. We stress that not only astrophysical turbulence is ubiquitous, but also magnetic reconnection itself induces turbulence. Thus turbulence must be accounted for in any realistic astrophysical reconnection setup. We argue that due to the similarities of MHD turbulence in relativistic and non-relativistic cases the theory of magnetic reconnection developed for the non-relativistic case can be extended to the relativistic case and we provide numerical simulations that support this conjecture. We also provide quantitative comparisons of the theoretical predictions and results of numerical experiments, including the situations when turbulent reconnection is self-driven, i.e. the turbulence in the system is generated by the reconnection process itself. We show how turbulent reconnection entails the violation of magnetic flux freezing, the conclusion that has really far reaching consequences for many realistically turbulent astrophysical environments. In addition, we consider observational testing of turbulent reconnection as well as numerous implications of the theory. The former includes the Sun and solar wind reconnection, while the latter include the process of reconnection diffusion induced by turbulent reconnection, the acceleration of energetic particles, bursts of turbulent reconnection related to black hole sources as well as gamma ray bursts.     Pharmacophore elements of the TIPP class of delta opioid receptor antagonists

    A series of tri-and tetrapeptides sharing the amino-terminal dipeptide unit Tyr-Tic, found in the high-affinity delta opioid receptor antagonist Tyr-Tic-Phe-Phe (TIPP), was prepared and evaluated in receptor binding assays to explore the role(s) of the phenylalanine residues in positions 3 and 4. It was found that aromaticity of residues 3 and 4 is not required for high affinity, a lipophilic side chain in either location being sufficient, as evidenced by the high delta receptor binding affinities observed for the tetrapeptide Tyr-Tic-Ala-Leu and the tripeptide Tyr-Tic-Leu. These results support the suggestion of Temussi et al. [Biochem. Biophys. Res.     DES Y3 + KiDS-1000: Consistent cosmology combining cosmic shear surveys

    We present a joint cosmic shear analysis of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3) and the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000) in a collaborative effort between the two survey teams. We find consistent cosmological parameter constraints between DES Y3 and KiDS-1000 which, when combined in a joint-survey analysis, constrain the parameter S8=σ8Ωm/0.3S_8 = \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3} with a mean value of 0.7900.014+0.0180.790^{+0.018}_{-0.014}. The mean marginal is lower than the maximum a posteriori estimate, S8=0.801S_8=0.801, owing to skewness in the marginal distribution and projection effects in the multi-dimensional parameter space. Our results are consistent with S8S_8 constraints from observations of the cosmic microwave background by Planck, with agreement at the 1.7σ1.7\sigma level. We use a Hybrid analysis pipeline, defined from a mock survey study quantifying the impact of the different analysis choices originally adopted by each survey team.     Variation in Structure and Process of Care in Traumatic Brain Injury: Provider Profiles of European Neurotrauma Centers Participating in the CENTER-TBI Study.

    INTRODUCTION: The strength of evidence underpinning care and treatment recommendations in traumatic brain injury (TBI) is low. Comparative effectiveness research (CER) has been proposed as a framework to provide evidence for optimal care for TBI patients. The first step in CER is to map the existing variation. The aim of current study is to quantify variation in general structural and process characteristics among centers participating in the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury (CENTER-TBI) study. METHODS: We designed a set of 11 provider profiling questionnaires with 321 questions about various aspects of TBI care, chosen based on literature and expert opinion. After pilot testing, questionnaires were disseminated to 71 centers from 20 countries participating in the CENTER-TBI study. Reliability of questionnaires was estimated by calculating a concordance rate among 5% duplicate questions. RESULTS: All 71 centers completed the questionnaires. Median concordance rate among duplicate questions was 0.85. The majority of centers were academic hospitals (n = 65, 92%), designated as a level I trauma center (n = 48, 68%) and situated in an urban location (n = 70, 99%). The availability of facilities for neuro-trauma care varied across centers; e.g. 40 (57%) had a dedicated neuro-intensive care unit (ICU), 36 (51%) had an in-hospital rehabilitation unit and the organization of the ICU was closed in 64% (n = 45) of the centers. In addition, we found wide variation in processes of care, such as the ICU admission policy and intracranial pressure monitoring policy among centers. CONCLUSION: Even among high-volume, specialized neurotrauma centers there is substantial variation in structures and processes of TBI care. This variation provides an opportunity to study effectiveness of specific aspects of TBI care and to identify best practices with CER approaches
