    Get PDF

Lying Because We Care: Compassion Increases Prosocial Lying

    Get PDF
Prosocial lies, or lies intended to benefit others, are ubiquitous behaviors that have important social and economic consequences. Though emotions play a central role in many forms of prosocial behavior, no work has investigated how emotions influence behavior when one has the opportunity to tell a prosocial lie-a situation that presents a conflict between two prosocial ethics: lying to prevent harm to another, and honesty, which might also provide benefits to the target of the lie. Here, we examine whether the emotion of compassion influences prosocial lying, and find that compassion causally increases and positively predicts prosocial lying. In Studies 1 and 2, participants evaluated a poorly written essay and provided feedback to the essay writer. Experimentally induced compassion felt toward the essay writer (Study 1) and individual differences in trait compassion (Study 2) were positively associated with inflated feedback to the essay writer. In both of these studies, the relationship between compassion and prosocial lying was partially mediated by an enhanced importance placed on preventing emotional harm. In Study 3, we found moderation such that experimentally induced compassion increased lies that resulted in financial gains for a charity, but not lies that produced financial gains for the self. This research illuminates the emotional underpinnings of the common yet morally complex behavior of prosocial lying, and builds on work highlighting the potentially harmful effects of compassion-an emotion typically seen as socially beneficial.

Brachytherapy of Choroidal Melanomas Less Than 10 mm in Largest Basal Diameter Comparison of 10-mm and 15-mm Ruthenium Plaques

Purpose: To compare tumor control, vision, and complications between patients with a choroidal melanoma of Design: Retrospective, comparative case series. Participants: One hundred sixty-four consecutive patients with a choroidal melanoma of Methods: Diagnosis was based on growth or high-risk characteristics. The apical dose was 100 to 120 Gy aiming to deliver >= 250 Gy to the sclera. Plaque positioning was modeled retrospectively. An increase of >= 0.3 mm in thickness and >= 0.5 mm in LBD indicated local recurrence. Outcomes were compared with cumulative incidence analysis and Cox regression. Median follow-up time for patients still alive was 8.4 years. Main Outcome Measures: Recurrence rate, low vision, blindness, radiation maculopathy, and optic neuropathy. Results: Melanomas treated with the 10-mm plaque were smaller (median thickness, 1.9 mm vs. 2.6 mm; LBD, 7.1 mm vs. 8.6 mm) and located closer to foveola (median, 2.0 mm vs. 2.8 mm) than those treated with the 15-mm plaque (P <0.001). The 2 plaques provided a safety margin in 43% versus 40% eyes, provided no safety margin to guard foveola in 17% versus 33%, and did not entirely cover tumor mainly close to the disc in 32% versus 18% of eyes, respectively (P = 0.052). The incidence of a local recurrence was comparable (13% vs. 15% at 10 years; P = 0.31) and associated with plaque positioning (hazard ratio [HR], 2.81 for no safety margin; P = 0.041). At 5 years, the incidence of low vision was 14% versus 24%, and that of blindness was 3% versus 6%. Distance to the foveola was associated with loss of both levels of vision (HR, 0.65 per 1 mm vs. 0.68 per 1 mm; P Conclusions: The 10-mm ruthenium plaque contributes to better visual preservation, particularly with tumors close to fovea, without increase in local recurrence rate, and may therefore be preferable to the 15-mm plaque. An optical coherence tomography-based grading of diabetic maculopathy proposed by an international expert panel: The European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology classification.

Aims:To present an authoritative, universal, easy-to-use morphologic classification of diabetic maculopathy based on spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Methods:The first draft of the project was developed based on previously published classifications and a literature search regarding the spectral domain optical coherence tomography quantitative and qualitative features of diabetic maculopathy. This draft was sent to an international panel of retina experts for a first revision. The panel met at the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology headquarters in Lugano, Switzerland, and elaborated the final document. Results:Seven tomographic qualitative and quantitative features are taken into account and scored according to a grading protocol termed TCED-HFV, which includes foveal thickness (T), corresponding to either central subfoveal thickness or macular volume, intraretinal cysts (C), the ellipsoid zone (EZ) and/or external limiting membrane (ELM) status (E), presence of disorganization of the inner retinal layers (D), number of hyperreflective foci (H), subfoveal fluid (F), and vitreoretinal relationship (V). Four different stages of the disease, that is, early diabetic maculopathy, advanced diabetic maculopathy, severe diabetic maculopathy, and atrophic maculopathy, are based on the first four variables, namely the T, C, E, and D. The different stages reflect progressive severity of the disease. Conclusion:A novel grading system of diabetic maculopathy is hereby proposed. The classification is aimed at providing a simple, direct, objective tool to classify diabetic maculopathy (irrespective to the treatment status) even for non-retinal experts and can be used for therapeutic and prognostic purposes, as well as for correct evaluation and reproducibility of clinical investigations
