    This paper presents a game that engages players with the transformation processes involved in servitization. We have developed a workshop activity using this game for senior executives from large enterprises and SMEs, which encourages participants to explore transformation processes. The activity employs a board game reminiscent of Snakes and Ladders. Transformation steps are assigned to the squares on the board, and enablers and inhibitors are associated with ladders and snakes respectively. The game encourages reflective learning by asking players to assign their own perceived barriers and enablers to the snakes and ladders, based upon their own experiences

    Gamification to Engage Manufacturers with Servitization

    Servitization can include many kinds of processes and outcomes depending upon the contexts in which it occurs. This means that servitization is difficult to model accurately in simulations. Games, on the other hand, prioritize the provision of engaging experiences for participants over modelling realistic processes, while Serious Games can combine elements of both games and simulations. Gamification is a more recent term than either ‘simulation’ or ‘serious game’ that has been retrospectively used to describe the process of combining game elements with simulation models to create serious games. As the knowledge base of servitization is quite broad, and specific processes of transformation have yet to be verified, serious games and gamification may be more suited to engaging manufacturers with servitization than simulations. Having co-created several gamified software applications based on servitization, we discuss our findings in relation to this process

    3D Design Support for Rapid Virtual Prototyping of Manufacturing Systems

    AbstractThe paper presents several 3D layout configurator software tools and a library of manufacturing system components to rapidly build up the 3D models of manufacturing systems; some analysis tools to analyze the created 3D models; and some methods to rapidly create 3D models from point cloud of scanned manufacturing facilities. Within the configurators the user can define the following data as input: production process (e.g. type and order of operations), type of production equipment, type of material handling systems (e.g. robots, conveyors), type and sub-type of layout, and some spatial constraints (e.g. distance between machines, spatial arrangement). The configurators are able to create the 3D model of the manufacturing systems based on the selection of an appropriate layout template. The layout templates are defined by the species identified with a cladistic classification system or by the sub-species where each sub-species inherits the characteristics of its species. Based on the selected layout template and the defined production process the appropriate elements of the manufacturing system can be selected by the user from a predefined component library. Such library includes the 3D models and technical data of workstations, machine tools, material handling equipment, etc. Two analysis tools have been developed to evaluate the created 3D models: a collision elimination tool and a robot programming tool. The paper also presents two solutions to rapidly create 3D models from point cloud of scanned manufacturing facilities; as well as an application to automatically create a simplified quasi-volumetric point cloud model that can be used for collision detection

    Observational constraints on the progenitor metallicities of core-collapse supernovae

    We present constraints on the progenitor metallicities of core-collapse supernovae. To date, nearly all metallicity constraints have been inferred from indirect methods such as metallicity gradients in host galaxies, luminosities of host galaxies, or derived global galaxy metallicities. Here, progenitor metallicities are derived from optical spectra taken at the sites of nearby supernovae, from the ratio of strong emission lines found in their host HII regions.We present results from the spectra of 74 host HII regions and discuss the implications that these have on the nature of core-collapse supernova progenitors. Overall, while we find that the mean metallicity of type Ibc environments is higher than that of type II events, this difference is smaller than observed in previous studies. There is only a 0.06 dex difference in the mean metallicity values, at a statistical significance of ~1.5 sigma, while using a KS-test we find that the two metallicity distributions are marginally consistent with being drawn from the same parent population (probability >10%). This argues that progenitor metallicity is not a dominant parameter in deciding supernovae type, with progenitor mass and/or binarity playing a much more significant role.Comment: ACCEPTED for publication in MNRA

CYPs are found in virtually all organisms, from archae, and eubacteria to eukaryota. A number of endocrine disruptors are suspected of exerting their effects through disruption of normal CYP function. Consequently, alterations in steroid hormone metabolism through changes in CYP could provide an important tool to evaluate potential effects of endocrine disruptors. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential effects of the known CYP modulator, benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P), on the testosterone metabolism in the invertebrate Neomysis integer (Crustacea; Mysidacea). N. integer were exposed for 96h to 0.43, 2.39, 28.83, 339.00 and 1682.86μg B(a)P L-1 and a solventcontrol, and subsequently their ability to metabolize testosterone was assessed. Identification and quantification of the produced phase I and phase II testosterone metabolites was performed using liquid chromatography coupled with multiple mass spectrometry (LC-MS2). Significant changes were observed in the overall ability of N. integer to metabolize testosterone when exposed to 2.39, 28.83, 339.00 and 1682.86μg B(a)P L-1 as compared to the control animals.This research was supported by a research grant of the Ghent University Research Fund (BOF, 011.072.02).     Professional Decision-Making in Research (PDR): The validity of a new measure

    In this paper, we report on the development and validity of the Professional Decision-Making in Research (PDR) measure, a vignette-based test that examines decision-making strategies used by investigators when confronted with challenging situations in the context of empirical research. The PDR was administered online with a battery of validity measures to a group of NIH-funded researchers and research trainees who were diverse in terms of age, years of experience, types of research, and race. The PDR demonstrated adequate reliability (alpha = .84) and parallel form correlation (r = .70). As hypothesized, the PDR was significantly negatively correlated with narcissism, cynicism, moral disengagement, and compliance disengagement; it was not correlated with socially desirable responding. In regression analysis, the strongest predictors of higher PDR scores were low compliance disengagement, speaking English as a native language, conducting clinical research with human subjects, and low levels of narcissism. Given that the PDR was written at an eighth grade reading level to be suitable for use with English as a second language participants and that only one-fourth of items focused on clinical research, further research into the possible roles of culture and research ethics training across specialties is warranted. This initial validity study demonstrates the potential usefulness of the PDR as an educational outcome assessment measure and a research instrument for studies on professionalism and integrity in research

    Discovery of kpc-scale line emission in barred galaxies, not linked to AGN or star formation

    We present an analysis of the optical line emission from nearby barred galaxies, and in particular look at the radial range occupied by the bar. In many cases this region is marked by what we term a 'star formation desert', with a marked deficit of HII regions in optical narrow-band H-alpha imaging. Here we present long-slit spectroscopy revealing that such regions do have line emission, but that it is low-level, spatially smooth and almost ubiquitous. The relative strengths of the H-alpha and the spectrally adjacent [NII] lines in the regions are completely discrepant from those associated with star formation regions, and more closely match expectations for 'LINER' regions. We quantify the total line emission from these extended, kpc-scale regions, and determine the spurious contribution it would make to the determined star formation rate of these galaxies if interpreted as normal H-alpha emission. We concur with previous studies that link this LINER emission to old stellar populations, e.g. post-asymptotic giant branch stars, and propose these strongly-barred early-type spirals as a prime location for further tests of such emission

    Piecing together the puzzle of NGC 5253: abundances, kinematics and WR stars

    We present Gemini-S/GMOS-IFU optical spectroscopy of four regions near the centre of the nearby (3.8 Mpc) dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 5253. This galaxy is famous for hosting a radio supernebula containing two deeply embedded massive super star clusters, surrounded by a region of enhanced nitrogen abundance that has been linked to the presence of WR stars. We detected 11 distinct sources of red WR bump (CIV) emission over a 20" (~350 pc) area, each consistent with the presence of ~1 WCE-type star. WC stars are not found coincident with the supernebula, although WN stars have previously been detected here. We performed a multi-component decomposition of the H\alpha\ line across all four fields and mapped the kinematics of the narrow and broad (FWHM = 100-250 km/s) components. These maps paint a picture of localised gas flows, as part of multiple overlapping bubbles and filaments driven by the star clusters throughout the starburst. We confirm the presence of a strong H\alpha\ velocity gradient over ~4.5" (~80 pc) coincident with the region of N/O enhancement, and high gas density known from previous study, and interpret this as an accelerating ionized gas outflow from the supernebula clusters. We measure the ionized gas abundances in a number of regions in the outer IFU positions and combine these with measurements from the literature to assess the radial abundance distribution. We find that the O/H and N/H profiles are consistent with being flat. Only the central 50 pc exhibits the well-known N/O enhancement, and we propose that the unusually high densities/pressures in the supernebula region have acted to impede the escape of metal-enriched hot winds from the star clusters and allow them to mix with the cooler phases, thus allowing these freshly processed chemicals to be seen in the optical.Comment: 16 pages, accepted to A&
