    Considerations for employing intersectionality in qualitative health research

    Intersectionality theory has recently emerged in the health sciences as a critical theoretical and methodical approach. Though some scholars have outlined explicit guidelines for applying intersectionality in research using quantitative methods, others have cited epistemological concerns and additive thinking to advocate for the analysis of intersectionality with qualitative methods. Thus, there remains a need for additional guidance and support for utilizing and applying intersectionality theory throughout the qualitative research process. With the goal of demystifying the process of utilizing intersectionality as a methodological approach in qualitative research in the health sciences, this paper provides researchers with recommendations, specific examples, and important considerations for incorporating intersectional approaches into study conceptualization, participant recruitment, data collection, and data analysis. Additionally, this paper reviews challenges that researchers may experience in conducting research using intersectional approaches and offers suggestions for overcoming challenges. This paper offers timely and relevant information that can be used to strengthen the theoretical and methodological rigor of qualitative health research, especially studies that seek to advance health equity

    Measurement of direct photon emission in K+→π+π0ÎłK^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 \gamma decay using stopped positive kaons

    The radiative decay K+→π+π0ÎłK^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 \gamma (Kπ2ÎłK_{\pi 2 \gamma}) has been measured with stopped positive kaons. A Kπ2ÎłK_{\pi 2 \gamma} sample containing 4k events was analyzed, and the Kπ2ÎłK_{\pi 2 \gamma} branching ratio of the direct photon emission process was determined to be [6.1±2.5(stat)±1.9(syst)]×10−6[6.1\pm2.5({\rm stat})\pm1.9({\rm syst})]\times 10^{-6}. No interference pattern with internal bremsstrahlung was observed.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, to be published in Phys. Lett.

    Targeting GSK3 and Associated Signaling Pathways Involved in Cancer

    Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3) is a serine/threonine (S/T) protein kinase. Although GSK-3 originally was identified to have functions in regulation of glycogen synthase, it was subsequently determined to have roles in multiple normal biochemical processes as well as various disease conditions. GSK-3 is sometimes referred to as a moonlighting protein due to the multiple substrates and processes which it controls. Frequently, when GSK-3 phosphorylates proteins, they are targeted for degradation. GSK-3 is often considered a component of the PI3K/PTEN/AKT/GSK-3/mTORC1 pathway as GSK-3 is frequently phosphorylated by AKT which regulates its inactivation. AKT is often active in human cancer and hence, GSK-3 is often inactivated. Moreover, GSK-3 also interacts with WNT/\u3b2-catenin signaling and \u3b2-catenin and other proteins in this pathway are targets of GSK-3. GSK-3 can modify NF-\u3baB activity which is often expressed at high levels in cancer cells. Multiple pharmaceutical companies developed small molecule inhibitors to suppress GSK-3 activity. In addition, various natural products will modify GSK-3 activity. This review will focus on the effects of small molecule inhibitors and natural products on GSK-3 activity and provide examples where these compounds were effective in suppressing cancer growth

    An in situ transmission electron microscopy study of the ion irradiation induced amorphisation of silicon by He and Xe

    Transmission electron microscopy with in situ ion irradiation has been used to examine the ionbeam-induced amorphisation of crystalline silicon under irradiation with light (He) and heavy (Xe) ions at room temperature. Analysis of the electron diffraction data reveal the heterogeneous amorphisation mechanism to be dominant in both cases. The differences in the amorphisation curves are discussed in terms of intra-cascade dynamic recovery, and the role of electronic and nuclear loss mechanisms

    We consider probabilistic theories in which the most elementary system, a two-dimensional system, contains one bit of information. The bit is assumed to be contained in any complete set of mutually complementary measurements. The requirement of invariance of the information under a continuous change of the set of mutually complementary measurements uniquely singles out a measure of information, which is quadratic in probabilities. The assumption which gives the same scaling of the number of degrees of freedom with the dimension as in quantum theory follows essentially from the assumption that all physical states of a higher dimensional system are those and only those from which one can post-select physical states of two-dimensional systems. The requirement that no more than one bit of information (as quantified by the quadratic measure) is contained in all possible post-selected two-dimensional systems is equivalent to the positivity of density operator in quantum theory.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure.     Nonstable K-Theory for graph algebras

    We compute the monoid V (LK(E)) of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over certain graph algebras LK(E), and we show that this monoid satisfies the refinement property and separative cancellation. We also show that there is a natural isomorphism between the lattice of graded ideals of LK(E) and the lattice of order-ideals of V (LK(E)). When K is the field C of complex numbers, the algebra LC(E) is a dense subalgebra of the graph C -algebra C (E), and we show that the inclusion map induces an isomorphism between the corresponding monoids. As a consequence, the graph C*-algebra of any row-finite graph turns out to satisfy the stable weak cancellation propert

    A Journey along the Extruder with Polystyrene:C60 Nanocomposites: Convergence of Feeding Formulations into a Similar Nanomorphology

    We investigated the effect of the feeding formulation (premixed powders of pure components versus solvent-blended mixture) of polystyrene–C60 composites on the dispersion and reagglomeration phenomena developing along the barrel of a twin-screw extruder. The dispersion of C60 in the PS matrix is studied over different length scales using a combination of optical microscopy, spin-echo small-angle neutron scattering (SESANS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). When a solvent-blended mixture is used as the feeding formulation, the inlet material contains essentially molecularly dispersed C60 as revealed by the nanodomains with very small phase contrast. However, C60 reagglomeration occurs along the extruder, creating a morphology still containing only nanodomains but with much higher phase contrast. In the case of mixed powders, the material evolves from the initial macroscopic mixture of pure polystyrene and C60 into a composite simultaneously containing micro- and nanoaggregates of C60 as well as C60 molecularly dispersed in the matrix. Our results show that the two different initial feeding formulations with widely different initial morphologies converge along the extruder, through opposite morphological pathways, into a similar final nanomorphology which is dictated by the interplay between the thermodynamics of the system and the flow. Correlations between the morphological evolution along the extruder and the thermorheological properties of the composites are identified
