    Integral field near-infrared spectroscopy of II Zw 40

    We present integral field spectroscopy in the near-infrared of the nearby starburst galaxy IIZw40. Our new observations provide an unprecedented detailed view of the interstellar medium and star formation of this galaxy. The radiation emitted by the galaxy is dominated by a giant HII region, which extends over an area of more than 400 pc in size. A few clusters are present in this area, however one in particular appears to be the main source of ionizing photons. We derive the properties of this object and compare them with those of the 30 Doradus cluster in the Large magellanic cloud (LMC). We study the spatial distribution and velocity field of different components of the inetrstellar medium (ISM), mostly through the Bracket series lines, the molecular hydrogen spectrum, and [FeII]. We find that [FeII] and H2 are mostly photon excited, but while the region emitting [FeII] is almost coincident with the giant HII region observed in the lines of atomic H and He, the H2 has a quite different distribution in space and velocity. The age of the stellar population in the main cluster is such that no supernova (SN) should be present yet so that the gas kinematics must be dominated by the young stars. We do not see, in the starbursting region, any geometrical or dynamical structure that can be related to the large scale morphology of the galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&

    Integrated metamaterial surface-emitting antenna for beam steering applications

    Integrated optical antennas are relevant devices for the development of next-generation LIDAR systems. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new topology to implement long antennas in silicon-on-insulator platform.     Bricked and evanescently-coupled topologies: expanding the portfolio of subwavelength metamaterial silicon photonic devices

    We present two novel topologies of subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguides: the bricked-SWG and the evanescently-coupled-SWG. The bricked topology enables accurate control of waveguide anisotropy while maintaining the index and dispersion engineering advantage intrinsic to SWG waveguides. The evanescently-coupled-SWG allows unprecedented control of the strength of the modal perturbation in waveguide Bragg gratings and nanophotonic antennas. Both topologies leverage a Manhattan-like pattern, with pixel sizes compatible with deep-uv lithography. Our recent results will be discussed, focusing on polarization-independent multimode interference couplers for the O and C bands and a millimeter-long narrow-beam steerable optical antenna array with angular divergence of only 1.8Âș×0.2Âș.Universidad de MĂĄlaga.     Recent progress in subwavelength grating metamaterial engineered silicon photonic devices.

    In this talk we present our recent advances in SWG metamaterial engineering. We will show a 1D-optical phased array composed of 112 evanescent-coupled surface emitting antennas with a length of 1.5 mm and fed by a compact distributed Bragg deflector. The measurements demonstrate a wavelength-steerable collimated beam with a far-field angular divergence of 1.8o × 0.2o. Experimental results of a bricked SWG 2×2 MMI coupler are also shown, achieving polarization agnostic performance in the 1500nm to 1560nm wavelength range.     Subwavelength silicon photonics: keynote presentation

    Physicochemical characteristics of citrus jelly with non cariogenic and functional sweeteners

    In this study the effect of sweeteners with low glycemic index and non-cariogenic characteristics (isomaltulose, oligofructose and tagatose) in jelly prepared with citrus juice has been evaluated considering a citrus jelly formulated with sucrose as reference. The soluble solids, moisture content, pH, water activity, antioxidant capacity, optical and mechanical properties of jelly made using different sweeteners was determined during storage. Besides, mesophilic aerobics and moulds and yeasts was also counted to determine their stability over time. Sensory evaluation of the citrus jelly has also been done. The results showed the antioxidant activity decreased during storage in all formulations. Tagatose increased lightness whereas coordinates a*, b* and chrome of all the jellies prepared using new sweeteners were lower than jellies with sucrose. However, citrus jelly with only oligofructose or tagatose or with the mixture of isomaltulose and tagatose were most closely resembled to the control jelly with respect to mechanical properties.     Interim 2017/18 influenza seasonal vaccine effectiveness: Combined results from five European studies

    Between September 2017 and February 2018, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, A(H3N2) and B viruses (mainly B/Yamagata, not included in 2017/18 trivalent vaccines) co-circulated in Europe. Interim results from five European studies indicate that, in all age groups, 2017/18 influenza vaccine effectiveness was 25 to 52% against any influenza, 55 to 68% against influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, -42 to 7% against influenza A(H3N2) and 36 to 54% against influenza B. 2017/18 influenza vaccine should be promoted where influenza still circulates
