Durabilidad vs Vulnerabilidad

A defi nition of the durability of a constructive element from its vulnerability is being proposed. In order to do so, these two basic concepts are analyzed, together with constructive function, external actions and quality. Some empiric mathematical formula are established to define durability from vulnerability, and vulnerability ad its variations are precisely described from the pathological processes and the derived constructive failures that can affect to construction materials and building elements, while these failures are described grouped in different families. Finally a case study of durability from vulnerability is developed referring to stone cladding elements.Se propone la defi nición de durabilidad de un elemento constructivo a partir de su vulnerabilidad. Para ello, se analizan estos dos conceptos básicos junto con los de función constructiva, acciones externas y calidad. Se parte de unas fórmulas matemáticas empíricas para defi nir la durabilidad a partir de la vulnerabilidad, se describe con precisión la vulnerabilidad en construcción y sus variantes a partir de los posibles procesos patológicos y sus consiguientes lesiones, susceptibles de afectar a los materiales y elementos de un edifi cio, y se describen dichas lesiones, agrupadas por familias. Finalmente, se desarrolla un ejemplo de defi nición de durabilidad a partir de la vulnerabilidad en chapados de piedra

Funcionales de tipo tikhonov-phillips generalizado : regla de elección de parámetro y cota de error a-posteriori

En este trabajo se estudia una regla de elección de parámetro de regularización para un funcional de tikhonov-phillips generalizado. A su vez, se obtiene una cota de error a-posteriori entre la solución exacta del problema y la solución regularizada obtenida, considerando como término de fidelidad 1/p ‖Kx-y‖^py como penalizante un funcional convexo ψ(x). Evolución de las revistas de arquitectura y construcción en España

To mark the 70th anniversary of Informes de la Construcción, a brief analysis is done of the construction magazines that appeared since the mid-nineteenth century, in which they began this type of publications, until the second half of the twentieth century. They are grouped into three major periods: second half of the nineteenth century; from 1901 to 1936; from 1940 to 1950. Their names, their leaders, their main objectives and their years of publication are mentioned, highlighting two of them as more permanent; Revista de Obras Públicas and Arquitectura, covering the two major fields of activity in the sector. The appearance of Informes de la Construcción in 1948 is mentioned, as a publication that manages to combine architectural design with its constructive solutions (formal art and technical art), a clear inspiration of the mind of Eduardo Torroja. Finally, the conclusion is reached that “Informes” is the logical consequence of the evolution of Architecture and Construction journals up to that moment.Con motivo del 70 aniversario de Informes de la Construcción, se realiza un breve recorrido por las revistas de construcción aparecidas desde mediados del siglo XIX, en que empezaron este tipo de publicaciones, hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Se agrupan en tres grandes periodos: segunda mitad del XIX; de 1901 a 1936; de 1940 a 1950. Se mencionan sus nombres, sus responsables, sus objetivos principales y sus años de edición, destacando dos como más permanentes; la Revista de Obras Públicas y Arquitectura, cubriendo los dos grandes campos de actividad en el sector. Se menciona la aparición de Informes de la Construcción en 1948, como publicación que logra conjugar el diseño arquitectónico con sus soluciones constructivas (arte formal y arte técnico), inspiración clara de la mente de Eduardo Torroja. Finalmente, se alcanzan la conclusión de que “Informes” es la consecuencia lógica de la evolución de las revistas de Arquitectura y Construcción hasta ese momento

La evolución de los sistemas constructivos en la edificación. Procedimientos para su industrialización

The article contains a review of the evolution of construction systems since the second quarter of the twentieth century in response to the move away from bearing wall structures and the advent of new materials. The impact of such changes on system (primarily structure, facade and roof) constructional operability is analyzed from the vantage of architecture as a functional art. The industrialization and sustainability of new systems are broached in the framework of construction process rationalization, bearing in mind the different phases (material manufacture, building, use and maintenance) involved. Finally, the basic features of a desirable future are outlined.Se lleva a cabo una revisión de la evolución de los sistemas constructivos a partir del 2º cuarto del siglo XX, como consecuencia del abandono de las estructuras murarias y la aparición de nuevos materiales. Se analiza la repercusión de dichos cambios en la funcionalidad constructiva de los sistemas (principalmente estructuras, fachadas y cubiertas) a partir de la consideración de la arquitectura como una arte funcional. Se plantea la industrialización y sostenibilidad de los nuevos sistemas a partir de la racionalización de los procesos constructivos, teniendo en cuenta las distintas fases (producción de materiales, ejecución, uso y mantenimiento). Finalmente, se exponen las líneas básicas de un futuro deseable

Combined beach - inner shelf erosion in short and medium term (Maspalomas, Canary Islands)

The analysis of the accurate topo-bathymetric digital elevation model (DEM), the cartography of the submarine sedimentary cover and the monitoring of short (seasonal) and medium-term (2000-2009) morphological changes have permitted depicting the erosional trend in the short and medium-term of the Maspalomas sedimentary system. Short-term analysis showed intense sedimentary fluxes between the beaches and the inner shelf, and sedimentary exchanges with other sectors of the inner shelf, while the steep slope inner shelf fronting La Bajeta cape was identified as a sink area. In the medium-term the sediment budget showed high erosion of the supratidal and intertidal sectors of the beaches due to storm waves in the 2005-2006 winter, followed by accretion over the next four years, but which did not reach the initial sedimentary state. The inner shelf and subtidal sector of the beaches showed negative budgets in the short and medium-term. Interannual variability of the wave and wind regimes determines decadal beach erosion-accretion cycles, while long-term climatic change, evidenced at the study area by a decrease of trade winds and NE wave intensity in 2005, is expected to produce a possible increase of erosion at the El Inglés inner shelf and consequently a decrease in sediment inputs to the El Inglés beach and Maspalomas dune field. Finally, the influence of the geological heritage is depicted by the Fataga gully’s control of the present coastal morphology, and by the island relief control of the wind, waves and current directions in the study area

CAR-T Cells Hit the Tumor Microenvironment: Strategies to Overcome Tumor Escape

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapies have demonstrated remarkable efficacy for the treatment of hematological malignancies. However, in patients with solid tumors, objective responses to CAR-T cell therapy remain sporadic and transient. A major obstacle for CAR-T cells is the intrinsic ability of tumors to evade immune responses. Advanced solid tumors are largely composed of desmoplastic stroma and immunosuppressive modulators, and characterized by aberrant cell proliferation and vascularization, resulting in hypoxia and altered nutrient availability. To mount a curative response after infusion, CAR-T cells must infiltrate the tumor, recognize their cognate antigen and perform their effector function in this hostile tumor microenvironment, to then differentiate and persist as memory T cells that confer long-term protection. Fortunately, recent advances in synthetic biology provide a wide set of tools to genetically modify CAR-T cells to overcome some of these obstacles. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of the key tumor intrinsic mechanisms that prevent an effective CAR-T cell antitumor response and we discuss the most promising strategies to prevent tumor escape to CAR-T cell therapy
