    Preparing aquatic research for an extreme future: call for improved definitions and responsive, multidisciplinary approaches

Bioscience, 72(6), (2022): 508-520, https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biac020.Extreme events have increased in frequency globally, with a simultaneous surge in scientific interest about their ecological responses, particularly in sensitive freshwater, coastal, and marine ecosystems. We synthesized observational studies of extreme events in these aquatic ecosystems, finding that many studies do not use consistent definitions of extreme events. Furthermore, many studies do not capture ecological responses across the full spatial scale of the events. In contrast, sampling often extends across longer temporal scales than the event itself, highlighting the usefulness of long-term monitoring. Many ecological studies of extreme events measure biological responses but exclude chemical and physical responses, underscoring the need for integrative and multidisciplinary approaches. To advance extreme event research, we suggest prioritizing pre- and postevent data collection, including leveraging long-term monitoring; making intersite and cross-scale comparisons; adopting novel empirical and statistical approaches; and developing funding streams to support flexible and responsive data collection

    Migrant women, place and identity in contemporary women's writing

    While recent scholarship on migration has reflected growing attention to gender, and to the intersectionality of race, gender and sexuality, there has been little focus on women's emotional and bodily responses to migration in the context of larger structures of sexism, racism, and the legacies of colonialism. In this paper I examine some literary portrayals of how migrant women's relationships with specific places of origin and settlement, both steeped in structural relationships of unequal power and experienced on an immediate, psychological and bodily plane, are fundamental to migrant women's changing sense of belonging and identity. Jamaica Kincaid in her novel Lucy, Tsitsi Dangarembga in her novel Nervous Conditions, and Dionne Brand in the opening poems of her volume No Language is Neutral evoke some of the complex ways in which migration can affect women's lives and identities, thus both complementing and critiquing some contemporary theorisations of migration and migrant identities

    Simultaneous noninvasive recording of skin sympathetic nerve activity and electrocardiogram

    BACKGROUND: Sympathetic nerve activity is important to cardiac arrhythmogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for simultaneous noninvasive recording of skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) and electrocardiogram (ECG) using conventional ECG electrodes. This method (neuECG) can be used to adequately estimate sympathetic tone. METHODS: We recorded neuECG signals from the skin of 56 human subjects. The signals were low-pass filtered to show the ECG and high-pass filtered to show nerve activity. Protocol 1 included 12 healthy volunteers who underwent cold water pressor test and Valsalva maneuver. Protocol 2 included 19 inpatients with epilepsy but without known heart diseases monitored for 24 hours. Protocol 3 included 22 patients admitted with electrical storm and monitored for 39.0 ± 28.2 hours. Protocol 4 included 3 patients who underwent bilateral stellate ganglion blockade with lidocaine injection. RESULTS: In patients without heart diseases, spontaneous nerve discharges were frequently observed at baseline and were associated with heart rate acceleration. SKNA recorded from chest leads (V1-V6) during cold water pressor test and Valsalva maneuver (protocol 1) was invariably higher than during baseline and recovery periods (P < .001). In protocol 2, the average SKNA correlated with heart rate acceleration (r = 0.73 ± 0.14, P < .05) and shortening of QT interval (P < .001). Among 146 spontaneous ventricular tachycardia episodes recorded in 9 patients of protocol 3, 106 episodes (73%) were preceded by SKNA within 30 seconds of onset. Protocol 4 showed that bilateral stellate ganglia blockade by lidocaine inhibited SKNA. CONCLUSION: SKNA is detectable using conventional ECG electrodes in humans and may be useful in estimating sympathetic tone

    On the detection and tracking of space debris using the Murchison Widefield Array. I. Simulations and test observations demonstrate feasibility

    The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a new low-frequency interferometric radio telescope, operating in the benign radio frequency environment of remote Western Australia. The MWA is the low-frequency precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and is the first of three SKA precursors to be operational, supporting a varied science mission ranging from the attempted detection of the Epoch of Reionization to the monitoring of solar flares and space weather. In this paper we explore the possibility that the MWA can be used for the purposes of Space Situational Awareness (SSA). In particular we propose that the MWA can be used as an element of a passive radar facility operating in the frequency range 87.5-108 MHz (the commercial FM broadcast band). In this scenario the MWA can be considered the receiving element in a bi-static radar configuration, with FM broadcast stations serving as non-cooperative transmitters. The FM broadcasts propagate into space, are reflected off debris in Earth orbit and are received at the MWA. The imaging capabilities of the MWA can be used to simultaneously detect multiple pieces of space debris, image their positions on the sky as a function of time and provide tracking data that can be used to determine orbital parameters. Such a capability would be a valuable addition to Australian and global SSA assets, in terms of southern and eastern hemispheric coverage. We provide a feasibility assessment of this proposal, based on simple calculations and electromagnetic simulations, that shows that the detection of sub-meter size debris should be possible (debris radius of &#62;0.5 m to &#8764;1000 km altitude). We also present a proof-of-concept set of observations that demonstrate the feasibility of the proposal, based on the detection and tracking of the International Space Station via reflected FM broadcast signals originating in southwest Western Australia. These observations broadly validate our calculations and simulations. We discuss some significant challenges that need to be addressed in order to turn the feasible concept into a robust operational capability for SSA. The aggregate received power due to reflections off space debris in the FM band is equivalent to a &#60;1 mJy increase in the background confusion noise for the long integrations needed for Epoch of Reionization experiments, which is insignificant

    Spreading order: religion, cooperative niche construction, and risky coordination problems

    Adaptationists explain the evolution of religion from the cooperative effects of religious commitments, but which cooperation problem does religion evolve to solve? I focus on a class of symmetrical coordination problems for which there are two pure Nash equilibriums: (1) ALL COOPERATE, which is efficient but relies on full cooperation; (2) ALL DEFECT, which is inefficient but pays regardless of what others choose. Formal and experimental studies reveal that for such risky coordination problems, only the defection equilibrium is evolutionarily stable. The following makes sense of otherwise puzzling properties of religious cognition and cultures as features of cooperative designs that evolve to stabilise such risky exchange. The model is interesting because it explains lingering puzzles in the data on religion, and better integrates evolutionary theories of religion with recent, well-motivated models of cooperative niche construction

    The Murchison Widefield Array: The Square Kilometre Array Precursor at Low Radio Frequencies

    The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is one of three Square Kilometre Array Precursor telescopes and is located at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory in the Murchison Shire of the mid-west of Western Australia, a location chosen for its extremely low levels of radio frequency interference. The MWA operates at low radio frequencies, 80–300 MHz, with a processed bandwidth of 30.72 MHz for both linear polarisations, and consists of 128 aperture arrays (known as tiles) distributed over a ~3-km diameter area. Novel hybrid hardware/software correlation and a real-time imaging and calibration systems comprise the MWA signal processing backend. In this paper, the as-built MWA is described both at a system and sub-system level, the expected performance of the array is presented, and the science goals of the instrument are summarised
