    Gendered environmental themes in children's media

    The natural environment is commonly perceived as feminine-oriented by society, however the origins of this orientation remain unclear. This study addresses the gendered lens applied to nature during gender socialization through children’s animated television shows in the United States. 52 children’s animated series airing from 2000 to 2020 discuss the environment through the use of rhetorical tropes. These series are further examined for reoccurring patterns showing how environmental narratives are gendered within children’s animated shows. The results of this study find that feminine-oriented behaviors are most often assigned to pro-environmental sentiments and used to promote environmental action through emotional reasoning tactics. Masculine-oriented behaviors often resulted in inconclusive environmental action or continued notions of eco-friendly behaviors as feminine. In shows without strong masculine or feminine presentations, environmental narratives were more likely shown through characterization or used as an educational tool for younger audiences. These findings can be used in future research exploring the effects of gendered messaging on environmental attitudes throughout life as well as provide a base for continuing this line of research in other cultural regions

    The economics and ecology of alley cropping in the mid-western United States

We have investigated two alley cropping practices: a summer crop of alfalfa with black walnut and a winter crop rotation of canola and wheat with heartnut. We compared both practices at two alley widths to conventionally grown crops to determine which arrangement of crop and tree species produced the greatest return while providing the maximum ecological benefits. In the first practice with alfalfa, we found that alfalfa weevil mortality was significantly higher in alley cropped alfalfa compared to monocropped alfalfa, and that arthropod diversity was greater in alley cropped crops compared to conventionally grown crops. Alfalfa yield from wider alleyways was not significantly different from monocropped alfalfa. In the second practice with canola and wheat, alley cropping winter crops provided less competition with trees for water, nutrients and light while providing many of the same benefits found in the alfalfa-walnut system. Wheat yield was greater in monoculture than in wide or narrow alleyways, and greater in wide alleyways than in narrow alleyways the first rotation but not the second. All wheat treatments in both years produced economically significant returns. Canola yields were not significantly different between the alley cropped and monocropped treatments the first rotation. All canola treatments produced significant economic returns. Insect numbers in canola followed a similar pattern as those found in the alfalfa walnut practice, with more predators and greater diversity in the alley crops compared to the conventional crops.     A Method to Evaluate Seeder Performance

    Evaluating in field seeder performance is challenging and sometimes requires destructive methods. An alternative method for evaluating seeder performance based on nonlinear regression was developed. This method yields parameters that describe seeder performance, such as emergence rate, initial emergence data, and emergence percent. These parameters are easy to explain to the practitioner. The proposed method was compared to a widely used method to assess emergence rate. Results assessing emergence percent were comparable between the two methods. There were differences between the emergence rate index and emergence rate determined from the proposed method. These differences were expected since the emergence rate index encompasses more information than simply the rate of emergence

    After the 1999 West Nile (WN) encephalitis outbreak in New York, 2,300 overwintering adult mosquitoes were tested for WN virus by cell culture and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. WN viral RNA and live virus were found in pools of Culex mosquitoes. Persistence in overwintering Cx. pipiens may be important in the maintenance of WN virus in the northeastern United States

    Lyme disease in Wisconsin: epidemiologic, clinical, serologic, and entomologic findings.

    In 1980-82, 80 individuals (71 Wisconsin residents) had confirmed Lyme disease (LD-c) reported; 39 additional patients had probable or possible LD. All cases of LD-c occurred during May-November; 73 percent occurred during June-July; 54 (68 percent) occurred in males. The mean age was 38.7 years (range, 7-77 years). Among LD-c patients, likely exposure to the presumed vector Ixodes dammini (ID) occurred in 22 different Wisconsin counties. Antibodies to the ID spirochete that causes LD occurred in 33 of 49 LD-c cases versus 0 of 18 in ill controls (p less than .001) and in 13 of 26 LD-c cases treated with penicillin or tetracycline versus 16 of 19 LD-c cases not treated. Early antibiotic therapy appears to blunt the antibody response to the ID spirochete. Regional tick surveys conducted in Wisconsin during each November in 1979-82 have demonstrated regions of greater density of ID. Utilizing comparable tick collection in these surveys, increases were noted in the percentage of deer with ID from 24 percent (31/128) in 1979 to 38 percent (58/152) in 1981, in the standardized mean value of ID/deer from 1.0 in 1979 to 2.2 in 1981, in the percentage of ID of the total ticks collected from 13 percent in 1979 to 71 percent in 1981, or in the ratio of ID to Dermacentor albipictus ticks from 0.14 in 1979 to 2.44 in 1981. However, a reduction in the density of ID/deer was noted generally throughout Wisconsin in 1982 when compared to 1981.     Controls on the diurnal streamflow cycles in two subbasins of an alpine headwater catchment

    In high-altitude alpine catchments, diurnal streamflow cycles are typically dominated by snowmelt or ice melt. Evapotranspiration-induced diurnal streamflow cycles are less observed in these catchments but might happen simultaneously. During a field campaign in the summer 2012 in an alpine catchment in the Swiss Alps (Val Ferret catchment, 20.4 km2, glaciarized area: 2%), we observed a transition in the early season from a snowmelt to an evapotranspiration-induced diurnal streamflow cycle in one of two monitored subbasins. The two different cycles were of comparable amplitudes and the transition happened within a time span of several days. In the second monitored subbasin, we observed an ice melt-dominated diurnal cycle during the entire season due to the presence of a small glacier. Comparisons between ice melt and evapotranspiration cycles showed that the two processes were happening at the same times of day but with a different sign and a different shape. The amplitude of the ice melt cycle decreased exponentially during the season and was larger than the amplitude of the evapotranspiration cycle which was relatively constant during the season. Our study suggests that an evapotranspiration-dominated diurnal streamflow cycle could damp the ice melt-dominated diurnal streamflow cycle. The two types of diurnal streamflow cycles were separated using a method based on the identification of the active riparian area and measurement of evapotranspiration

    We describe the isolation of West Nile virus (WNV; Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) from blood of a Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) collected in northwestern Missouri, USA in August 2012. Sequencing determined that the virus was related to lineage 1a WNV02 strains. We discuss the role of wildlife in WNV disease epidemiology

    How Low Can You Go?: Widespread Challenges in Measuring Low Stream Discharge and a Path Forward

    Low flows pose unique challenges for accurately quantifying streamflow. Current field methods are not optimized to measure these conditions, which in turn, limits research and management. In this essay, we argue that the lack of methods for measuring low streamflow is a fundamental challenge that must be addressed to ensure sustainable water management now and into the future, particularly as climate change shifts more streams to increasingly frequent low flows. We demonstrate the pervasive challenge of measuring low flows, present a decision support tool (DST) for navigating best practices in measuring low flows, and highlight important method developmental needs

    A water cycle for the Anthropocene

    International audienceHumor us for a minute and do an online image search of the water cycle. How many diagrams do you have to scroll through before seeing any sign of humans? What about water pollution or climate change—two of the main drivers of the global water crisis? In a recent analysis of more than 450 water cycle diagrams, we found that 85% showed no human interaction with the water cycle and 98% omitted any sign of climate change or waterpollution (Abbott et al., 2019). Additionally, 92% of diagrams depicted verdant, temperate ecosystems with abundant freshwater and 95% showed only a single river basin. It did not matter if the diagrams came from textbooks, scientific articles, or the internet, nor if they were old or new; most showed an undisturbed water cycle, free from human interference. These depictions contrast starkly with the state of the water cycle in the Anthropocene, when land conversion, human water use, and climate change affect nearly every water pool and flux (Wurtsbaugh et al., 2017; Falkenmark et al., 2019; Wine and Davison, 2019). The dimensions and scale of human interference with water are manifest in failing fossil aquifersin the world’s great agricultural regions (Famiglietti, 2014), accelerating ice discharge from the Arctic (Box et al., 2018), and instability in atmospheric rivers that support continental rainfall (Paul et al., 2016).We believe that incorrect water cycle diagrams are a symptom of a much deeper and widespread problem about how humanity relates to water on Earth. Society does not understand how the water cycle works nor how humans fit into it (Attari, 2014; Linton, 2014; Abbott et al., 2019). In response to this crisis of understanding, we call on researchers, educators, journalists, lawyers, and policy makers to change how we conceptualize and present the global water cycle. Specifically, we must teach where water comes from, what determines its availability, and how many individuals and ecosystems are in crisis because of water mismanagement, climate change, and land conversion. Because the drivers of the global water crisis are truly global, ensuring adequate water for humans and ecosystems will require coordinated efforts that extend beyond geopolitical borders and outlast the tenure of individual administrations (Keys et al., 2017; Adler, 2019). This level of coordination and holistic thinking requires widespread understanding of the water cycle and the global water crisis. Making the causes and consequences of the water crisis visible in our diagrams is atractable and important step towards the goal of a sustainable relationship with water that includes ecosystems and society
