The beta function of N=1 SYM in Differential Renormalization

Using differential renormalization, we calculate the complete two-point function of the background gauge superfield in pure N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to two loops. Ultraviolet and (off-shell) infrared divergences are renormalized in position and momentum space respectively. This allows us to reobtain the beta function from the dependence on the ultraviolet renormalization scale in an infrared-safe way. The two-loop coefficient of the beta function is generated by the one-loop ultraviolet renormalization of the quantum gauge field via nonlocal terms which are infrared divergent on shell. We also discuss the connection of the beta function to the flow of the Wilsonian coupling.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures. Reference added, minor correction

Objectives: 1) to compare mandibular bone regeneration by applying autologous bone, platelet-rich plasma and two biomaterials (synthetic calcium hydroxyapatite, and demineralized bone matrix), and thus establish the potential benefits of these biomaterials in the regeneration of postextraction alveolar bone, 2) to identify wich of them accelerates more bone regeneration and 3) to determine whether there are differences in the postoperative period (pain, swelling, trismus, infection) depending on the material used. Study Design: It consists in a prospective, controlled (with a split- mouth design) and double blinded study. We use as a model an easily reproducible non-critical bone defect: the defect that remains after extraction of mandibular impacted third molar. The study design is based on the extraction of two mandibular impacted third molars in a patient during the same surgical procedure by the same surgeon. We assessed postoperative clinical data, and short, medium and long term neoformation of alveolar bone after extraction. We compared the two sockets (right and left), which had been grafted in a different way with the various elements mentioned above. In addition, we compared the postoperative inflammatory symptoms between groups. Results: The highest acceleration in bone formation was observed in groups in which we used autologous bone and demineralized bone matrix. There were no statistically significant differences between groups regarding pain, swelling, trismus and infection throughout the postoperative period. Conclusions: According to the results of our study, autologous bone persists as the gold standard material for bone regeneration. Among the assessed biomaterials, demineralized bone matrix has yielded the best results obtained. No significant differences in the postoperative (pain, swelling, trismus and infectious events) were observed, depending on the type of material used as a graft

Background: Virtual communities of practice (vCoPs) facilitate online learning via the exchange of experiences and knowledge between interested participants. Compared to other communities, vCoPs need to overcome technological structures and specific barriers. Our objective was to pilot the acceptability and feasibility of a vCoP aimed at improving the attitudes of primary care professionals to the empowerment of patients with chronic conditions. Methods: We used a qualitative approach based on 2 focus groups: one composed of 6 general practitioners and the other of 6 practice nurses. Discussion guidelines on the topics to be investigated were provided to the moderator. Sessions were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was performed using the ATLAS-ti software. Results: The available operating systems and browsers and the lack of suitable spaces and time were reported as the main difficulties with the vCoP. The vCoP was perceived to be a flexible learning mode that provided up-to-date resources applicable to routine practice and offered a space for the exchange of experiences and approaches. Conclusions: The results from this pilot study show that the vCoP was considered useful for learning how to empower patients. However, while vCoPs have the potential to facilitate learning and as shown create professional awareness regarding patient empowerment, attention needs to be paid to technological and access issues and the time demands on professionals. We collected relevant inputs to improve the features, content and educational methods to be included in further vCoP implementation. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02757781. Aims Raised blood pressure (BP) is the biggest contributor to mortality and disease burden worldwide and fewer than half of those with hypertension are aware of it. May Measurement Month (MMM) is a global campaign set up in 2017, to raise awareness of high BP and as a pragmatic solution to a lack of formal screening worldwide. The 2018 campaign was expanded, aiming to include more participants and countries. Methods and results Eighty-nine countries participated in MMM 2018. Volunteers (≥18 years) were recruited through opportunistic sampling at a variety of screening sites. Each participant had three BP measurements and completed a questionnaire on demographic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg, or taking antihypertensive medication. In total, 74.9% of screenees provided three BP readings. Multiple imputation using chained equations was used to impute missing readings. 1 504 963 individuals (mean age 45.3 years; 52.4% female) were screened. After multiple imputation, 502 079 (33.4%) individuals had hypertension, of whom 59.5% were aware of their diagnosis and 55.3% were taking antihypertensive medication. Of those on medication, 60.0% were controlled and of all hypertensives, 33.2% were controlled. We detected 224 285 individuals with untreated hypertension and 111 214 individuals with inadequately treated (systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg) hypertension. Conclusion May Measurement Month expanded significantly compared with 2017, including more participants in more countries. The campaign identified over 335 000 adults with untreated or inadequately treated hypertension. In the absence of systematic screening programmes, MMM was effective at raising awareness at least among these individuals at risk

The role of defects in microwave and conventionally synthesized LaCoO3 perovskite

    Get PDF
In this work we investigate the magnetic, dielectric and charge transport properties of LaCoO3 (LCO) synthesized by two different techniques: microwave assisted and conventionally heated ceramic synthesis. The rapid microwave synthesis conditions are far away from thermodynamic equilibrium and are found to lead to modified crystal defect properties as compared to conventional synthesis. The thermally induced magnetic spin state transition at Ts1 ≈ 80 K is exemplified by temperature (T)-dependent dielectric spectroscopy data, which reveal the appearance of an additional dielectric contribution that is correlated to the transition. Magnetisation, M vs T, and electrical resistivity, ρ vs T, curves show that the additional dielectric phase is strongly influenced by magnetic defects and may be associated with higher spin state clusters in a magnetic spin-state coexistence scenario. We suggest that defects such as oxygen vacancies act as magnetic nucleation centres across the spin state transition Ts1 for the formation of higher spin state clusters in LCO perovskites

Analysis of HIF-1 alpha and HIF-2 alpha in dendritic cells stimulated under hypoxic conditions Barroeta Seijas AB.1, Filippi I.2, Vitale S. 1, Simonetti S. 3, Naldini A.2, Di Rosa F.1 1 Institute of Biology and Molecular Pathology (IBPM)- National Research Council (CNR), Rome, Italy 2 Department of Physiology, University of Siena, Siena, Italy. 3 Department of Molecular Medicine, University of Rome “Sapienza”, Rome, Italy Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen-presenting cells that have a pivotal role in linking innate and acquired immunity, and in the maintenance of selftolerance. DCs can activate resting T cells in spleen and lymph nodes, stimulate effector T cells in inflamed tissues and contribute to maintenance of memory T cells in different organs, including the bone marrow (BM). Alternatively activated DCs have been involved in regulation of angiogenesis during chronic inflammation. Inflamed tissues and BM share a common feature: a low oxygen tension. Under hypoxic conditions, different levels of hypoxia inducible factors HIF-1 alpha and HIF-2 alpha modulate the expression of a variety of genes related to apoptosis, cell migration, metabolic changes necessaries for adaptation to the hypoxic environment. Although it is generally believed that hypoxic conditions are inhibitory for protective immune responses, a clear picture of the hypoxia-induced pathways in DCs has not emerged yet. We aim to investigate the molecular and functional changes induced by hypoxia in mouse BM-derived DCs. Specifically, we will evaluate the regulation of the transcription factors HIF-1 alpha and HIF-2 alpha in DCs stimulated with classical (e.g. LPS) and alternative stimuli (e.g. IL-10), under either normoxic or hypoxic conditions. We will investigate the production by stimulated DCs of molecular mediators affecting both angiogenesis and T cell responses. We expect to gain more information on the cross-talk between angiogenic molecules and cytokines involved in immune regulation, occurring both in hypoxic lymphoid organs and inflamed tissues
