SRB Environment Evaluation and Analysis. Volume 3: ASRB Plume Induced Environments
Contract NAS8-37891 was expanded in late 1989 to initiate analysis of Shuttle plume induced environments as a result of the substitution of the Advanced Solid Rocket Booster (ASRB) for the Redesigned Solid Rocket Booster (RSRB). To support this analysis, REMTECH became involved in subscale and full-scale solid rocket motor test programs which further expanded the scope of work. Later contract modifications included additional tasks to produce initial design cycle environments and to specify development flight instrumentation. Volume 3 of the final report describes these analyses and contains a summary of reports resulting from various studies
Psychosocial and behavioural correlates of attitudes towards antiretroviral therapy (ART) in a sample of South African mineworkers
Despite being one of the worst affected sectors in South Africa, the mining sector has proven to be one of the most active in intervention efforts in the fight against HIV and AIDS (Ellis, 2007). Owing to low uptake rates of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in mining companies in recent years (Connelly & Rosen, 2006) and the positive relationship between attitudes towards ART and ART uptake (Cooper et al., 2002; Horne, Cooper, Gellaitry, Leake, & Fisher, 2007), this study sought to describe and investigate the psychosocial and behavioural correlates of attitudes towards ART in a sample of South African mineworkers. A total of 806 mineworkers from a large South African mine participated in this quantitative study. Despite a high rate of HIV testing behaviour (83.0%) as well as favourable attitudes towards ART, analysis indicated that temporary employees and contractors were more vulnerable in terms of HIV risk, HIV testing behaviours and ART knowledge and attitudes. Employees who had more positive attitudes towards ART were more knowledgeable of ART and, importantly, had a more favourable attitude towards the mine’s HIV/AIDS treatment programme. These findings are discussed in relation to the low ART uptake rates in this context and recommendations for the improvement of ART uptake amongst employees at this mining site.Keywords: mining sector, workplace, ART uptake, attitudes.Le secteur minier reste l’un des secteurs les plus affectés par le VIH et SIDA en Afrique du Sud et aussi l’un des plus actifs dans la lutte contre la maladie (Ellis, 2007). En raison du faible taux d’utilisation de la thérapie antirétrovirale (ART) dans les années récentes par des compagnies minières (Connelly & Rosen, 2006) et les attitudes positives envers ART et ART absorption (Cooper et al., 2002; Horne, Cooper, Gellaitry, Leake, & Fisher, 2007) pour trouver des solutions pour les malades du VIH/SIDA, cette étude á pour objectif d’examiner les comportements psychosociaux et le traitement de la thérapie antirétrovirale d’un groupe de mineurs Sud-Africains. Huit cent six mineurs Sud-Africains ont participé à cette étude quantitative. Soit un taux de dépistage VIH élevé (83.0%) et des attitudes très favorables envers ART, les analyses indiquent qu’en termes de risque du VIH les employés temporaires et les entrepreneurs sont plus exposés á la maladie. Mais cependant, les employés qui sont bien informés de la méthode ART grâce à la connaissance et à l’information bénéficient d’un programme de traitement contre le VIH/SIDA. Ces résultats font l’objet de discussion sur le faible taux d’ART dans ce contexte et quelques recommandations et améliorations de l’absorption de l’ART pour les employés de ce site minier
Social Assessment of Section 3 of the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road: Brynmawr to Tredegar
The aim of this report is to provide a social assessment of the impacts of Section 3 of the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road: Brynmawr to Tredegar, using a mixed methods approach which adapts and builds on the UK WebTAG appraisal guidance units 4.1 and 4.2. We define social assessment in this document as a study of the social and distributional impacts which estimate the impacts of the implemented scheme at the point of opening rather than a detailed ex-ante appraisal. In the absence of detailed ex-ante appraisal, this report sets a baseline from which future evaluation may be conducted. This is the first application of a new mixed methods approach to social assessment of the impacts of transport infrastructure investment in the UK. It was commissioned by the Welsh Government in specific recognition of the need for improved guidance in this area of project delivery. The results reported here, along with its accompanying annexes, also contribute to greater understanding of social and distributional impacts, which builds upon and extends the current quantitative approach in WelTAG / WebTAG. This will hopefully lead to better understanding of the wider social effects of transport projects in order to inform future considerations as to how new transport schemes affect wellbeing
IoT Expunge: Implementing Verifiable Retention of IoT Data
The growing deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) systems aims to ease the
daily life of end-users by providing several value-added services. However, IoT
systems may capture and store sensitive, personal data about individuals in the
cloud, thereby jeopardizing user-privacy. Emerging legislation, such as
California's CalOPPA and GDPR in Europe, support strong privacy laws to protect
an individual's data in the cloud. One such law relates to strict enforcement
of data retention policies. This paper proposes a framework, entitled IoT
Expunge that allows sensor data providers to store the data in cloud platforms
that will ensure enforcement of retention policies. Additionally, the cloud
provider produces verifiable proofs of its adherence to the retention policies.
Experimental results on a real-world smart building testbed show that IoT
Expunge imposes minimal overheads to the user to verify the data against data

The Source of Three-minute Magneto-acoustic Oscillations in Coronal Fans
We use images of high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, obtained
using both ground- and space-based instrumentation, to investigate the coupling
between wave phenomena observed at numerous heights in the solar atmosphere.
Intensity oscillations of 3 minutes are observed to encompass photospheric
umbral dot structures, with power at least three orders-of-magnitude higher
than the surrounding umbra. Simultaneous chromospheric velocity and intensity
time series reveal an 87 \pm 8 degree out-of-phase behavior, implying the
presence of standing modes created as a result of partial wave reflection at
the transition region boundary. An average blue-shifted Doppler velocity of
~1.5 km/s, in addition to a time lag between photospheric and chromospheric
oscillatory phenomena, confirms the presence of upwardly-propagating slow-mode
waves in the lower solar atmosphere. Propagating oscillations in EUV intensity
are detected in simultaneous coronal fan structures, with a periodicity of 172
\pm 17 s and a propagation velocity of 45 \pm 7 km/s. Numerical simulations
reveal that the damping of the magneto-acoustic wave trains is dominated by
thermal conduction. The coronal fans are seen to anchor into the photosphere in
locations where large-amplitude umbral dot oscillations manifest. Derived
kinetic temperature and emission measure time-series display prominent
out-of-phase characteristics, and when combined with the previously established
sub-sonic wave speeds, we conclude that the observed EUV waves are the coronal
counterparts of the upwardly-propagating magneto-acoustic slow-modes detected
in the lower solar atmosphere. Thus, for the first time, we reveal how the
propagation of 3 minute magneto-acoustic waves in solar coronal structures is a
direct result of amplitude enhancements occurring in photospheric umbral dots.Comment: Accepted into ApJ (13 pages and 10 figures
Renminbi Internationalisation: Precedents and Implications
While it is commonly assumed that there are no known precedents against which to benchmark the internationalisation of the Renminbi (RMB), this paper argues that the PRCs own development experience provides a useful perspective on the internationalisation debate. In particular it indicates that lessons can be learnt from both the successes and the shortcomings of efforts to internationalise the RMB in the 1970s. During this period state-owned banks in Hong Kong played a central role in mobilising finance for foreign trade. Access to Hong Kong’s developed financial institutions allowed the PRC to maximise receipts from foreign trade as well as minimise the risks of undue swings in capital flows. The paper shows that although China no longer faces foreign exchange scarcity, economic reforms have not yet resolved vulnerabilities in China’s financial institutions and as such Hong Kong’s role in mitigating the risk of undue capital swings remains
Effect of lithographically-induced strain relaxation on the magnetic domain configuration in microfabricated epitaxially grown Fe81Ga19
We investigate the role of lithographically-induced strain relaxation in a micron-scaled device fabricated from epitaxial thin films of the magnetostrictive alloy Fe81Ga19. The strain relaxation due to lithographic patterning induces a magnetic anisotropy that competes with the magnetocrystalline and shape induced anisotropy to play a crucial role in stabilising a flux-closing domain pattern. We use magnetic imaging, micromagnetic calculations and linear elastic modelling to investigate a region close to the edges of an etched structure. This highly-strained edge region has a significant influence on the magnetic domain configuration due to an induced magnetic anisotropy resulting from the inverse magnetostriction effect. We investigate the competition between the strain-induced and shape-induced anisotropy energies, and the resultant stable domain configurations, as the width of the bar is reduced to the nanoscale range. Understanding this behaviour will be important when designing hybrid magneto-electric spintronic devices based on highly magnetostrictive materials
Radiative emission of solar features in the Ca II K line: comparison of measurements and models
We study the radiative emission of various types of solar features, such as
quiet Sun, enhanced network, plage, and bright plage regions, identified on
filtergrams taken in the Ca II K line. We analysed fulldisk images obtained
with the PSPT, by using three interference filters that sample the Ca II K line
with different bandpasses. We studied the dependence of the radiative emission
of disk features on the filter bandpass. We also performed a NLTE spectral
synthesis of the Ca II K line integrated over the bandpass of PSPT filters. The
synthesis was carried out by utilizing both the PRD and CRD with the most
recent set of semi empirical atmosphere models in the literature and some
earlier atmosphere models. We measured the CLV of intensity values for various
solar features identified on PSPT images and compared the results obtained with
those derived from the synthesis. We find that CRD calculations derived using
the most recent quiet Sun model, on average, reproduce the measured values of
the quiet Sun regions slightly more accurately than PRD computations with the
same model. This may reflect that the utilized atmospheric model was computed
assuming CRD. Calculations with PRD on earlier quiet Sun model atmospheres
reproduce measured quantities with a similar accuracy as to that achieved here
by applying CRD to the recent model. We also find that the median contrast
values measured for most of the identified bright features, disk positions, and
filter widths are, on average, a factor 1.9 lower than those derived from PRD
simulations performed using the recent bright feature models. The discrepancy
between measured and modeled values decreases by 12% after taking into account
straylight effects on PSPT images. PRD computations on either the most recent
or the earlier atmosphere models of bright features reproduce measurements from
