Hydrodynamics from the Dp-brane
We complete the computation of viscous transport coefficients in the near
horizon geometries that arise from a stack of black Dp-branes for p=2,...,6 in
the decoupling limit. The main new result is the obtention of the bulk
viscosity which, for all p, is found to be related to the speed of sound by the
simple relation \zeta/\eta = -2(v_s^2-1/p). For completeness the shear
viscosity is rederived from gravitational perturbations in the shear and scalar
channels. We comment on technical issues like the counterterms needed, or the
possible dependence on the conformal frame.Comment: 15 page

Chern-Simons diffusion rate in a holographic Yang-Mills theory
Using holography, we compute the Chern-Simons diffusion rate of 4d gauge
theories constructed by wrapping D4-branes on a circle. In the model with
antiperiodic boundary conditions for fermions, we find that it scales like
in the high-temperature phase. With periodic fermions, this scaling
persists at low temperatures. The scaling is reminiscent of 6d hydrodynamic
behavior even at temperatures small compared to compactification scales of the
M5-branes from which the D4-branes descend. We offer a holographic explanation
of this behavior by adding a new entry to the known map between D4 and M5
hydrodynamics, and suggest a field theory explanation based on "deconstruction"
or "fractionization".Comment: 13 pages, misstatement in published version about low temperature

Stellar Populations Found in the Central kpc of Four Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift
We investigate the star formation history of the central regions of four
Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs). LCBGs are blue (B-V<0.6), compact
(MU_B<21.5 mag arcsec^-2) galaxies with absolute magnitudes M_B brighter than
-17.5. The LCBGs analyzed here are located at 0.436<z<0.525. They are among the
most luminous (M_B < -20.5), blue (B-V < 0.4) and high surface brightness (MU_B
< 19.0 mag arcsec^-2) of this population. The observational data used were
obtained with the HST/STIS spectrograph, the HST/WF/PC-2 camera and the
HST/NICMOS first camera. We find evidence for multiple stellar populations. One
of them is identified as the ionizing population, and the other one corresponds
to the underlying stellar generation.
The estimated masses of the inferred populations are compatible with the
dynamical masses, which are typically 2--10x 10^9 M_sun. Our models also
indicate that the first episodes of star formation the presented LCBGs
underwent happened between 5 and 7 Gyr ago.
We compare the stellar populations found in LCBGs with the stellar
populations present in bright, local HII galaxies, nearby spheroidal systems
and Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies. It turns out that the underlying stellar
populations of LCBGs are similar yet bluer to those of local HII galaxies. It
is also the case that the passive color evolution of the LCBGs could convert
them into local Spheroidal galaxies if no further episode of star formation
takes place. Our results help to impose constraints on evolutionary scenarios
for the population of LCBGs found commonly at intermediate redshifts.Comment: 35 pages, 10 Figures. Accepted for publication in AJ. Compile with

Wild felid species richness affected by a corridor in the Lacandona forest, Mexico
We analyzed the effect of a structural corridor, defined as a strip of vegetation connecting two habitat patches, on the richness and habitat occupancy of felids on three sites in Marqués de Comillas, Chiapas, one with two isolated forest patches, the second with a structural corridor, and the third inside the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve. We found only two species (L. pardalis and H. yagouaroundi) in the isolated forest patches, five species in the structural corridor, and four species inside the Reserve. The corridor did not significantly affect occupancy, but due to the low detection rates, further investigation is needed to rule out differences. Our results highlight the need to manage habitat connectivity in the remaining forests in order to preserve the felid community of Marqués de Comillas, Chiapas, México
Barred Galaxies in the Coma Cluster
We use ACS data from the HST Treasury survey of the Coma cluster (z~0.02) to
study the properties of barred galaxies in the Coma core, the densest
environment in the nearby Universe. This study provides a complementary data
point for studies of barred galaxies as a function of redshift and environment.
From ~470 cluster members brighter than M_I = -11 mag, we select a sample of
46 disk galaxies (S0--Im) based on visual classification. The sample is
dominated by S0s for which we find an optical bar fraction of 47+/-11% through
ellipse fitting and visual inspection. Among the bars in the core of the Coma
cluster, we do not find any very large (a_bar > 2 kpc) bars. Comparison to
other studies reveals that while the optical bar fraction for S0s shows only a
modest variation across low-to-intermediate density environments (field to
intermediate-density clusters), it can be higher by up to a factor of ~2 in the
very high-density environment of the rich Coma cluster core.Comment: Proceedings of the Bash symposium, to appear in the Astronomical

Heavy quarks in a magnetic field
The motion of a heavy charged quark in a magnetic field is analyzed in the
vacuum of strongly coupled CFT. The motion of the quark is dissipative. It
moves in spiral until it eventually comes to rest. The world-sheet geometry is
locally AdS_2 but has a time dependent horizon. The string profile in the
static gauge extends from the boundary till a point where an embedding
singularity exists. Connections with other circular string motions are
established.Comment: (v3) Misprints corrected, discussion on moving horizons improved and

Arc-continent collision and orocline formation: Closing of the Central American seaway
Closure of the Central American seaway was a local tectonic event with potentially global biotic and environmental repercussions. We report geochronological (six U/Pb LA-ICP-MS zircon ages) and geochemical (19 XRF and ICP-MS analyses) data from the Isthmus of Panama that allow definition of a distinctive succession of plateau sequences to subduction-related protoarc to arc volcaniclastic rocks intruded by Late Cretaceous to middle Eocene intermediate plutonic rocks (67.6 ± 1.4 Ma to 41.1 ± 0.7 Ma). Paleomagnetic analyses (24 sites, 192 cores) in this same belt reveal large counterclockwise vertical-axis rotations (70.9° ± 6.7°), and moderate clockwise rotations (between 40° ± 4.1° and 56.2° ± 11.1°) on either side of an east-west trending fault at the apex of the Isthmus (Rio Gatun Fault), consistent with Isthmus curvature. An Oligocene-Miocene arc crosscuts the older, deformed and segmented arc sequences, and shows no significant vertical-axis rotation or deformation. There are three main stages of deformation: 1) left-lateral, strike-slip offset of the arc (∼100 km), and counterclockwise vertical-axis rotation of western arc segments between 38 and 28 Ma; 2) clockwise rotation of central arc segments between 28 and 25 Ma; and 3) orocline tightening after 25 Ma. When this reconstruction is placed in a global plate tectonic framework, and published exhumation data is added, the Central American seaway disappears at 15 Ma, suggesting that by the time of northern hemisphere glaciation, deep-water circulation had long been severed in Central America
The impact of a large object with Jupiter in July 2009
On 2009 July 19, we observed a single, large impact on Jupiter at a
planetocentric latitude of 55^{\circ}S. This and the Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9)
impacts on Jupiter in 1994 are the only planetary-scale impacts ever observed.
The 2009 impact had an entry trajectory opposite and with a lower incidence
angle than that of SL9. Comparison of the initial aerosol cloud debris
properties, spanning 4,800 km east-west and 2,500 km north-south, with those
produced by the SL9 fragments, and dynamical calculations of pre-impact orbit,
indicate that the impactor was most probably an icy body with a size of 0.5-1
km. The collision rate of events of this magnitude may be five to ten times
more frequent than previously thought. The search for unpredicted impacts, such
as the current one, could be best performed in 890-nm and K (2.03-2.36 {\mu}m)
filters in strong gaseous absorption, where the high-altitude aerosols are more
reflective than Jupiter's primary cloud.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
