    Perception of Three-Dimensional Shape from Structure-from-Motion (SFM) Stimuli in Infancy

    Three-dimensional (3D) object perception is critical for comprehending and interacting with the world. It develops during infancy and continues through adulthood. One powerful cue used for object perception is uniform coherent motion. The present paper first briefly reviews the current literature concerning object perception using random-dot stimuli and structure-from-motion (SFM) displays. To extend our knowledge in this area, two new studies were conducted to further our understanding of how infants process 3D shape in SFM stimuli. Study 1 examined infants of two age groups (3-5 month-olds and 8-9 month-olds) in a familiarization phase and a test phase. In the familiarization phase, infants were exposed to one of two SFM shapes (cube or cylinder) and in the test phase infants viewed both SFM shapes side-by-side. Extraction of shape was measured through novelty preferences. Results of Study 1 suggest that both age groups successfully extracted 3D shape. Study 2 served as a replication and extension, with the added control for the variable rotational axis. When this variable was controlled for, 3-5 month-olds failed to show a novelty preference during the test phase. These results suggest not only that infants were attending to both the global shape presented in the SFM stimuli as well as the detailed component of the rotational axis of the stimuli, but also that adding the extra change in the component of rotational axis to SFM stimuli makes the task of extracting shape more difficult for infants. These findings contribute to the infant literature by furthering the understanding of infant shape perception

    Attention to Explicit and Implicit Contrast in Verb Learning

    Contrast information could be useful for verb learning, but few studies have examined children\u27s ability to use this type of information. Contrast may be useful when children are told explicitly that different verbs apply, or when they hear two different verbs in a single context. Three studies examine children\u27s attention to different types of contrast as they learn new verbs. Study 1 shows that 3 Âœ-year-olds can use both implicit contrast (“I\u27m meeking it. I\u27m koobing it.”) and explicit contrast (“I\u27m meeking it. I\u27m not meeking it.”) when learning a new verb, while a control group\u27s responses did not differ from chance. Study 2 shows that even though children at this age who hear explicit contrast statements differ from a control group, they do not reliably extend a newly learned verb to events with new objects. In Study 3, children in three age groups were given both comparison and contrast information, not in blocks of trials as in past studies, but in a procedure that interleaved both cues. Results show that while 2 Âœ-year-olds were unable to use these cues when asked to compare and contrast, by 3 Âœ, children are beginning to be able to process these cues and use them to influence their verb extensions, and by 4 Âœ years, children are proficient at integrating multiple cues when learning and extending new verbs. Together these studies examine children\u27s use of contrast in verb learning, a potentially important source of information that has been rarely studied

    Motion Processing and From-from-Apparent-Motion in Infancy

    Motion-carried information is a salient visual cue used in object perception to parse form in the optical array. The present research examined infants’ ability to extract form shapes in apparent motion stimuli, controlling for color and luminance information within the displays. In these form-from-apparent-motion (FFAM) displays, red “background” random dots are set against an overall white background, with a portion of the random dots set as green “foreground” dots. Although the dots do not move, the portion of the green-colored dots change over successive frames, giving an observer the impression that an object is moving. Infants in two age groups (11-13- and 14-18-month olds) were shown FFAM stimuli in familiarization/visual paired comparison (F/VPC) and discrimination paradigms. Infants in both paradigms extracted shape from apparent motion given luminance cues alone, and color and luminance cues co-varying; but failed to extract shape given color cues alone (Studies 1-2). Given only color cues, infants required denser random-dot displays to extract shape from apparent motion (Study 3). It is possible that both neural pathway separation between dorsal and ventral streams, as well as the ongoing development of edge-insensitive/edge-sensitive processing both play a role in the present results

    Infants Prefer Female Body Phenotypes; Infant Girls Prefer They Have an Hourglass Shape

    Adolescents and adults show preferences for male and female body shapes consistent with evolutionary theories of reproductive fitness and mate selection. However, when these preferences for females with narrow waists (i.e., 0.7 waist-to-hip ratio) and men with broad shoulders (i.e., mesomorphic body shape) emerge during the lifespan is largely unknown. To address this knowledge gap, eye-movements were tracked in 144 infants (3 to 18 months of age) during computer presentation of three-dimensional human figures varying in body features thought relevant for reproductive success (e.g., secondary sex characteristics, waist-to-hip ratio). When presented with pairs of figures differing in apparent sex, male and female infants looked significantly longer at the female figure compared to the male figure, a new finding that extends previous research showing preferences for female faces in infancy. When presented with same-sex figures differing in characteristics associated with mate value, male and female infants looked longer at a low mate value male (i.e., an endomorphic body type) compared to a high mate value male (i.e., a mesomorphic body type), a finding that replicates the results of previous research. In addition, the novel use of high and low mate value female figures showed a sex difference in visual attention, such that female infants looked longer at the high mate value female figure compared to the low mate female figure whereas male infants showed the opposite pattern of results. In sum, these findings suggest that infants generally do not possess preferences for adult-defined attractive male body shapes. However, infant girls’ greater attention to a female figure with an adult-preferred waist-to-hip ratio raises the possibility that evolved preferences for 0.7 waist-to-hip ratio influence girls’ later preference for toys representing females with an hourglass shape, perhaps supporting elaboration of adult social behaviors that enhance reproductive success (e.g., cooperative breeding)

    Is 8:30 a.m. Still Too Early to Start School? A 10:00 a.m. School Start Time Improves Health and Performance of Students Aged 13-16.

    While many studies have shown the benefits of later school starts, including better student attendance, higher test scores, and improved sleep duration, few have used starting times later than 9:00 a.m. Here we report on the implementation and impact of a 10 a.m. school start time for 13 to 16-year-old students. A 4-year observational study using a before-after-before (A-B-A) design was carried out in an English state-funded high school. School start times were changed from 8:50 a.m. in study year 0, to 10 a.m. in years 1-2, and then back to 8:50 a.m. in year 3. Measures of student health (absence due to illness) and academic performance (national examination results) were used for all students. Implementing a 10 a.m. start saw a decrease in student illness after 2 years of over 50% (p < 0.0005 and effect size: Cohen's d = 1.07), and reverting to an 8:50 a.m. start reversed this improvement, leading to an increase of 30% in student illness (p < 0.0005 and Cohen's d = 0.47). The 10:00 a.m. start was associated with a 12% increase in the value-added number of students making good academic progress (in standard national examinations) that was significant (<0.0005) and equivalent to 20% of the national benchmark. These results show that changing to a 10:00 a.m. high school start time can greatly reduce illness and improve academic performance. Implementing school start times later than 8:30 a.m., which may address the circadian delay in adolescents' sleep rhythms more effectively for evening chronotypes, appears to have few costs and substantial benefits

    Cross-sectional associations between sleep duration, sedentary time, physical activity, and adiposity indicators among Canadian preschool-aged children using compositional analyses

    Abstract Background Sleep duration, sedentary behaviour, and physical activity are three co-dependent behaviours that fall on the movement/non-movement intensity continuum. Compositional data analyses provide an appropriate method for analyzing the association between co-dependent movement behaviour data and health indicators. The objectives of this study were to examine: (1) the combined associations of the composition of time spent in sleep, sedentary behaviour, light-intensity physical activity (LPA), and moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) with adiposity indicators; and (2) the association of the time spent in sleep, sedentary behaviour, LPA, or MVPA with adiposity indicators relative to the time spent in the other behaviours in a representative sample of Canadian preschool-aged children. Methods Participants were 552 children aged 3 to 4 years from cycles 2 and 3 of the Canadian Health Measures Survey. Sedentary time, LPA, and MVPA were measured with Actical accelerometers (Philips Respironics, Bend, OR USA), and sleep duration was parental reported. Adiposity indicators included waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) z-scores based on World Health Organization growth standards. Compositional data analyses were used to examine the cross-sectional associations. Results The composition of movement behaviours was significantly associated with BMI z-scores (p = 0.006) but not with WC (p = 0.718). Further, the time spent in sleep (BMI z-score: γ sleep  = −0.72; p = 0.138; WC: γ sleep  = −1.95; p = 0.285), sedentary behaviour (BMI z-score: γ SB  = 0.19; p = 0.624; WC: γ SB  = 0.87; p = 0.614), LPA (BMI z-score: γ LPA  = 0.62; p = 0.213, WC: γ LPA  = 0.23; p = 0.902), or MVPA (BMI z-score: γ MVPA  = −0.09; p = 0.733, WC: γ MVPA  = 0.08; p = 0.288) relative to the other behaviours was not significantly associated with the adiposity indicators. Conclusions This study is the first to use compositional analyses when examining associations of co-dependent sleep duration, sedentary time, and physical activity behaviours with adiposity indicators in preschool-aged children. The overall composition of movement behaviours appears important for healthy BMI z-scores in preschool-aged children. Future research is needed to determine the optimal movement behaviour composition that should be promoted in this age group

    Consequences of Choosing Different Settings When Processing Hip-Based Accelerometry Data From Older Adults: A Practical Approach Using Baseline Data From the SITLESS Study

    Accurately measuring older adults’ physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) using accelerometers is essential, as both are important markers of health. This study aimed to highlight how steps taken during data processing may affect key hip-based accelerometry outcomes in older adults, using a selection of baseline accelerometry data (n = 658) from the SITLESS study. Different analytical parameters tested included wear-time algorithms, use of low-frequency extension (LFE) filter, epoch length, and minimum and maximum daily wear-time thresholds. These were compared against vertical axis counts per minute (CPM), vector magnitude (VM) CPM, SB, light PA, moderate-to-vigorous PA, step counts, and wear-time percentage. Differences in settings across the analytical parameters were assessed using paired sample t-tests and repeated measures ANOVAs using Bonferroni correction. Using the “Choi” versus “Troiano” wear-time algorithm resulted in a higher percentage wear-time. Most SB and PA outcomes were significantly different across wear-time algorithms (p &lt; .001). This was similar when using the LFE filter versus normal filter (p &lt; .001). Using 10-second epoch length increased daily SB time (between +75.7 and +79.2 minutes) compared to 60-second. Most SB and PA outcomes significantly changed comparing minimum-wear-time thresholds of 360, 480, 600, and 720 minutes per day (p &lt; .001). Applying a log-diary with a ≄1140-minute threshold had a significant impact on vertical axis CPM, VM CPM, SB, and light PA outcomes (p &lt; .001). This study demonstrates the potential variability in the number of participants being included in studies and reported SB and PA levels when processing older adults’ accelerometry data dependent on the analytical procedures utilized

    Dietary and Lifestyle Patterns in the Spanish Pediatric Population (One to <10 Years Old): Design, Protocol, and Methodology of the EsNuPI Study

    The interest in a healthy diet and lifestyle during the early stages of life increased, pointing out its role in the development of noncommunicable chronic diseases throughout adult life. Dietary habits and dietary patterns begin to be established in early childhood and persist during adulthood. Therefore, the EsNuPI (“Nutritional Study in Spanish Pediatric Population”) study aims to depict the dietary patterns, physical activity, and sedentary behaviors in Spanish children aged from one to <10 years old. This prospective, cross-sectional, observational study recruited a total of 1514 children from Spanish cities with >50,000 inhabitants, stratified by Nielsen areas. Participants were involved in one face-to-face survey, followed by a telephone survey after at least one week. Information about dietary intake and habits was obtained using a quantitative food frequency questionnaire and two 24-h dietary recalls. Physical activity and sedentary behaviors were registered using a specific questionnaire based on a seven-day record. Data were processed and stratified by categorical variables to be statistically analyzed in order to meet the study objectives. This study is the first of its kind in a Spanish reference population of this age range and the first to evaluate whether the consumption of adapted milk formulas and dairy products is associated with healthier dietary patterns and better diet quality and lifestyles in this group.This research was funded by Instituto Puleva de Nutrición (IPN)

    This chapter focuses on the physical health of families. The components of physical health discussed in this chapter include diet and nutrition, physical activity, sleep patterns, medical self-care, smoking as well as alcohol and drugs. Family members’ health behaviors (e.g., smoking, alcohol consumption, eating, exercise, and sleep) show more similarity than would be expected by chance. An individuals’ quality of life (QoL) is closely related to the QoL of those around them, be it their spouse, children, or parents. As a result, any kind of chronic sickness present within the family has the potential to affect the lives of the other members. Health problems in any family member were associated with a high incidence of mental health issues in other family members. Involvement of families can be effective in health promotion programs
