Field induced magnetic transition and metastability in Co substituted
A detailed investigation of first order ferrimagnetic (FRI) to
antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition in Co (15%) doped is carried out.
These measurements demonstrate anomalous thermomagnetic irreversibility and
glass-like frozen FRI phase at low temperatures. The irreversibility arising
between the supercooling and superheating spinodals is distinguised in an
ingenious way from the irreversibility arising due to kinetic arrest. Field
annealing measurements shows reentrant FRI-AFM-FRI transition with increasing
temperature. These measurements also show that kinetic arrest band and
supercooling band are anitcorrelated i.e regions which are kinetically arrested
at higher temperature have lower supercooling temperature and vice versa.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Constraints on thick disc and halo parameters from HST photometry of field stars in the Galaxy
We analyse a sample of over 1000 stars from 32 fields imaged in the V and I
bands with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera, on board of the Hubble Space
Telescope. The fields are located at Galactic latitudes | b | >= 15deg and in
various directions on the sky. We consider models for the structure of the
Galaxy with different choices for the main parameters governing the shape and
luminosity function of the thick disk and stellar halo. Comparing model
predictions with the observed colour-magnitude diagram we are able to rule out
an increasing or flat stellar luminosity function at the low-luminosity end. We
also rule out large values of the vertical scale height of the thick disc, z_0,
finding it to be in the range 800 <= z_0 <= 1200 pc. As for the local density
normalization, values within the range 4 % <= n_0 <= 8 % seem to better
reproduce the data. Our data essentially rule out a flattened stellar halo (c/a
<~ 0.5) or models with both large local normalization and effective radii.Comment: 7 pages LaTeX, 9 Postscript figure
Quantum dynamics of crystals of molecular nanomagnets inside a resonant cavity
It is shown that crystals of molecular nanomagnets exhibit enhanced magnetic
relaxation when placed inside a resonant cavity. Strong dependence of the
magnetization curve on the geometry of the cavity has been observed, providing
evidence of the coherent microwave radiation by the crystals. A similar
dependence has been found for a crystal placed between Fabry-Perot
superconducting mirrors. These observations open the possibility of building a
nanomagnetic microwave laser pumped by the magnetic field
The gut microbiota of people with asthma influences lung inflammation in gnotobiotic mice
The gut microbiota in early childhood is linked to asthma risk, but may continue to affect older patients with asthma. Here, we profile the gut microbiota of 38 children (19 asthma, median age 8) and 57 adults (17 asthma, median age 28) by 16S rRNA sequencing and find individuals with asthma harbored compositional differences from healthy controls in both adults and children. Target Selection for the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE)
The Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) is a
high-resolution infrared spectroscopic survey spanning all Galactic
environments (i.e., bulge, disk, and halo), with the principal goal of
constraining dynamical and chemical evolution models of the Milky Way. APOGEE
takes advantage of the reduced effects of extinction at infrared wavelengths to
observe the inner Galaxy and bulge at an unprecedented level of detail. The
survey's broad spatial and wavelength coverage enables users of APOGEE data to
address numerous Galactic structure and stellar populations issues. In this
paper we describe the APOGEE targeting scheme and document its various target
classes to provide the necessary background and reference information to
analyze samples of APOGEE data with awareness of the imposed selection criteria
and resulting sample properties. APOGEE's primary sample consists of ~100,000
red giant stars, selected to minimize observational biases in age and
metallicity. We present the methodology and considerations that drive the
selection of this sample and evaluate the accuracy, efficiency, and caveats of
the selection and sampling algorithms. We also describe additional target
classes that contribute to the APOGEE sample, including numerous ancillary
science programs, and we outline the targeting data that will be included in

A Cautionary Tale: MARVELS Brown Dwarf Candidate Reveals Itself To Be A Very Long Period, Highly Eccentric Spectroscopic Stellar Binary
We report the discovery of a highly eccentric, double-lined spectroscopic
binary star system (TYC 3010-1494-1), comprising two solar-type stars that we
had initially identified as a single star with a brown dwarf companion. At the
moderate resolving power of the MARVELS spectrograph and the spectrographs used
for subsequent radial-velocity (RV) measurements (R ~ <30,000), this particular
stellar binary mimics a single-lined binary with an RV signal that would be
induced by a brown dwarf companion (Msin(i)~50 M_Jup) to a solar-type primary.
At least three properties of this system allow it to masquerade as a single
star with a very low-mass companion: its large eccentricity (e~0.8), its
relatively long period (P~238 days), and the approximately perpendicular
orientation of the semi-major axis with respect to the line of sight (omega~189
degrees). As a result of these properties, for ~95% of the orbit the two sets
of stellar spectral lines are completely blended, and the RV measurements based
on centroiding on the apparently single-lined spectrum is very well fit by an
orbit solution indicative of a brown dwarf companion on a more circular orbit
(e~0.3). Only during the ~5% of the orbit near periastron passage does the
true, double-lined nature and large RV amplitude of ~15 km/s reveal itself. The
discovery of this binary system is an important lesson for RV surveys searching
for substellar companions; at a given resolution and observing cadence, a
survey will be susceptible to these kinds of astrophysical false positives for
a range of orbital parameters. Finally, for surveys like MARVELS that lack the
resolution for a useful line bisector analysis, it is imperative to monitor the
peak of the cross-correlation function for suspicious changes in width or
shape, so that such false positives can be flagged during the candidate vetting

The rising tide of polypharmacy and drug-drug interactions:population database analysis 1995-2010
Background: The escalating use of prescribed drugs has increasingly raised concerns about polypharmacy. This study aims to examine changes in rates of polypharmacy and potentially serious drug-drug interactions in a stable geographical population between 1995 and 2010. Methods: This is a repeated cross-sectional analysis of community-dispensed prescribing data for all 310,000 adults resident in the Tayside region of Scotland in 1995 and 2010. The number of drug classes dispensed and the number of potentially serious drug-drug interactions (DDIs) in the previous 84 days were calculated, and age-sex standardised rates in 1995 and 2010 compared. Patient characteristics associated with receipt of ≥10 drugs and with the presence of one or more DDIs were examined using multilevel logistic regression to account for clustering of patients within primary care practices. Results: Between 1995 and 2010, the proportion of adults dispensed ≥5 drugs doubled to 20.8%, and the proportion dispensed ≥10 tripled to 5.8%. Receipt of ≥10 drugs was strongly associated with increasing age (20-29 years, 0.3%; ≥80 years, 24.0%; adjusted OR, 118.3; 95% CI, 99.5-140.7) but was also independently more common in people living in more deprived areas (adjusted OR most vs. least deprived quintile, 2.36; 95% CI, 2.22-2.51), and in people resident in a care home (adjusted OR, 2.88; 95% CI, 2.65-3.13). The proportion with potentially serious drug-drug interactions more than doubled to 13% of adults in 2010, and the number of drugs dispensed was the characteristic most strongly associated with this (10.9% if dispensed 2-4 drugs vs. 80.8% if dispensed ≥15 drugs; adjusted OR, 26.8; 95% CI 24.5-29.3). Conclusions: Drug regimens are increasingly complex and potentially harmful, and people with polypharmacy need regular review and prescribing optimisation. Research is needed to better understand the impact of multiple interacting drugs as used in real-world practice and to evaluate the effect of medicine optimisation interventions on quality of life and mortality.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Very Low-Mass Stellar and Substellar Companions to Solar-Like Stars from MARVELS I: A Low Mass Ratio Stellar Companion to TYC 4110-01037-1 in a 79-day Orbit
TYC 4110-01037-1 has a low-mass stellar companion, whose small mass ratio and
short orbital period are atypical amongst solar-like (Teff ~< 6000 K) binary
systems. Our analysis of TYC 4110-01037-1 reveals it to be a moderately aged
(~<5 Gyr) solar-like star having a mass of 1.07 +/- 0.08 MSun and radius of
0.99 +/- 0.18 RSun. We analyze 32 radial velocity measurements from the
SDSS-III MARVELS survey as well as 6 supporting radial velocity measurements
from the SARG spectrograph on the 3.6m TNG telescope obtained over a period of
~2 years. The best Keplerian orbital fit parameters were found to have a period
of 78.994 +/- 0.012 days, an eccentricity of 0.1095 +/- 0.0023, and a
semi-amplitude of 4199 +/- 11 m/s. We determine the minimum companion mass (if
sin i = 1) to be 97.7 +/- 5.8 MJup. The system's companion to host star mass
ratio, >0.087 +/- 0.003, places it at the lowest end of observed values for
short period stellar companions to solar-like (Teff ~< 6000 K) stars. One
possible way to create such a system would be if a triple-component stellar
multiple broke up into a short period, low q binary during the cluster
dispersal phase of its lifetime. A candidate tertiary body has been identified
in the system via single-epoch, high contrast imagery. If this object is
confirmed to be co-moving, we estimate it would be a dM4 star. We present these
results in the context of our larger-scale effort to constrain the statistics
of low mass stellar and brown dwarf companions to FGK-type stars via the

MARVELS-1: A face-on double-lined binary star masquerading as a resonant planetary system; and consideration of rare false positives in radial velocity planet searches
We have analyzed new and previously published radial velocity observations of
MARVELS-1, known to have an ostensibly substellar companion in a ~6- day orbit.
We find significant (~100 m/s) residuals to the best-fit model for the
companion, and these residuals are naively consistent with an interior giant
planet with a P = 1.965d in a nearly perfect 3:1 period commensuribility
(|Pb/Pc - 3| < 10^{-4}). We have performed several tests for the reality of
such a companion, including a dynamical analysis, a search for photometric
variability, and a hunt for contaminating stellar spectra. We find many reasons
to be critical of a planetary interpretation, including the fact that most of
the three-body dynamical solutions are unstable. We find no evidence for
transits, and no evidence of stellar photometric variability. We have
discovered two apparent companions to MARVELS-1 with adaptive optics imaging at
Keck; both are M dwarfs, one is likely bound, and the other is likely a
foreground object. We explore false-alarm scenarios inspired by various
curiosities in the data. Ultimately, a line profile and bisector analysis lead
us to conclude that the ~100 m/s residuals are an artifact of spectral
contamination from a stellar companion contributing ~15-30% of the optical
light in the system. We conclude that origin of this contamination is the
previously detected radial velocity companion to MARVELS-1, which is not, as
previously reported, a brown dwarf, but in fact a G dwarf in a face-on orbit.Comment: ApJ 770, 119. 24 pp emulate ApJ style, 12 figures (One is very
