Cold gas in the Intra Cluster Medium: implications for flow dynamics and powering optical nebulae
We show that the mechanical energy injection rate generated as the
intra-cluster medium (ICM) flows around cold clouds may be sufficient to power
the optical and near infra-red emission of nebulae observed in the central
regions of a sample of seven galaxy clusters. The energy injection rate is
extremely sensitive to the velocity difference between the ICM and cold clouds,
which may help to explain why optical and infra-red luminosity is often larger
than expected in systems containing AGNs. We also find that mass recycling is
likely to be important for the dynamics of the ICM. This effect will be
strongest in the central regions of clusters where there is more than enough
cold gas for its evaporation to contribute significantly to the density of the

Atmospheric Consequences of Cosmic Ray Variability in the Extragalactic Shock Model II: Revised ionization levels and their consequences
It has been suggested that galactic shock asymmetry induced by our galaxy's
infall toward the Virgo Cluster may be a source of periodicity in cosmic ray
exposure as the solar system oscillates perpendicular to the galactic plane.
Here we investigate a mechanism by which cosmic rays might affect terrestrial
biodiversity, ionization and dissociation in the atmosphere, resulting in
depletion of ozone and a resulting increase in the dangerous solar UVB flux on
the ground, with an improved ionization background computation averaged over a
massive ensemble (about 7 x 10^5) shower simulations. We study minimal and full
exposure to the postulated extragalactic background. The atmospheric effects
are greater than with our earlier, simplified ionization model. At the lower
end of the range effects are too small to be of serious consequence. At the
upper end of the range, ~6 % global average loss of ozone column density
exceeds that currently experienced due to effects such as accumulated
chlorofluorocarbons. The intensity is less than a nearby supernova or galactic
gamma-ray burst, but the duration would be about 10^6 times longer. Present UVB
enhancement from current ozone depletion ~3% is a documented stress on the
biosphere, but a depletion of the magnitude found at the upper end of our range
would double the global average UVB flux. For estimates at the upper end of the
range of the cosmic ray variability over geologic time, the mechanism of
atmospheric ozone depletion may provide a major biological stress, which could
easily bring about major loss of biodiversity. Future high energy astrophysical
observations will resolve the question of whether such depletion is likely.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Journal of Geophysical

Expression of monolysocardiolipin acyltransferase activity is regulated in concert with the level of cardiolipin and cardiolipin biosynthesis in the mammalian heart
BACKGROUND: Monolysocardiolipin acyltransferase (MLCL AT) catalyzes the acylation of monolysocardiolipin to cardiolipin in mammalian tissues. We previously reported that cardiac cardiolipin levels, MLCL AT and cardiolipin synthase activities were all elevated in rats made hyperthyroid by thyroxine treatment. In this study, we examined if cardiac mitochondrial MLCL AT activity was dependent upon the biosynthesis and level of cardiolipin in the heart. Rat heart mitochondrial MLCL AT activity was determined under conditions in which the levels of cardiac cardiolipin and cardiolipin synthase activity were either reduced or unaltered using four different disease models in the rat. In addition, these parameters were examined in a murine model of cardiac cell differentiation. RESULTS: In rats made hypothyroid by treatment with 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil in the drinking water for 34 days, cardiac cardiolipin content was decreased 29% (p < 0.025) and this was associated with a 32% decrease (p < 0.025) in cardiolipin synthase and a 35% reduction (p < 0.025) in MLCL AT activities. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes or hyperinsulinemia in rats did not affect cardiac cardiolipin content nor MLCL AT and cardiolipin synthase activities. Finally, cardiolipin content, MLCL AT and cardiolipin synthase activities were unaltered during murine P19 teratocarcinoma cell differentiation into cardiac myocytes. In all models, phospholipase A(2) activities were unaltered compared with controls. CONCLUSION: We propose a general model in which the expression of MLCL AT activity is regulated in concert with the biosynthesis and level of cardiolipin in the heart
Evaluation of the time-activity budgets of captive ducks (Anatidae) compared to wild counterparts

Available on open access from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordDucks are commonly housed in captive environments where their abilities for flight are constrained, either temporarily or permanently. The use of flight restraint in modern animal management is contentious and ethically questioned yet any associated impacts on behaviour remain poorly documented and evaluated. Comparison of information on wild ecology and activity of free-living individuals with information from the same species when captive-housed can reliably inform on ânaturalnessâ of behaviour patterns if standardised methods are used. This research aimed to compare the activity of several species of ducks (Order Anseriformes) with information contained in the literature, and that collected from direct observation, to identify differences between the behaviours of captive and wild ducks. Observational data on the state behaviours for 17 duck species were collected at three Wildfowl & Wetland Trust (WWT) centres in the UK from 2015 to 2018, with behavioural data on two species of wild duck also collected via direct observation. A meta-analysis of time spent on key state behaviours (papers published up until 2018) was performed to provide comparison with the information provided on time-activity budgets of the captive birds. Results showed a multitude of factors influenced captive duck behaviour, but resting, maintenance and locomotion behaviours were most commonly observed. Wild birds differed significantly in their time-activity budgets compared to captive individuals and data from the meta-analysis revealed that foraging rates were higher in the wild than in captivity. Records of abnormal behaviour in captive birds were non-existent to very low in performance, suggesting that flight restrained ducks do not fill part of their time budget with stereotypic behaviour. Human presence may potentially influence of the behaviour of both wild and captive ducks living in wetland areas that attract human visitors. Seasonal, temporal and sex differences significantly also affected wild and captive duck behaviour. Further study should continue to investigate behavioural responses of these species to a range of captive housing to determine the most optimal way of providing for good welfare under human care. Research that investigates the behaviour of fully winged captive ducks to extend our evaluation of behaviour patterns in flight restrained birds (and to provide further review against wild data) is recommended
Localized Basis for Effective Lattice Hamiltonians: Lattice Wannier Functions
A systematic method is presented for constructing effective Hamiltonians for
general phonon-related structural transitions. The key feature is the
application of group theoretical methods to identify the subspace in which the
effective Hamiltonian acts and construct for it localized basis vectors, which
are the analogue of electronic Wannier functions. The results of the symmetry
analysis for the perovskite, rocksalt, fluorite and A15 structures and the
forms of effective Hamiltonians for the ferroelectric transition in
and , the oxygen-octahedron rotation transition in , the
Jahn-Teller instability in and the
antiferroelectric transition in are discussed. For the oxygen-
octahedron rotation transition in , this method provides an
alternative to the rotational variable approach which is well behaved
throughout the Brillouin zone. The parameters appearing in the Wannier basis
vectors and in the effective Hamiltonian, given by the corresponding invariant
energy expansion, can be obtained for individual materials using first-
principles density-functional-theory total energy and linear response
techniques, or any technique that can reliably calculate force constants and
distortion energies. A practical approach to the determination of these
parameters is presented and the application to ferroelectric

Preexisting Neuropsychiatric Conditions and Associated Risk of Severe COVID-19 Infection and Other Acute Respiratory Infections
Importance Evidence indicates that preexisting neuropsychiatric conditions confer increased risks of severe outcomes from COVID-19 infection. It is unclear how this increased risk compares with risks associated with other severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs).Objective To determine whether preexisting diagnosis of and/or treatment for a neuropsychiatric condition is associated with severe outcomes from COVID-19 infection and other SARIs and whether any observed association is similar between the 2 outcomes.Design, Setting, and Participants Prepandemic (2015-2020) and contemporary (2020-2021) longitudinal cohorts were derived from the QResearch database of English primary care records. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 99% CIs were estimated in April 2022 using flexible parametric survival models clustered by primary care clinic. This study included a population-based sample, including all adults in the database who had been registered with a primary care clinic for at least 1 year. Analysis of routinely collected primary care electronic medical records was performed.Exposures Diagnosis of and/or medication for anxiety, mood, or psychotic disorders and diagnosis of dementia, depression, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder.Main Outcomes and Measures COVID-19ârelated mortality, or hospital or intensive care unit admission; SARI-related mortality, or hospital or intensive care unit admission.Results The prepandemic cohort comprised 11 134 789 adults (223 569 SARI cases [2.0%]) with a median (IQR) age of 42 (29-58) years, of which 5 644 525 (50.7%) were female. The contemporary cohort comprised 8 388 956 adults (58 203 severe COVID-19 cases [0.7%]) with a median (IQR) age of 48 (34-63) years, of which 4 207 192 were male (50.2%). Diagnosis and/or treatment for neuropsychiatric conditions other than dementia was associated with an increased likelihood of a severe outcome from SARI (anxiety diagnosis: HR, 1.16; 99% CI, 1.13-1.18; psychotic disorder diagnosis and treatment: HR, 2.56; 99% CI, 2.40-2.72) and COVID-19 (anxiety diagnosis: HR, 1.16; 99% CI, 1.12-1.20; psychotic disorder treatment: HR, 2.37; 99% CI, 2.20-2.55). The effect estimate for severe outcome with dementia was higher for those with COVID-19 than SARI (HR, 2.85; 99% CI, 2.71-3.00 vs HR, 2.13; 99% CI, 2.07-2.19).Conclusions and Relevance In this longitudinal cohort study, UK patients with preexisting neuropsychiatric conditions and treatments were associated with similarly increased risks of severe outcome from COVID-19 infection and SARIs, except for dementia
Emissions of nitrogen-containing organic compounds from the burning of herbaceous and arboraceous biomass: Fuel composition dependence and the variability of commonly used nitrile tracers
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from residential wood and crop residue burning were measured in Colorado, U.S. When compared to the emissions from crop burning, residential wood burning exhibited markedly lower concentrations of acetonitrile, a commonly used biomass burning tracer. For both herbaceous and arboraceous fuels, the emissions of nitrogen-containing VOCs (NVOCs) strongly depend on the fuel nitrogen content; therefore, low NVOC emissions from residential wood burning result from the combustion of low-nitrogen fuel. Consequently, the emissions of compounds hazardous to human health, such as HNCO and HCN, and the formation of secondary pollutants, such as ozone generated by NOx, are likely to depend on fuel nitrogen. These results also demonstrate that acetonitrile may not be a suitable tracer for domestic burning in urban areas. Wood burning emissions may be best identified through analysis of the emissions profile rather than reliance on a single tracer species

Nighttime chemical transformation in biomass burning plumes : A box model analysis initialized with aircraft observations
Biomass burning (BB) is a large source of reactive compounds in the atmosphere. While the daytime photochemistry of BB emissions has been studied in some detail, there has been little focus on nighttime reactions despite the potential for substantial oxidative and heterogeneous chemistry. Here, we present the first analysis of nighttime aircraft intercepts of agricultural BB plumes using observations from the NOAA WP-3D aircraft during the 2013 Southeast Nexus (SENEX) campaign. We use these observations in conjunction with detailed chemical box modeling to investigate the formation and fate of oxidants (NO3, N2O5, O3, and OH) and BB volatile organic compounds (BBVOCs), using emissions representative of agricultural burns (rice straw) and western wildfires (ponderosa pine). Field observations suggest NO3 production was approximately 1 ppbv hrâ1, while NO3 and N2O5 were at or below 3 pptv, indicating rapid NO3/N2O5 reactivity. Model analysis shows that >99% of NO3/N2O5 loss is due to BBVOC + NO3 reactions rather than aerosol uptake of N2O5. Nighttime BBVOC oxidation for rice straw and ponderosa pine fires is dominated by NO3 (72, 53%, respectively) but O3 oxidation is significant (25, 43%), leading to roughly 55% overnight depletion of the most reactive BBVOCs and NO2

The notion of organizational identity was introduced in management studies in 1985. In the following 25 years, a vibrant debate about how to conceptualize organizational identities and related themes (multiple identities, identity change, interrelations between identity, image and culture) does not seem to have corresponded to explicit reflections about specific methodological issues. In this paper, the authors inductively review research methods adopted by studies of organizational identity published in top-level journals, with the purpose of deriving insights about the current status of research practices, uncovering their often tacit ontological and epistemological assumptions, and stimulating discussion about their possible evolution
