    Numerical Simulations on Feasibility of Stochastic Model Predictive Control for Linear Discrete-Time Systems with Random Dither Quantization

    The random dither quantization method enables us to achieve much better performance than the simple uniform quantization method for the design of quantized control systems. Motivated by this fact, the stochastic model predictive control method in which a performance index is minimized subject to probabilistic constraints imposed on the state variables of systems has been proposed for linear feedback control systems with random dither quantization. In other words, a method for solving optimal control problems subject to probabilistic state constraints for linear discrete-time control systems with random dither quantization has been already established. To our best knowledge, however, the feasibility of such a kind of optimal control problems has not yet been studied. Our objective in this paper is to investigate the feasibility of stochastic model predictive control problems for linear discrete-time control systems with random dither quantization. To this end, we provide the results of numerical simulations that verify the feasibility of stochastic model predictive control problems for linear discrete-time control systems with random dither quantization

    Main group catalysis for H2 purification based on liquid organic hydrogen carriers

    Molecular hydrogen (H2) is one of the most important energy carriers. In the midterm future, a huge amount of H2 will be produced from a variety of hydrocarbon sources through conversion and removal of contaminants such as CO and CO2. However, bypassing these purification processes is desirable, given their energy consumption and environmental impact, which ultimately increases the cost of H2. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to separate H2 from a gaseous mixture of H2/CO/CO2/CH4 that can include an excess of CO and CO2 relative to H2 and simultaneously store it in N-heterocyclic compounds that act as liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), which can be applied to produce H2 by subsequent dehydrogenation. Our results demonstrate that LOHCs can potentially be used for H2 purification from CO- and CO2-rich crude H2 in addition to their well-established use in H2 storage.Hashimoto T., Asada T., Ogoshi S., et al.     X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein mediates neddylation by itself but does not function as a NEDD8–E3 ligase for caspase-7

    AbstractX-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) is a potent antagonist of caspases, and functions as a ubiquitin–E3 ligase by itself and for caspases. Recently, NEDD8, a ubiquitin-like modifier, has been suggested to be used for modification of caspase-7 mediated by XIAP. However, it is not clear whether caspase-7 is a bona fide target for NEDD8. Here we showed that no neddylation of caspase-7 but that of XIAP itself was observed under the conditions in which caspase-7 was modified with ubiquitin.     Factors associated with quality of bystander CPR: The presence of multiple rescuers and bystander-initiated CPR without instruction

    Aims: To identify the factors associated with good-quality bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCPR). Methods: Data were prospectively collected from 553 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs) managed with BCPR in the absence of emergency medical technicians (EMT) during 2012. The quality of BCPR was evaluated by EMTs at the scene and was assessed according to the standard recommendations for chest compressions, including proper hand positions, rates and depths. Results: Good-quality BCPR was more frequently confirmed in OHCAs that occurred in the central/urban region (56.3% [251/446] vs. 39.3% [42/107], p= 0.0015), had multiple rescuers (31.8% [142/446] vs. 11.2% [12/107], p< 0.0001) and received bystander-initiated BCPR (22.0% [98/446] vs. 5.6% [6/107], p< 0.0001). Good-quality BCPR was less frequently performed by family members (46.9% [209/446] vs. 67.3% [72/107], p= 0.0001), elderly bystanders (13.5% [60/446] vs. 28.0% [30/107], p= 0.0005) and in at-home OHCAs (51.1% [228/446] vs. 72.9% [78/107], p< 0.0001). BCPR duration was significantly longer in the good-quality group (median, 8 vs. 6. min, p= 0.0015). Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that multiple rescuers (odds ratio. = 2.8, 95% CI 1.5-5.6), bystander-initiated BCPR (2.7, 1.1-7.3), non-elderly bystanders (1.9, 1.1-3.2), occurrence in the central region (2.1, 1.3-3.3) and duration of BCPR (1.1, 1.0-1.1) were associated with good-quality BCPR. Moreover, good-quality BCPR was initiated earlier after recognition/witness of cardiac arrest compared with poor-quality BCPR (3 vs. 4. min, p= 0.0052). The rate of neurologically favourable survival at one year was 2.7 and 0% in the good-quality and poor-quality groups, respectively (p= 0.1357). Conclusions: The presence of multiple rescuers and bystander-initiated CPR are predominantly associated with good-quality BCPR. © 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd

    Potential association of bystander-patient relationship with bystander response and patient survival in daytime out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

    Aim: To investigate whether the bystander-patient relationship affects bystander response to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and patient outcomes depending on the time of day. Methods: This population-based observational study in Japan involving 139,265 bystander-witnessed OHCAs (90,426 family members, 10,479 friends/colleagues, and 38,360 others) without prehospital physician involvement was conducted from 2005 to 2009. Factors associated with better bystander response [early emergency call and bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCPR)] and 1-month neurologically favourable survival were assessed. Results: The rates of dispatcher-assisted CPR during daytime (7:00-18:59) and nighttime (19:00-6:59) were highest in family members (45.6% and 46.1%, respectively, for family members; 28.7% and 29.2%, respectively, for friends/colleagues; and 28.1% and 25.3%, respectively, for others). However, the BCPR rates were lowest in family members (35.5% and 37.8%, respectively, for family members; 43.7% and 37.8%, respectively, for friends/colleagues; and 59.3% and 50.0%, respectively, for others). Large delays (≄5. min) in placing emergency calls and initiating BCPR were most frequent in family members. The overall survival rate was lowest (2.7%) for family members and highest (9.1%) for friends/colleagues during daytime. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the effect of bystander relationship on survival was significant only during daytime [adjusted odds ratios (95% CI) for survival from daytime OHCAs with family as reference were 1.51 (1.36-1.68) for friends/colleagues and 1.23 (1.13-1.34) for others]. Conclusions: Family members are least likely to perform BCPR and OHCAs witnessed by family members are least likely to survive during daytime. Different strategies are required for family-witnessed OHCAs

    Renal Function after Nephrectomy Influences the Risk of Cardiovascular Events

    We retrospectively analyzed the factors related to postoperative cardiovascular (CV) events in patients undergoing partial nephrectomy (PN) or radical nephrectomy (RN) for clinical T1 renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We identified 570 patients who underwent PN or RN for T1 renal cell carcinoma between January 1998 and December 2009 at our institution and related hospitals. We determined the cumulative incidence rate of CV events and overall survival (OS) using Kaplan-Meier survival curves with a log-rank test, and we evaluated the risk for an increase in CV events and OS using Cox proportional hazard regression. Of the 570 patients, 171 underwent PN and 399 underwent RN. The type of surgery was not significantly related with CV events. The only factor that significantly increased the risk of CV events in both the univariate (HR 2.67, p=0.006) and multivariate analyses (HR 2.14, p=0.044) was a postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <45 ml/min/1.73 m2. Postoperative eGFR was also a significant risk factor for OS in the univariate analysis (HR 2.38, p=0.0104), but not in the multivariate model. Postoperative renal function was a significant independent predictor of the incidence of subsequent CV events

    Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs). XII. Extended [C ii] Structure (Merger or Outflow) in a z = 6.72 Red Quasar

    We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array [C II] 158 ÎŒm line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations toward HSC J120505.09−000027.9 (J1205−0000) at z = 6.72 with a beam size of ∌0 8 × 0 5 (or 4.1 kpc × 2.6 kpc), the most distant red quasar known to date. Red quasars are modestly reddened by dust and are thought to be in rapid transition from an obscured starburst to an unobscured normal quasar, driven by powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback that blows out a cocoon of interstellar medium. The FIR continuum of J1205−0000 is bright, with an estimated luminosity of LFIR ∌ 3 × 1012 Le. The [C II] line emission is extended on scales of r ∌ 5 kpc, greater than that of the FIR continuum. The line profiles at the extended regions are complex and broad (FWHM ∌ 630–780 km s−1 ). Although it is not practical to identify the nature of this extended structure, possible explanations include (i) companion/merging galaxies and (ii) massive AGN-driven outflows. For the case of (i), the companions are modestly star-forming (∌10 Me yr−1 ) but are not detected by our Subaru optical observations (yAB,5σ = 24.4 mag). For the case of (ii), our lower limit to the cold neutral outflow rate is ∌100 Me yr−1 . The outflow kinetic energy and momentum are both much lower than predicted in energyconserving wind models, suggesting that the AGN feedback in this quasar is not capable of completely suppressing its star formatio

    Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs). XIII. Large-scale Feedback and Star Formation in a Low-luminosity Quasar at z = 7.07 on the Local Black Hole to Host Mass Relation

    We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array [C II] 158 ÎŒm line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations (0 70 × 0 56 resolution) toward HSC J124353.93+010038.5 (J1243+0100) at z = 7.07, the only low-luminosity (M1450 > −25 mag) quasar currently known at z > 7. The FIR continuum is bright (1.52 mJy) and resolved with a total luminosity of LFIR = 3.5 × 1012 Le. The spatially extended component is responsible for ∌40% of the emission. The area-integrated [C II] spectrum shows a broad wing (FWHM = 997 km s−1 , L[C II] = 1.2 × 109 Le), as well as a bright core (FWHM = 235 km s−1 , L[C II] = 1.9 × 109 Le). This wing is the first detection of a galactic-scale quasar-driven outflow (atomic outflow rate >447 Me yr−1 ) at z > 7. The estimated large mass-loading factor of the total outflow (e.g., 9 relative to the [C II]-based star formation rate) suggests that this outflow will soon quench the star formation of the host. The core gas dynamics are governed by rotation, with a rotation curve suggestive of a compact bulge (∌3.3 × 1010 Me), although it is not yet spatially resolved. Finally, we found that J1243+0100 has a black hole mass–to–dynamical mass (and –to–bulge mass) ratio of ∌0.4% (∌1%), consistent with the local value within the uncertainties. Our results therefore suggest that the black hole–host coevolution relation is already in place at z ∌ 7 for this object
