Syntheses, Structures, and Photophysical Properties of Mono- and Dinuclear Sulfur-Rich Gold(I) Complexes
Sulfur-rich 1,2 dithiolene and neutral thione ligands were used for the synthesis of gold complexes, some of them exhibiting aurophilic interactions. Surprisingly, the closest Au···Au contact is observed in an unsupported dinuclear complex, which makes part of a supramolecular network. Photophysical studies, combined with DFT calculations, indicate that the participations of the Au···Au interactions have some relevance to the rich luminescence properties of these compounds
Reproducibility of optical coherence tomography airway imaging
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a promising imaging technique to evaluate small airway remodeling. However, the short-term insertion-reinsertion reproducibility of OCT for evaluating the same bronchial pathway has yet to be established. We evaluated 74 OCT data sets from 38 current or former smokers twice within a single imaging session. Although the overall insertion-reinsertion airway wall thickness (WT) measurement coefficient of variation (CV) was moderate at 12%, much of the variability between repeat imaging was attributed to the observer; CV for repeated measurements of the same airway (intra-observer CV) was 9%. Therefore, reproducibility may be improved by introduction of automated analysis approaches suggesting that OCT has potential to be an in-vivo method for evaluating airway remodeling in future longitudinal and intervention studies. Congenital bipartite lunate presenting as a misdiagnosed lunate fracture: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>A rare case of congenital bipartite lunate in a child is reported. Carpal variants are very uncommon as independent entities, with only three previous reports of this condition in the English literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>An 11-year-old Caucasian boy presented with pain in the left wrist after a fall. Radiographs in the emergency department demonstrated a lunate that was divided into palmar and dorsal parts, causing a misdiagnosis of fractured lunate. Magnetic resonance imaging was then used to differentiate between the two diagnoses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Very few cases of bipartite lunate have been reported in the literature, and unless awareness is raised about congenital anomalies such as this variant, confusion may arise.</p
An extension of the SHARC survey
We report on our search for distant clusters of galaxies based on optical and
X-ray follow up observations of X-ray candidates from the SHARC survey. Based
on the assumption that the absence of bright optical or radio counterparts to
possibly extended X-ray sources could be distant clusters. We have obtained
deep optical images and redshifts for several of these objects and analyzed
archive XMM-Newton or Chandra data where applicable. In our list of candidate
clusters, two are probably galaxy structures at redshifts of z0.51 and
0.28. Seven other structures are possibly galaxy clusters between z0.3
and 1. Three sources are identified with QSOs and are thus likely to be X-ray
point sources, and six more also probably fall in this category. One X-ray
source is spurious or variable. For 17 other sources, the data are too sparse
at this time to put forward any hypothesis on their nature. We also
serendipitously detected a cluster at z=0.53 and another galaxy concentration
which is probably a structure with a redshift in the [0.15-0.6] range. We
discuss these results within the context of future space missions to
demonstrate the necessity of a wide field of view telescope optimized for the
0.5-2 keV range.Comment: Accepted in A&
Continued availability and sale of pangolins in a major urban bushmeat market in Cameroon despite national bans and the COVID-19 outbreak
First paragraph: Bushmeat (or ‘wild meat’, defined as the meat of wild animals) is a major source of protein for rural people across sub-Saharan Africa (Ingram et al., 2021), yet some species suffer unsustainable levels of exploitation often to meet the demands of increasing urban populations (Coad et al., 2019; Wilkie et al., 2016). As in the rest of Central Africa, Cameroon has a long history of bushmeat consumption and trade (Bahuchet & Ioveva, 1999; Randolph, 2016). Pangolins (Family: Manidae) have been one of the many groups of species exploited as they are highly valued for food and, in some countries, used as traditional remedies (Soewu et al., 2020). Pangolin meat is favoured for its taste and it remains commonly offered for sale in Cameroonian markets and restaurants (Ingram et al., 2018; Nguyen et al., 2021). Furthermore, Cameroon has become one of the major export countries for the illegal trade in pangolin scales from Africa to Asia (Ingram et al., 2019a), to supply the market for Asian traditional medicines, for example in traditional Chinese medicine (Wang et al., 2020). All African pangolin species are now considered to have declining population trends (Ingram et al., 2019b; Nixon et al., 2019; Pietersen et al., 2019a, 2019b)
Azimuthal Angle Correlations for Rapidity Separated Hadron Pairs in d+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
We report on two-particle azimuthal angle correlations between charged
hadrons at forward/backward (deuteron/gold going direction) rapidity and
charged hadrons at mid-rapidity in deuteron-gold (d+Au) and proton-proton (p+p)
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Jet structures are observed in the
correlations which we quantify in terms of the conditional yield and angular
width of away side partners. The kinematic region studied here samples partons
in the gold nucleus carrying nucleon momentum fraction x~0.1 to x~0.01. Within
this range, we find no x dependence of the jet structure in d+Au collisions.Comment: 330 authors, 6 pages text, 4 figures, no tables. Submitted to Phys.

M(atrix) Theory: Matrix Quantum Mechanics as a Fundamental Theory
A self-contained review is given of the matrix model of M-theory. The
introductory part of the review is intended to be accessible to the general
reader. M-theory is an eleven-dimensional quantum theory of gravity which is
believed to underlie all superstring theories. This is the only candidate at
present for a theory of fundamental physics which reconciles gravity and
quantum field theory in a potentially realistic fashion. Evidence for the
existence of M-theory is still only circumstantial---no complete
background-independent formulation of the theory yet exists. Matrix theory was
first developed as a regularized theory of a supersymmetric quantum membrane.
More recently, the theory appeared in a different guise as the discrete
light-cone quantization of M-theory in flat space. These two approaches to
matrix theory are described in detail and compared. It is shown that matrix
theory is a well-defined quantum theory which reduces to a supersymmetric
theory of gravity at low energies. Although the fundamental degrees of freedom
of matrix theory are essentially pointlike, it is shown that higher-dimensional
fluctuating objects (branes) arise through the nonabelian structure of the
matrix degrees of freedom. The problem of formulating matrix theory in a
general space-time background is discussed, and the connections between matrix

Some geometric invariants from resolutions of Hilbert modules
The model theory of Sz.-Nagy and Foias for contractions was reformulated in [15, chapter 3]. The existence of a unique minimal unitary dilation amounts to the exis-tence of a Silov resolution for contractive Hilbert modulesM over the disc algebra A(D) along with the fact that any two minimal Silov resolutions are isomorphic
System Size and Energy Dependence of Jet-Induced Hadron Pair Correlation Shapes in Cu+Cu and Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 and 62.4 GeV
We present azimuthal angle correlations of intermediate transverse momentum
(1-4 GeV/c) hadrons from {dijets} in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) =
62.4 and 200 GeV. The away-side dijet induced azimuthal correlation is
broadened, non-Gaussian, and peaked away from \Delta\phi=\pi in central and
semi-central collisions in all the systems. The broadening and peak location
are found to depend upon the number of participants in the collision, but not
on the collision energy or beam nuclei. These results are consistent with sound
or shock wave models, but pose challenges to Cherenkov gluon radiation models.Comment: 464 authors from 60 institutions, 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.
