    Intensive monitoring of the strongly variable BL Lac S5 0716+714

    The BL Lac object S5 0716+714 was monitored during a multifrequency campaign in 1996. Preliminary analysis of the optical, ROSAT and RXTE data are presented. Strong variability on short time scales was observed.     Knowledge, attitudes, and practice of oncologists and oncology health care providers in promoting physical activity to cancer survivors: An international survey

    Objective: To investigate knowledge, attitudes and practices of oncologists towards physical 2 activity (PA) in cancer survivors, and the association between oncologists’ own PA behavior 3 and PA promotion. Methods: Oncologists (n=123) completed a survey based on the Theory of 4 Planned Behavior (TPB). Participants reported PA promotion behavior, PA involvement, 5 attitudes, intentions, social norm, Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC), confidence and 6 knowledge of exercise prescription. Structural equation modelling (SEM) evaluated these 7 associations. Results: Less than half of oncologists reported regularly promoting PA to 8 patients (46%), with 20% providing written information and 23% referrals. Only 26% were 9 physically active. TPB SEM pathways explained 54.6% of the variance in PA promotion 10 (CFI=0.905, SRMR=0.040). Social norm was the only significant pathway to intention, but 11 also a significant indirect pathway to PA promotion (p=.007). Confidence to promote PA, 12 PBC and intentions were direct significant pathways to PA promotion (p\u3c.05). Exploratory 13 SEM pathways explained 19.6% of the variance of PA behavior, which in turn explained 14 13.1% Social Norm, 10.7% Attitude, 10.0% Confidence to Recommend and 17.8% PA 15 promotion behavior (CFI=0.921, SRMR=0.076). Instrumental-attitude was a direct significant 16 pathway to PA behavior (p=.001). PA behavior was a direct significant pathway to social 17 norms, attitude, confidence to recommend, and PA promotion (p \u3c 0.05). Conclusions: 18 Oncologists reported a modest ability to promote PA, low PA promotion rates and limited 19 knowledge of exercise prescription. Patient physical activity promotion may be improved 20 through strategies that increase oncologists’ PBC, confidence and their own personal PA 21 participation

    Exercise, Service and Support: Client Experiences of Physical Activity Referral Schemes(PARS)

    Physical activity referral schemes (PARS) represent one of the most prevalent interventions in the fight against chronic illness such as coronary heart disease and obesity. Despite this, issues surrounding low retention and adherence continue to hinder the potential effectiveness of such schemes on public health. This article reports on the second stage of a larger investigation into client experiences of PARS focusing specifically on findings from five client-based focus groups and interviews with five Scheme Organisers. The resulting analysis reveals three main factors impacting participant perceptions of the quality of service and support received: the organisation of PARS provision, client engagement with the PARS community and the nature and extent of client support networks. The article demonstrates that staff have a considerable role to play in engaging clients in the PARS system and that Scheme Organisers should give serious thought to ensuring that clients have valuable and sustainable networks of support. Furthermore, it is suggested that Scheme Organisers need to facilitate a system in which staff are genuinely engaged with the needs of clients and are able to provide individualised programmes of physical activity

    Sub-arcsecond imaging with the International LOFAR Telescope I. Foundational calibration strategy and pipeline

    The International LOFAR Telescope is an interferometer with stations spread across Europe. With baselines of up to ~2000 km, LOFAR has the unique capability of achieving sub-arcsecond resolution at frequencies below 200 MHz. However, it is technically and logistically challenging to process LOFAR data at this resolution. To date only a handful of publications have exploited this capability. Here we present a calibration strategy that builds on previous high-resolution work with LOFAR. It is implemented in a pipeline using mostly dedicated LOFAR software tools and the same processing framework as the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). We give an overview of the calibration strategy and discuss the special challenges inherent to enacting high-resolution imaging with LOFAR, and describe the pipeline, which is publicly available, in detail. We demonstrate the calibration strategy by using the pipeline on P205+55, a typical LoTSS pointing with an 8 h observation and 13 international stations. We perform in-field delay calibration, solution referencing to other calibrators in the field, self-calibration of these calibrators, and imaging of example directions of interest in the field. We find that for this specific field and these ionospheric conditions, dispersive delay solutions can be transferred between calibrators up to ~1.5° away, while phase solution transferral works well over ~1°. We also demonstrate a check of the astrometry and flux density scale with the in-field delay calibrator source. Imaging in 17 directions, we find the restoring beam is typically ~0.3â€Čâ€Č ×0.2â€Čâ€Č although this varies slightly over the entire 5 deg2 field of view. We find we can achieve ~80–300 ÎŒJy bm−1 image rms noise, which is dependent on the distance from the phase centre; typical values are ~90 ÎŒJy bm−1 for the 8 h observation with 48 MHz of bandwidth. Seventy percent of processed sources are detected, and from this we estimate that we should be able to image roughly 900 sources per LoTSS pointing. This equates to ~ 3 million sources in the northern sky, which LoTSS will entirely cover in the next several years. Future optimisation of the calibration strategy for efficient post-processing of LoTSS at high resolution makes this estimate a lower limit

    Length of Barrett's oesophagus: an important factor in the development of dysplasia and adenocarcinoma.

    In a 15 year prospective study of endoscopic surveillance of columnar lined oesophagus, 102 patients with a mean follow up of 54 (12.5) months and total follow up of 462 years have been evaluated. Of all the sets of biopsies taken, 59 in 21 patients were found to exhibit dysplasia or carcinoma. Four male patients had carcinoma of the oesophagus, indicating a 30 times increased risk of development of adenocarcinoma in columnar lined oesophagus. The length of columnar lined oesophagus in subjects with dysplasia was significantly longer as compared with the whole group (p = 0.01) and when compared with the patients without dysplasia (p = 0.005). None of the patients with dysplasia had a columnar lined oesophagus of less than 8 cm. Length of columnar lined oesophagus therefore seems to be a significant risk factor in the development of dysplasia and subsequent carcinoma and intensive follow up of patients with columnar lined oesophagus greater than 8 cm in length is recommended
